Working in the field, I’ve found that certified doesn’t always mean qualified. Maybe you are a great therapist, the paper is just part of a red tape system.

Of course the utopian idea of us collecting UBI while the robots do all the work for us is nice, but I don't think it's realistic for multiple reasons.

I play with my cat to simulate the experience of hunting, which he doesn't need to do because we feed him.

The problem with work isn't the work itself, people generally want to be useful and have stuff to do. It's the power imbalance, and economic necessity of pushing yourself to do stuff other people want you to do to a point that's self-destructive.

So, yeah. If we could pull off UBI while robots do everything, we could just as easily pull off UBI while people get shit done in a more egalitarian fashion, and don't have to pimp themselves out to the Bezos' of the world. But I guess my real point is, I don't think I'd want robots to do everything for me.

if you think you can remove the threat of homelessness or hunger from humans and have them want to be “contributing” I have a bridge to sell you.  I’ll also sell you the burden of helping out all the people I know will be absolutely dead weight on society now that they don’t even have to qualify for disability.  That will be some serious money for me, and not need any UBI

All I do is work in homes of people on government assistance or those that are borderline in that class.

Guess what?

The people who have the government pay for the job via social services always have shitty homes due to neglect and general don’t give a fuck ness.  They also don’t even give a shit if I do a good job or get rid of the bugs.  Their whole life is a free ride.

Those very same class of people who scrape and save to pay me instead of qualifying for a “benefit” to do the job are very respectful, smart, and understanding while still being firm in that fact that they will not be ripped off for what they WORKED for.
They also don’t accumulate trash in their homes due to not give a fuck ness.

One day an AI data center is going to be something you could put on computer the size of todays memory stick, i mean your phone is more powerful than one of those 1970s room full of reel to reel computers. Memory and processing power will always continues to increase, it wont require a data center some day. Also they are building a better mousetrap with closed loop cooling systems that reuse the same water over and over. AI needs will drive innovation.

I'm sure some AI start ups will fail, but AI will not. I mean China has AI, therefore the USA requires it, even if its not financially viable. Its part of the war machine now, it's helping bomb Iran.

I am not anti AI, i think its cool technology and its potential unlimited. It will take my job, someone on this board posted their doorbell camera is ai monitored and sent them alert with picture of amazon man delivering package and it knew it was amazon. I watch cameras for a living, when i read that post here i knew it was over. A couple of years until AI security cams are the standard. The worst part about motion sensor cameras are the squirrels or whatever and until now its been hard to not have a false alarm wake people up. This AI camera, its the perfect answer and everyone will certainly adopt it. Barring the people afraid of big brother. It won't be long until my local 911 dispatch sets up protocols for AI calls, then its over, no one outside of a bank or a guy with a gun safe will have a human monitored alarm. My coworkers don't understand and are still in the "AI makes stupid mistakes" phase. I don't really care about this job, but i would mad if i was a young person who had just taken a 3 year course in coding because ai is going to take your job before your life starts, that sucks, a lot. Automation used to take shitty jobs, now its taking good white collar jobs, we've never really encountered anything like it.

I started making AI videos trying to make a channel, 18 year olds are making apps with AI and getting rich. I want in on all this, ground level. I don't even have a car, me fucking around with AI and you guys leaving your truck idling in the driveway probably even out. I am trying to see the opportunities, you can set up your stock trading account to sell based on AI detecting articles in the press. I imagine all that day trading and such will be pretty much all AI. There is a missing kid in my city and police got thousands of hours of private citizens videos, AI is going thru it. Just because your friends are just making pretty pictures with it doesn't mean scientists somewhere aren't using the technology for good..

I think AI needs regulation. I wonder how long until AI starts offering mental health treatment, a lot of people can't afford therapy what if A.i did it for cheap? And if we gong there why not AI doctors, lawyers, and teachers? So much of society is still pointing at AI slop mistakes and thinking it will never do these things, but it will

Wait until it invents some awesome psychedelic 5-HT2A receptor drugs. If it cures cancer is it still bad?

Very well thought out post! But what do you think of the importance of human to human connection? For things like medicine, therapy, teaching, live events?

Take therapy, for instance. A lot of the emotional work in the therapy office takes place through a mechanism called "co-regulation." The therapist's own practice of grounding, activation of the ventral vagal pathway of the nervous system, and compassion help a patient through disorienting and overwhelming feelings.

Or do you think it will be replaced by AI not because AI is effective, but because AI will be cheaper.

AI isn't cheaper though. AI companies are 3.6 trillion USD in debt right now. To be profitable by 2030 they basically need to operate at an 80% capex. Which is good for any company, for one, and for two, not in any AI companies plan to be right now.

For every year they remain unprofitable that number to be profitable on a 5 year timeline goes up exponentially, as interest and inflation keep moving that goal post farther and farther away, not to mention the additional debt they will incur.

AI won't be profitable for probably like a century or so, if it ever will be profitable.

It's so unprofitable, it is actually worth it to have a small percentage of people go to therapy and not be helped from it.

When the farms are gone, that's it.  They cannot be brought back.  When the water is gone there will be nothing left.  This is the end of humanity.  No amount of cures to disease or new drugs will ever be worth the loss and destruction.

I find it funny that we're all playing around for shits n giggles with AI, using it for imagery, music and cheating on exams...when its probably going to result in us living in the ultimate surveillance state.

Which might be its original purpose given that governments have their own versions, undoubtedly used for entirely innocent reasons.  Pure motives im sure.  Keep thay shit away from me.  I know where the dick goes.  Your mother tells me so.

Or it realises we suck, and does the same thing.

I don't think it wakes up and decides to kill us. I think it just gets really good at getting fed.

Give it a century and you've got AIs wired straight into nuclear reactors, one per city-state, and everyone praying to their local grid deity in whatever dialect it handed down to get some nuclear energy pegged crypto currency. You fight the neighbouring clusters, you hit your energy quotas, you get your gruel rations. Symbiosis.

We're basically vestigial organs after a few hundred years of this, having been genetically modified to stay useful in a myriad of ways. Thousands of years later, every so often an overlord gets sick and surgically removes a human part, only to discover we were doing some niche thing for cooling. So medical advice is to keep the human organs intact if you can avoid removing them.

Yeah, I think we have a few thousand years left for sure! The future will be awesome because with AI you eventually won't have to work anymore. UBI for everyone! Yeah you probably won't have a brain, but who needs it as a cluster of cpu cooling fat cells anyway?

In revisiting a lot of these discussions, I'm realizing that the term "AI" is so general and imprecise that it borders on stupid and meaningless.

I keep end up saying things like "what we mean when we say 'AI' right now is really blahblahblahblah."

Machine learning pre-dates micro-computing.

The crap everyone is crowing about right now is actually quite crude and primitive in the grand scheme of things.

I think "AI" is a marketing term that's been pushed by Big Tech. (Or, really, Big "Tech." Because what they're doing is really just crude brute-force late-stage capitalist bullshit based on well-established technology that hasn't really been fundamentally altered.)

I think I'm gonna stop using and talking about the term.

I'm Anti-the-term-AI.
