Finally got pins and one mushroom *PICS* - Is casing too thick?
    #29639847 -

I have two 13q tubs alongside a boomr bin - the boomr bin I cased a few days ago and it is quickly taking over the casing layer with thicker mycelium than I had on the surface originally, so that's good.

The two small tubs have been doing really well. They're covered in an ultra thick, fluffy coating of mycelium. But they've been coated for two or three days not, and no pins are forming. My curiousity finally got the best of me, and while the AC wasn't running, I cracked the tub a tiny bit and peeked in. Again, it looks super healthy, with little almost microscopic dots of water coating the surface. Am I just being impatient? Will the pins form eventually? I'm concerned that I don't have enough air exchange - i put one large disc filter (about 4" in diameter) on one lid and two on the other just as a sort of experiment. They both look almost identical despite the different air hole setup. I'm just completely unsure if I should be considering Fork Tek yet? I really, REALLY don't want to have to use Fork Tek, but will I have to obviously.

Yes, you are being impatient, just LITFA and I'm sure you'll get pins withing a week. And dude, you don't need to create a new thread for every question that comes to mind. One of the most active threads is the quick questions quick answers thread and this kind of question is perfect for said thread and you'll get a lot more eyes on your question as well

Hey man, I don't care about the clutter of new threads or whatever, I'm just saying that the qq thread is great for quick questions and that it will have more eyes looking, which means more information for you, it's all good, just trying to help

Hooray! I've finally got little pins going in my little tubs, and my big tub popped up a longer mushroom yesterday. I actually noticed I have about a 4x4 inch wet spot that needs to dry up so I've stopped running the mycomister.

I cased this tub about 3 days ago with a thin casing layer that I thought I did a good job spreading out and I tried to make it a quarter inch or less. I just wanted to get a little more moisture to the slightly dry top layer. It worked really well, I ended up with much thicker, healthier mycelium, but there are areas where it looks like its just a little bit too thick and I worry about whether the mycelium will push through all of it, although I'm not too worried because that one lonely mushroom popped right through a fairly thick layer of coir, it had some on top of it until it got a little bigger and it fell off.

Sorry, it's hard to get decent pics as the walls are pretty much coated in water droplets.

Should I risk opening this in a SAB to spread the casing in the thicker areas around and thin it out? I'm thinking no, just let it do its thing. I'm done running the mycomister unless the humidity goes below 80.

Well, I just took a bit of a calculated risk. After running the mycomister off and on to keep the humidity up over the last couple days, so much water slowly accumulated on the lid that it was falling off in huge beads and soaking the mycelium and casing layer. I ended up sterilizing a long wooden spoon, wrapped some paper towels around it, removed a large FAE filter and swabbed as much of the lid as I could reach and ended up soaking up a ton of water. Risky?Yes...a bit... but the alternative really wasn't good. I hope this fixes my pinning problem in the large, cased tub and some more mushroom join the loner that popped up about 48 hours ago.

The two small tubs are spinning into these tall hyphal knots and forming little pins. Really praying all three give me a decent flush.

At this point of colonisation you don't have to be that preoccupied. Everything looks colonised and mycelium can protect itself right now. Of course it's better not to touch mycelium with bare hands, but you can take the lid off to make a good photo for example.

Alright, I think I actually need to let my smaller tubs breathe anyway. One tub has a lot more pins formed than the other and seems to be evaporating a little better. The other has really tiny dots of moisture all over the mycelium but it's been that way for a few days and doesn't seem to be evaporating.

I'm actually really glad I opened that bin the other night to swab the excess water off the top of the lid, it was basically raining huge droplets across the entire surface. I'm praying I finally get some more small mushrooms over the next few days with better evaporation. Here's some more pics although I didn't crack the lids, I'll crack the lids and take some high quality pics later with my Canon 7D.

Could someone please tell me if the above pics of the tub with the casing layer has too thick a casing layer? I only applied 1/4 inch or less but it is a bit thicker in some areas despite trying really hard to sort of grind it in between my fingers and evenly sprinkle it over the surface. I'm debating since it's fully colonized cracking the tub again and with gloves and maybe some kind of large tweezers or something gently remove some of the excess coir. Although the mushroom in the pic popped right through the coir and still has a couple little bits of coir sitting on the head. I've got rteally high hopes for this tub but I'm starting to get a little anxious. I'm praying after getting all the giant beads of water off the lid, that a day of good evaporation helps get this thing fully fruiting. I can't believe I have one small mushroom and it popped up 2 days ago. How common is it for one mushroom to pop up ahead of the others like this before any pinning?

Please remove the lid and get better pics. You are far past the stage where taking the lid off will cause contam.

Agreed, once those jars are fully colonized and you open them its not that big of a deal.

Here are the topless photos, per request  I do have side pins like a mofo. Even some full on small mushrooms already. I definitely need to up the FAE to get these surfaces pinning better on the small tubs.

AAAAND the side pins GALORE (I know I'm an idiot and should have used a liner. First time grower...didn't think it mattered all that much and clearly I was wrong!)

I thinned out the thick spots on the casing layer...everything I left was really thin and had mycelium right under it so I just decided to leave it alone. That one lonely shroom popped right through the casing layer. Thankfully I have a few decent sized pins, but I still don't have a lot, which is worrysome.

The smaller tubs that I didn't case I'm wondering if I should....but I think with enough FAE the small pins that are starting will be adequate.

I never use a liner for any species or a proper casing for cubes, I do a top layer of coir when I spawn to substrate and compress it like it owes me money with a trowel.

You can see the shift in mycelium growth where the top layer starts.

God what a sick flush. You really are the man bro. I've got a sort of weird question - I have this ultra thick mycelium that took a long time to pin, while I keep seeing pictures of beautiful flushes without the huge thick layer of surface mycelium I see on my current tubs. I take it this is because my FAE/evaporation was inadequate and I took too long to introduce proper fruiting conditions.

What I don't understand is how to prevent side pins because I thought I packed the edges tight enough, but it seems the whole cake contracted slightly and gave it plenty of room to grow even little mushrooms. I'm amazed I have little mushroom side pins but no large pins on top. It's frustrating, but I think after fanning them a bit today and keeping the lids dry as it evaporates to give the water a place to cling  will improve things...if anyone has any other advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm super anxious about this grow, I put a ton of effort into it and I'm really praying for a decent reward! Although even if it failed completely I'll never stop pursuing this.

You don't think the smaller tubs look too wet? I'm worried that I've got all these side pins and no significant top pins...but I'm praying that in the next couple days that changes with more FAE.

There could be several reasons the substrate pulled away from the sides, like underhydrated subtrate, high temperature, high evaporation, low subtrate ratio and slow colonization comes too mind.

Surface pinset is mostly about genetics and surface conditions in my experience. Oh and even though I don't use liners, if done right a liner will shrink with the substrate so it can prevent sidepins.
