Google AI Consistently being inconsistent with water to grain ratios - HELP PLEASE!
    #29633723 -

Hi everyone, I recently began my first mushroom grow. I have a few tubs that are about to fruit but I went to make my own grain spawn this time and I ended up messing up about 3 1 quart jars by not using enough water. I used google ai for the water ratio for a 2:1 mix of groats to millet and I can't remember exactly what I used for those, but they came out dry...so I tried again with 4 quart jars filled with 350g millet to 190ml of water, the amount google recommended which seemed about right from another video I had seen (i realized I overfilled the jars at the end and dumped about 50g or a little more out of each jar into another jar im going to try to resterilize. I know removing the lids was risky but I didn't have much choice, I did it in a still air box very quickly while they were still piping hot so I think I'll be ok. Anyway, while I had the lids off, I dumped a little grain in my hand and felt it and it was sticky but barely even moist. I realized they werent even close to hydrated enough. I was also paranoid about having removed the lids to dump some out so I added 50ml of water to each jar (after removing a little millet to give more space to shake) and put them back in the pressure cooker for 60 min. They came out not mushy at all, looking much more properly hydrated. But I'm still not 100% i shuoldn't be using more water. What ratio of water should I be using both for popcorn in bags and jars, and groats and millet, at a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio, also in grain spawn bags with injection ports or jars. I have looked everywhere and theres a lot of varying info. And google ai has done nothing but screw me up. I also tried doing two 2.85lb bags of popcorn with 600ml water (google got me again) and they seemed way too hard and dry so I added about 30ml of water to each bag and steamed them again and they came out almost perfectly hydrated. Not too mushy. So I'm guessing I shuold be doing closer to 700-800ml water for 2.85lb bags of popcorn. After I called google ai out, it literally changed its answer to 840 ml. Fucking google. I'm just still VERY unsure of what to do for the millet and groats to get perfectly hydrated grain 1qt spawn jars with no soak, no simmer. I'm sure this has been covered on millet or oats alone, but I'm not sure about the combo and I've seen quite varying resposes across youtube.

Thanks in advance. I seriously appreciate any help.

Actually I searched and if this has been covered I can't find at. At least with combos of groats/millet. I'm using those and popcorn just as a sort of experiment to see which is easier to work with/has the best results. Basically to shorten the top post, I really need perfect ratios for water to 1:1 groats and millet or 2:1 groats and millet, preferable with weight in grams to ml of water.

If the info isn't available I think you should create it. That way you won't be bothered weighing volumes of water.

AI has never grown mushrooms. Of course it will guess.

Personally I think the grains should be washed, boiled, and prepped before sterilizing them. More control.

AI has confident false answers. It's good for small linguistic tasks and logic problems, especially math and code. But it is not good at growing organic life forms.

If you are doing forced hydration I would highly recommend checking out this thread. You need to hot shake the jars to distribute the hydration... You will probably also need to adjust the ratios based on your environment and grains.

This thread is a great starting point.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28052502/vc/1

The corn you need to fully prep. Forced hydration in a jar with corn never worked for me. Treefrog has some notes on how she is prepping popcorn you can ignore the fertilizer steps if you are not attempting to grow pans.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28971120

With the amount of time and resources you have spent already why not consider fully prepping your grain? It will give much more consistent results.

One more note. If you are adding hot jars to a still air box you are creating air currents from the temperature difference. Don't work with the jars until they are cool if you are attempting aseptic work.

If you're using AI to grow mushrooms you're already fucking up. Why have some piece of shit come read things that already exist and then fuck them all up while trying to regurgitate it to you. In what world does using AI to ask for help with grain prep make sense. Holy fuck.

I think this is a sad commentary on the state of society. Here we have arguably the best minds on the subject of psilocybe cultivation, and people are so afraid of human interaction that they avoid the experts who are happy and on hand to help. Instead they go to some crappy ai and trust that over humans with real experience and a desire to see others succeed. It is confusing. If humans had AI in the stone age we would have never reached the bronze.

AI is excellent if you're wondering at what rate certain molds grow at certain temps, it will give you a scienifically accurate answer every time, because it doesnt need to search a drug forum to find the answer to those question, it can go to actual experts in the field and to research centers to find the best info.

But if you ask AI what the best fruiting chamber for BRF cakes is it will tell you its a SGFC and that you should fan and mist 10 times a day

You just need to know what to use AI for and what to use shroomery for :bongload:

What an amazing forum! I cannot believe I got this many friendly and helpful replies. I expected to get screamed at for not finding the answer myself. But I had THREE grain cooks basically go bad. Two with millet: both were way too dry using google AI's instructions, which seemed sort of close to a video or two I had seen but I didn't do the math to compare which I should have.

I am aware of the need to hot shake the jars before they cool off and I always do that extensively. I finally got a really good turnout with millet and groats yesterday. I  used a 1:1 ratio just because that's what I have but I usually do 2:1. Although I'm still experimenting with popcorn and may switch to is as the jars I did last night came out quite well. I was PCing jars as I posted this yesterday, and I used a 1:1 water to popcorn ratio. I came out with SLIGHTLY too much water in the bottoms even after hot shaking for a while so I dumped it onto paper towels and with gloves on tested to see how hard it was while I tried the excess water. It was surprisingly sticky and not very cooked at all, not what I expected from all that time pressure cooking. I also rinsed the extra sugars and starches that had washed out of the corn and created sort of a whitish goop at the bottom of the jar as from what I've read this just increases contamination risk. So I dumped it back into the jars after drying the excess water (it was still VERY wet, I dumped it in a big pile and didn't spread it out on the paper towel because i wanted to keep it very wet. I then pressure cooked it again for a little over 60 minutes and it came out looking like it had absorbed all the excess moisture that was covering it. Today I made a few more jars but dialed the water ratio back to 0.9:1. This still surprisingly left a TINY bit of water, but I had only pressure cooked for 90 minutes and as again it was still quite hard, I put it back in. It's actually still going as I speak, but I believe these will come out even better than yesterday's. I only saw a few specks of mycelium going on the popcorn jars, but its only been roughly 22 hours since inoculation. The millet/groat jars I inoculated yesterday (that I believed were perfectly hydrated) still don't show any mycelium except for one of four jars which is slightly worrisome but I'm not going to panic until day 3 or so. Just for the record, I've also tested Uncle Ben Tek and it works phenomenally well...I had heard some mixed things but I had great results, much much better than expected. I wish I had done ready rice at the very beginning when I was struggling to learn to do grain properly and not wasted money on pre-made grain spawn bags. Especially because the "magic bags" i bought from magicbag.com did not fruit at all. One grain spawn and two all-in-one bags completely failed and I'm 100% sure it was because they were WAY, WAY TOO DRY. I do not recommend that company at all. They did refund me, but I'd never use them again. The offered to send me new bags but I didn't want to waste the liquid cultures. Anway. sorry for the rant, but I wanted to share what I've learned in case it helps anyone else. I'm going to make another thread about sclerotia, and document the ATL #7 grow I'm starting tomorrow along with my next Tidal Wave, Purple Mystic, and Golden Teacher Harvest.

Thanks again for all the replies, and happy growing.

You have a really good point. I'm going to do a soak for the rye berries I'm using for ATL #7 tomorrow. While we're on the topic, do you know anything about coffee soaks? I read a tek on ATL #7 published by serious sclerotia grower, sunstone i think was the name, and he recommended using coffee+water to soak the rye. But I've read elsewhere that it only benefits the nutrient profile a tiny bit and really isn't worth the trouble.

:yields:

I'll bite on the atl7 question. You should properly fully prep grains, add your culture and ignore it for like half a year. You will have plenty of stones. It's a shame to end up with a bacterial mess after waiting for so long to save like 20 minutes of upfront work.

Someone might have better advice and more experience. For my stone cultures I streaked several plates and ignored them for a few months. I took the stones that grew and expanded them on media and then again on grain. I took the largest stones and repeated the cycle. I know your probably excited but in my opinion tamp and mexicana stones taste like a nutty 9 volt battery. I don't think they are worth the time and they are awful to work with dry. I try to avoid stoning cultures if I can. Before you start adding coffee and pixie dust to your grain you should get a baseline without it. Stones go in a planter or the compost if I'm not immediately using them.

You should grow semps and skip the stones. :rush:

I hard disagree on the flavour of stones. They taste like bitter walnuts to me but I don’t hate them. I can eat them fresh all night.

I second that. Big time. Nobody wants to see a giant wall of text, life is far too short.

Brevity is not only the soul of wit, it's pretty helpful on drug forum posts.

not to jump on the "ai doesn't know what the fuck it's doing" train but, it'll consistently fuck you over.

for your consideration, here's a ublock origin filter that just Removes google's ai from your search results entirely <3

I'd have to ask ai how to use a ublock origin anyway... :laugh2:

But not how to grow mushrooms. I'd probably blow something up... AI said the only way to reach full sterilization is to use pure ethanol in my pc instead of water. Like wearing two condoms.
