Thanks for the answers guys.

We have a 3 day rainfall warning, so I am bringing it inside for now. No where in my yard stays dry when it starts raining sideways.

My grow closet has a JCM and a house fan on a timer so there is a lot of air movement. Humidity sits between 30-50%, and the temp is around 22C year round.

I'm definitely familiar with the site's search function. I have found soil guides, but I'm not finding specific answers to my questions yet or I'm finding conflicting information.

This was bought as an impulse father's day gift to myself, so all I have is the included soil. It will be about a month before I can get supplies for a different mix. This is the mix that the seller uses:

3 parts Promix w/ perilite
1 Part Sand
1 part crushed limestone

I gather that this is more organic material than what's recommended. Assuming it doesn't just die (which I accept is a possibility), when would be the soonest safest time to repot it again?

It's currently sitting in dry soil.

Two things I haven't been able to figure out.

1. I've seen that people recommend rainwater, but what would I use if rainwater isn’t available? Is distilled or spring better? My city tap water has a lot of minerals in it, I actually think it's causing my shroom grows problems.

2. I have one of those Amazon cheapo seedling/succulent multi-head LED light strips. Will that be too much or too little light? I also have a spider farmer grow light, but I'm guessing that's too bright for a young plant.

Picture of how I potted it:

I didn't mean to come across like you didn't know how to use the search function. I mentioned it because people offered you another website, that's in German, while you are already on a website with a plethora of information. Sure, it's slowed down a lot over the years but all the information still exists here.

This was once a place people first called into to learn how to grow plants for many years.

I can't answer about the water as I've never had to deal with that. Bottled or otherwise might have to do if the tap water is that bad.

Your soil mix sounds like the generic newbie blend everyone starts with. I'd get rid of the sand and replace that with scoria or perlite. I'd also lower the amount of organics.

If the light is sufficient then it may do alright in the closet. It will be continually in growth mode though, unless you allow it to go dormant. I grow outside so I can't advise too much there. If the plant is stretching upwards(etiolating) then it needs more light.

Let it rest in the new soil for about 2 weeks at least before watering. You don't want to love it to death and they can go for ages without water. It will grow new roots. Always allow it to dry fully before watering again. When you think it's dry then wait another 5-7 days to water. Learning how to water them is something you need to learn and being indoors this changes things too.

Haven't had a fruit this year but burnt some of my plants in the european heat wave, all looked fine in the late evening, but some had a decent sunburn a few hours later. Luckily nothing which won't be gone by the winter.

There is very good information here but its pretty decentralized, I know from were i started that it is hard to get the right informations together. The website i posted gives a beginner a pretty good plan on were to start and what to look for without having to read through a few dozens of grow logs.

For the water its fine to use tapwater or bottled water once or twice when your plant is very thirsty, but when used to often the minerals (especially in tap water) can build up and cause problems. In any case you should leave tap or bottled water open a few day before giving it to your plant so most things the water has been treated with can evaporate.
But realistically there are pretty much no instances where your plant will die or even take damage before the next rain.

With soil that's the hardest part as a beginner, I would just buy a astrophytum,  ariocarpus or lophophora mix, its a pain to get to know all the different type of stones and especially where to buy them (at least were i live). It only really makes sense when you got a lot of plants.

For your 2. Question
That cheapo amazon light would probably only be good for seedlings (i dont know the specs).
The spider grow light would probably be fine, but dont just throw them in there if its to bright it will be burnt.
But once it gets used to the light it can take pretty much anything.
Just make sure you get it accustomed slowly.
Rapid changes in light intensity will be a killer.

Growing them in a tent, in my opinion, only makes sense if its been used anyway for weed, otherwise the profit and loss calculation won't add up.

I understand you're trying to help but linking people to other websites just defeats the purpose of this forum existing. Like I said, it's all here and this was once THE PLACE people first called into.

If people ask questions then I will answer them best I can. Try and find links here to help people, etc.

Otherwise I should just *insert another website* and consider my work done. Or maybe I should just post the most generic comment in the cannabis thread? It seems that's where it's at these days........

Flushing the plant medium helps with not having dissolved solids build up in the soil. You allow water to drain through the soil mix and out the drain holes once in a while. Yeah, we mostly bottom water but doing this from time to time will help.

Re potting every couple to few years helps mitigate this, too.

Just buying a loph, ario or otherwise soil mix isn't practical for most people.

Soil is really easy starting out. It's not really complicated.

If PuffM4gicDr4gon comes back with more questions then we can answer those.

I do get you, but like I said for a beginner it is hard to navigate the amount of information on here.

Didn't mean to come off as lazy, just wanted to let other people know what helped me the best and I know that on here it is very decentralized and when I began I just didn't know where to start and where to go. Once I got the hang of it I could read other people's experiences and take what was valuable for me.

I see it more like giving advice on a good book to read and after reading exchanging about the contents. And the website is pretty much a book in websiteform. The guy actually wrote a book about it.

With soil i made different experiences especially with finding vendors who ship not in bulk, but I live on another continent so I guess its because of that.

I agree that this place is huge but many before you have manged to learn to navigate it. Soon enough you'll be a pro.

Alrighty. Some Lophophora for your bungholes.

Some are 20 years old. Some over a decade. All from seed.
I repotted them start of last season and I think I watered them twice. Looks like the spidermites are having fun.

I'm going to ramble a bit, so I'll bold my questions to make them easier to see.

I really appreciate the suggestions on soil.

I completely understand that it would be best for me to buy a bunch of individual materials to make a proper soil for my loph, but considering how small it is it feels like a lot of money and materials for such a small planter.

If this guy out grows the pot it's currently in, then I will definitely get the materials to do it right.

For what it is worth, the soil mix that came with it seems to be draining very well.

I watered it last week with some cactus fertilizer water. I dunked it up to just below the loph for 10 minutes and then drained it in a sink over night. The loph felt very squishy before watering, and a week later it is very firm.

I pushed some of the stones out of the way and the top centimeter of the soil is already completely dry. I do feel a bit of moisture in the hole at the bottom of the pot.

My plan is to wait until it's squishy again before watering. Hopefully this will compensate for the less than ideal soil.

I did notice a bit of white powder and what looks like damage. Is this something I need to be worried about?

As for growing conditions, this spring has been way too wet to hope to have my loph outside. We're normally quite dry, but the super el Nino has has it raining multiple days every week.

This means I'm stuck using my mushroom grow closet.

My JCM chamber keeps the room around 24c and 50-60% humidity. Will this temp/humidity cause me problems such as an increase in mildew or other pests?

I'm currently using the seedling light. My spider farmer light started fluctuating, so I don't trust it enough to use it. I'll get something better before winter.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an indoor light?

Thank you everyone again for taking the time to read this and respond!

The damage doesn't too look concerning, but its always something to look after. You should look at them very closely once a while to check for pests, a magnifying glass could help as some of them are very small. Not all insects are harmful those who are very fast most likely hunt bad insects.
If you ever find something the least invasive way to deal with it is to have them outside a couple of days, just make sure there won't be a drastic change in conditions.

Dont know much about growlight, I would just buy a small 50 bucks greenhouse.

The soil is not something too bad and doesn't need urgent action, but keep in mind that it take a couple years before it outgrows the pot. You can always buy a new mix but probably will do fine in this one.

Make sure your fertilizer has low nitrogen.

The rest sound fine to me

there might be some issues with this fricii graft so I want to split it up and hopefully not lose them all.  this one gives me hard times any time I try growing.  I might currently have one little baby mixed in with some williamsii in another pot, but i wont know for quite a bit.

I like to use string and plastic wrap when I have spines to wrap around,  but find myself using painting tape when they're so short,...what does everyone else use in this case?....i also make all my cuts at an angle, so the scion is rarely going to stay in that spot.

Hi!!!!

My 2cents! I have done the same when I was very new to them so long ago!
I am still learning! Anyway no more squeezing,
I know you're probably gentle but no mas no more :nono:
It can damage them slowly over time leading to soft tissue damage that
looks "bruised".

Top dressing is pretty ^^ most of the experienced or "leveled up"
cacti growers use it, but can be difficult to tell when the soil
is dry for novices and may even delay soil drying A BIT so up the perlite, pumice, and sand (not TOO much sand)! The delay can be caused by a thick
layer of top-dressing and then the plant does get airflow from aerated soil
from perlite and such and drainage hole, but possibly not from the surface.
Depending on what was used of course (volcanic rock, clay, sand, etc)

Water only IN WARM GROWING SEASON and ONLY WHEN COMPLETELY DRY.
They are a little sensitive to water. Picking up the planter
and seeing if it's still heavy is a good way to check but not always
if the pot is clay or anything else "heavy".
WATER SUPER SMALL AMOUNTS during WINTER ONCE A MONTH ONLY.
Or they can easily die. Do not panic if overwatered, just give plenty
of light, warmth and air. Do not cook/burn cacti in sun to dry out.
For yours I recommened, guessing from the photos, 1 to 1/2 a Tablespoon
of water (NO FERT) ONCE a month during winter!
:snowman::snowcat:

When winter happens, give them as much light as possible, even
right next to a window is fine (IF it's not snowy temperatures near window)
Don't be surprised if your precious Loph(s) go from green to grey.
That's entirely normal, and they gain their OG color in early Spring.
:peyote::peyote::peyote:
:badpeyote::badpeyote::badpeyote:
I think they're camo to look like rocks and stones.
Speaking of which, if in the closet, even with a fan sometimes mine
need to still "breath" when in there for 12 hours/days. Yes the roots
do still need SOME oxygen, from perlite and pumice, wind and microcurrents,
and the drainage hole(s) in the pot. Closets can be a bit stagnant.
:peyote::peyote::peyote:
If you can maybe leave the Lophopho in a safe spot outside in the bright SHADE for a little while if there's no risk of rain, frost, or visitors.
THEN for me, does closet growing them work fine! 🥳 bring back in before
dark.
:lophcrankey:
I use moderate biggish LED's, same stuff applies to them as Marijuana plants do.
Keep it cool, keep it 15-16 inches away at least. Use full color
spectrum if possible. Don't go lower than 150 Wattage and don't go over 500 watts, just because you likely don't need THAT much XD
Not too much light, don't "light burn" or bleach the cacti like you can with cannabis.

Don't make your plants look like a nuclear bomb went off next to them.
Get your (MILD or small) LED light close to your cactus as close as possible without touching it.
That does NOT apply for bigger, stronger, grow dot LED's ⚠️

What wattage is your light? Do you have any fans on circulating in the closet? Flowers for me only seem to bloom with natural sun, not even
the brightest & safest LED setting.
:rose:
Don't fertilize for another two or three weeks, keep it mild, a bit under
the recommended dosage (if it calls for 1 tsp for 1 gallon, use 1/2 tsp)
Your fert will likely work too, if you ever run out you can also
user garden veggie/flower fertilizers too. Or even with your cactus food too
combined, just of course remember to watch the ratios, of course
too much concentrated food can be deadly ⚠️
Beautiful little mature plant, looks like LW Caespitosa likely and
with the soft epidermis you mentioned! 😸

Hi stagger!!!! 🥳
Oh yeah man, do what you can! You can use even electrical tape too,
which many do since it's kinda stretchy. Only problem for me
is it's not transparent so I get OCD about it XD only 9-10 days
then I removed the rubber bands I use. They work too but you gotta first
"eyeball" the rubber bands to make sure it'll properly fit, AND they
tend to squeeze the d*ckens outta the poor scion.
Ah I'm sorry little fella :frown:
I hope you get it fixed soon!
PS remember check after a week or after removing the tape/rubberbands/etc.
Check if there's new growth, if so then 95% chance the scion successfully
took hold. Now be careful with watering and light!

PS sorry if I am typing like I'm being condescending at all, I'm not trying
to be just wanted to pitch in. For all I know you guys are way better than me
with growing them! Most of all be safe and have fun!
