Not repeating “economist.” Pointing out this needs them.

Google any of it. I’ll wait.

That's not how it works

:batlol:

Why are you repeating all these statistics if you don't know that statistics don't mean anything without a source?

Ok but lets just work out taking away all the wealthy built over time and make it state run industry.  Even if that is done you still can't feed and house everyone in the united states.

If we do anything different something bad might happen!

Wealth tax sounds good to me, but any small step shouldn't be oversold as a holistic solution. Even if we murdered all of the billionaire families and seized their assets and wealth, we'd still be in a world of shit. I'm skeptical that a majority of socialists even care about the longevity of life on earth, and just want to milk the broken system for a couple generations longer than capitalism would. We desperately need to do stuff, anything, everything, right now. But I don't think people realize that life as we know it is not currently sustainable for the amount of population we have right now. Capitalism has already overextended earth's resources. USA consumes more than any other country twice over. Even the lower-class Americans calling for rent control and universal healthcare are already in the top 10% of global wealth. I think it's absurd to be focused on increasing the standards for the top 10%, even if it comes out of the top 1%. It's almost irrelevant to how much ecological debt we're accumulating. Redistributing wealth from anyone with over a million dollars, and the rest of Americans getting none of it, would be a more appropriate start, and still just a drop in the bucket. But I guess no one would vote for that. So are we doomed to tiny incremental moves that will never address the bigger crisis we're in? Instead of speed running extinction we'll half-ass it?

I feel like weve come to common areas on this before, icon.
Id agree that this is a tiny incremental drop in the bucket.
But.maybe if we can get ppl to start thinking about this and redistribute things more equitably, it might get ppl to stop thinking only about their falling living standards(even tho still so much higher than global counterparts) and begin to think a but more holistically om the global ecological and global equity front.
We need policy that helps ppl to make ppl wanna help other ppl and our planet, i think.
When we cant muster the ideology to level the playing field at home, we wont be able to do it abroad.
Also if more countries did this in tandem we may get a response that limits the flight of billionaires, and collectively doing so puts countries in a position where the government gets to gain back all the wealth theyve lost over 40 years, and just maybe if they arent dead broke, they can enact policy that tends away from exploitation and the pilfering of the growth economies.
Just spitballing

Maybe. We have a lot in common and I always appreciate your input. I wish more people could be honest about what they're expecting from socialism tho, because I worry a lot of people are not on board with the sacrifices we should be making. Ending wealth accumulation should be the first step, but I don't think people are looking much further ahead than that. I'd bet a majority believe that stripping the business class of their wealth will enable middle class lives for everyone (in America). People are looking forward to a fantasy.

We can probably manage free healthcare, housing, and food security. But beyond that? The American economy is still a consumer economy that is crashing and bleeding money on imports. I don't think even socialism could bring back manufacturing, for example. Taking out profit is going to require a dramatic transformation of industries. A lot of stuff we take for granted now could be deemed unsustainable and banned. Fresh fruit imported during all seasons, meat every day, four-bedroom houses, automobiles for everyone, Amazon products delivered next day, indoor cannabis, AI, tourism... just a few examples of things that should probably be cut if we want humans to still be around in 100 years.

We should just cut to the chase and end private ownership entirely. Then no one can complain that they're being targeted, everyone will be evenly entitled to nothing until we can get back on a sustainable course. THAT would be an inspiring move that the rest of the world could get behind.

Socialism lite is just going to look like capitalism 2.0 to the nations that bear the brunt of our consumer habits. It would be like removing Lindsey Graham but still keeping the system that creates new shit politicians. If we continue consuming at the same level little will change.

I dont think it can bring back much of those things now either. In a global landscape, its done china is manu powerhouse and theres really no way to even grab much from them..
A bit of socialism isnt gonna be a utopia imo its gonna be a bit of balancing the scales again. Give the working class a break with these sorts of programs you are speaking of, being paid for with such a tax.
It gets ppl with the ground underneath them again. Rn we dont even have that.
Im minimalist, i dont consume like most, i understand im also in the minority.
En masse we have to adjust, i agree in that.
I dont believe in the consumer/materialist paradigm(thats why we are here) but most do.
That must change.
We are obese.
We are in debt.
These things must change too.
Theres so many places to start ripping at the beast, but ya gotta start somewhere.
Norway doesnt have a fucking obesity problem, im not sure of their gdp nor their national debt but its a whole different landscape here, unfortunately.
And therefore i agree alot else has to change too, but we have to implement some beginning of a curb to the madness.
Something like the billionaire act(something like, i said cubedryeguy)
Is a good beginning.
I dont fucking know how to knock ppl out of hustle culture, until ppl suffer enough i guess and some kind of bill of this sort would show weve gotten there

Simple oppression lead to hustle culture, oppression of people committing crimes leads to felons only able to get gig work. To get rid of it you use oppression to get rid of gig workers like California and Newsom has tired to do.

You can't tax the wealth out of people to save  every one.
$30.76 trillion gdp 2025. Dividends by 390 million people is 78871.79 per person . Usa spends 31,077 a year on people in poverty.
https://epicforamerica.org/federal-budget/welfare-spending-almost-double-the-poverty-threshold-per-impoverished-person/
So if I double all the amount we spend on the poor in democratic socialist while also killing off wealth, we would be better off how?
