There could be several reasons the substrate pulled away from the sides, like underhydrated subtrate, high temperature, high evaporation, low subtrate ratio and slow colonization comes too mind.

Surface pinset is mostly about genetics and surface conditions in my experience. Oh and even though I don't use liners, if done right a liner will shrink with the substrate so it can prevent sidepins.

That's exactly what I was thinking about the liners. It didn't seem like there was any way it would contract this much. I did seem to have a LOT of evaporation in all of my tubs, even though the CVG that came with the boomr bin seemed quite dry. Temps are always stable at about 72-73*. I'm actually getting a really bad feeling that I'm not gonna get that good of a flush off this big boomr bin.

I cannot decide if I should run the mycomister to push the humidity back up to 90-95, then let it fall back to 87 or so (where it is now), because I'm not sure if it's the ACTION of evaporation that triggers pins, or the ACTUAL moisture level. So I'M TOTALLY CONFUSED as to whether I should be misting/using mycomister. PLEASE let me know what you think about this. If it would help generate more pins by adding more moisture TO EVAPORATE then I'd do it but I'm not too sure that's how it works.

Most of the time leaving any control to vendors is going to leave you puzzled on where thing went wrong and how to adjust it. If the CVG was on the dry side that could be a factor. Get coir and verm and hydrate it yourself :awesomenod:

Since your tub is colonized most of the surface will be pretty hydrophobic and running the mister might just make the mycelium matted and result in being even more hydrophobic. If possible run the mister just enough for tiny beads on the surface in hopes of making it more appealing for pins to form, no promises from me though

Do everything yourself and you will gain full control over the process and know how to adjust in the future

Yeah, I know...I shouldn't have ordered the bin that came with CVG. I was just trying to limit the number of variables on the first run. I almost skipped it altogether but didn't want to waste 10lbs of CVG. The surface is actually looking pretty dry on the big tub so I'm gonna mist it very briefly here and there in the hopes of promoting a little more pinning. Thanks so much for your help again. You truly are the man! You've helped me so, SO much.

I'm a little surprised the pins in the two small tubs haven't done much in the past 24 hours. I'm thinking maybe I should start fanning them regularly.

Meh, unless you get fuzzy feet walking up the stipe you should be fine, but hey I'm not there and experience is where you learn best :awesomenod:

More pics from today...please tell me what you think about the surface moisture especially on the smaller tubs...I've been fanning occasionally, mostly just removing lid to wipe excess moisture to give the evaporating water somewhere to go without it beading up and falling back in. I've finally got about 14 pins I counted on the big tub, but I expected way bigger clusters of pins like in the smaller tubs. Not sure why they are so spread out. There are only a couple pins around the one big mushroom, and a few spaced out clusters here and there with about 5 pins each. If none of them abort I'd be happy, but that's probably not a reality. I have a feeling this tub is gonna be a disappointment, but oh well, I learned a ton. I'm just hoping I can get at least 1.5-2 ounces dry out of all 3. The pins are everywnere in the small tubs but not really growing fast...the pins are not nearly as numbered in the big tub but they're growing much faster. Not too sure why, though they are different strains.

I have a bunch of really fat side pins that have grown into little mushrooms, and between that and a couple mushrooms out of the boomr bin I'd have enough for a little pre-harvest test trip. I know I should probably just wait it out, but I've been dying to trip for the last few years and I've especially been wanting to since starting this grow! I've probably got about 5-10 grams wet of side pins. I want a heroic dose though so I'm thinking I'll wait until I have at least 20 grams or so of wet mushrooms.

So I've been fanning these tubs trying to get these tiny droplets to evaporate but they actually have gotten worse on one tub. I pulled them underneath my window and cracked the blinds to let some sunlight on them to gently warm them a tiny bit and promote some evaporation. There are pins it looks like, but they're really small and growing very slow. I'm worried I'm gonna end up with a lot of aborts. Is it really too dangerous to leave the lids off for 10-15 minutes since I've been fanning them anyway?
