Contam. on a colonized cake
    #29616326 -

Question: I have a cake ready to go into second flush. I scraped the top to remove the old 1st flush layer. I put it into a Martha tent and it sprang to life. After 2 days though, I'm noticing the green mold contam. in patches.I dug those sections out, returned it to the tent. Is that normal on a colonized cake? Is there a preventative measure I can use to stop it? Thank you for the advice.

It was inactive for more than 2 weeks. That top layer was solid. It started to recolonize, make hyphae soon after I scraped it.  Here's some pics.

You can actually bury contaminated cakes with some coir and they will fruit.  There are people on here who have done it.

Yeah, unfortunately when a cake gets to the point of growing some green on it, it is contaminated and is less likely to be as productive. As mentioned, sometimes they'll grow out of a compost pile or outdoor bed

Early contamination is usually the result of a hole in sterile technique, however after a couple of flushes it is more likely it set in regardless. Not a whole lot that can be done after it sets in. Best way to off set the loss is to keep the projects rolling :mushroom2:

OK, I have those exact tubs. How does this sound? I scraped off what green I could (which turned out to be a lot, on the sides especially) and I'll pop it in a tub with casing under, around and on top. One more question. Can I/should I cut the cake up a bit so it fits all in one thickness and not a mound in the middle of the tub? Will it screw up the mycelium, stall it a lot? Kill it? Thank you guys for the advice.
