I want to build a box like the original poster, or so, and I am trying to figure out if the bottom of the planters are open to soil or sealed off, or have cardboard under them.

Doesn't appear there's nothing but soil, I'm sure stipe can fill us in if he read this.

I personally would probably lay down some weed supressing fabric in the bottom.

The OP is spawned to coir with a soil casing sown with grass seed. The bottom of the box can be left open, lined with cardboard, or screened to prevent rodents, it's up to you. I mixed my spawn into the hydrated coir and just laid it out over the garden dirt it was sitting on, but if you have issues with with animals you can lay chicken wire or something down, cardboard wouldn't hurt.

Ochras with a Beef Dong, aka sporeless GT, in the back.  He probably would've been a TDM.  I just make regular shoeboxes, colonize inside for a week,  remove from tub and set them in my garden.  Covered with a light layer of straw they do fine with afternoon sun.

How deadly are fungus gnats to mycelium outdoors? I found some in my compost I was using for my outdoor patch. Is it a matter of how many there are? Should I neem soak it or something?

Mycelium outdoors is always going to have some unwelcome visitors but ime it doesn't get out of hand as quickly as indoors in a closed tub. If you are really worried, you could dissolve some BTI, mix it in a watering can and cover your whole patch with it. But I've personally never bothered to do so outdoors.

Yeah squirrels, slugs, and hippy deer that just want to trip off your hard work are much bigger problems.

I noticed there was a team of 3-4 dragonflies patrolling one of the plant pots I was using. Some natural pest control already in effect.

Ok all! Honest to God I have read as much as I can on the outdoor growing and I need help pulling the trigger on a solution for bringing my spent sub and dirty grains outside.

I am thinking about buying some 5gal hardware store buckets and converting them into pots. Thinking I will cut the middle out of the lids and secure chicken wire or window screen to the middle so I can put the lid on and have a screened top for light and water but to keep rodents at bay.

What should I put in the buckets as sub? Can I use garden soil? Hydrated coir? Dirt from my yard?

Is it necessary to have grass or straw on the surface?

Do you break up the substrate and bury or bury them whole?

Please help!! I want to join in the outdoor fun and get the most out of my colonized grains.

TIA!

Lots use coir or peat moss of if it's woodlovers just woodchips or mulch.

Some use outdoor soil though I have no success with that.

Some people use compost

I would break up the substrate personally, and honestly any sort of substrate material yoy have on hand (coir, straw, compost, etc) I would just throw it all together like a potpourri

this was a free 4th flush from a couple of tubs I put outside. I dug a shallow β€œgrave” put the cakes in it and covered it with an inch of soil. No need to break it up. Grain spawn, I’d mix with coir just like I do inside.

Ok wellll, here goes nothing.

Got a couple of big Rubbermaids. Bought two bags of upcycled mushroom substrate and a bag of black how. Used a hot nail to poke holes in the tubs for drainage. Combined the substrate and poo in one tote, dug about a 4" hole and broke up some bacterial rye jars of Palenque cubes.

Hoping that the critters don't dig the shit out of it and that it actually works. Would love a solution for utilizing less-than-ideal substrate from my indoor grows.

Anything I should switch up or adjust?

Press the button with two green mountains that has the yellow sun above the background mountain; its the button to the left of the button with a blue circle with a white triangle in it.
