Newbie (long time lurker) finally asking for help with new monotubs!
    #29608026 -

Hello fellow shroomers!

A quick back story about me: I've been a bit of a lurker for a while, having gotten into growing shrooms a couple of years ago. I started off at first with growkits (as I think most people do), and then after seeing the "hate" that they get, finally decided to try my hand out doing everything from scratch.

I decided to start off small, simply repurposing the plastic boxes from growkits that me and my friends bought and using them to start to get the hang of things. As you can see, I guess I had a stroke of beginners luck indeed!

My process was simple; use millet grain, and the substrate was simply a blend of coco coir and vermiculite. I used to add the gypsum too but apparently it's not needed any more?

I've successfully grown GT's, Mexicana, McK, Mazapatec and even got my hands earlier this year on BV's...which are amazing btw!

Needless to say, I've now got a million questions to ask after gaining a bit of experience. So far I've relied mainly on a few pdf's I found on the net on growing mushrooms and a bit of lurking here and there. Up until now, I didn't have many issues but recently I wanted to grow bigger batches and tried my hand at prepping new monotubs...and that's when the problems started.

Long story short, the mycelium would expand pretty quickly once everything was prepped into the monotub, which was sealed fully (holes covered with 3M micropore tape and additional ducktape), as I was under the impression that you really need to up the humidity and CO2 levels at first.

However, a few times my monotubs stalled and even developed serious contam, but even if they didn't, they never fruited or even pinned!

Only a few times did I get some success but the mushrooms only grow around the sides. So my theory is that I essentially suffocated the mycelium too much. Now my plan is to remove the micropore tape and simply use polyfill from the start...but then that's why I'm here!

I hope you guys can help me out?

Right now I've got 2 tubs that look like this, is this too much humidity on the inside? I've also got pins forming around the sides again near the holes, so is my hole placement wrong or what?

Please ask away about my process in case I've missed anything because I'm sure there are some details I'm overlooking.

Much appreciated!!!

Hmmmm.... the surface conditions seem to be quite good.
(plenty of dropplets, no bruising...)

I cannot gauge how thick your substrate is, and in my limited experience, what actually stopped the side pinning more than anything, for me, was to make the cakes a lot thicker.

The first time i grew, i had this very thin, 2~3 cm cakes, and they always, always side pinned.

When i switched to make them a lot thicker, 5~8 cm thick, and much more compressed, the side pinning almost stopped and the top started to pin more uniformly.

Another thing i noticed is that if there is "too much mycellium", it will struggle more to pin. As if the pins like to form more "on the substrate".

I've looked a bit more at your photos, and you might want to give them a little bit more air ?

Looks wet to me I would give that thing some more fresh air and up the evaporation.

Thanks for the responses guys! I gave them a little more ventilation getting rid of the micropore tape and using polyfill, and lo behold pins started forming. After a few days, this is what they look like.

Here's an update.

Tub 1 & 2 (Mexicana)

I had a bit of contam in the bottom corner, literally scraped off that area and nuked it with H202, now the mycelium (?) is growing strangely...at least there are some nice shrooms on the other side though!

Tub 3 (Moby Dick)

This one hasn't pinned well, even with me trying to scrape the mycelium a little with a fork down the centre. Right now I'm giving them a spritz 2-3 daily and fanning a little.

Any tips/comments?

Just measured them, they are on average around 5 cm thick. Perhaps I've got too many/too big holes at the sides?

H2O2 never works out and seems to make it worse when you fuck with it.

Forking is for overlay type events. Not usually used for even pinning.

Fanning isn't needed either. Dial in your FAE and you got it.

Here's an update guys!

First box grew pretty well. Not my best flush but I'll take what I can get.

Can't say the same for my other box though...not sure what the hell happened.

I've got 2 more boxes left and this is the current state. It's not clear in the pics but one of them has started pinning, with the other one showing signs of the knots forming.

Heh, easy for you to say, I'm still learning how to do it properly!

This is my current box design. What should I do now? Appreciate the help

Should I remove the polyfill? I fear that I may lose moisture too quickly.

And also. Those tubs with latch handles have holes in the handles. I norm run 7 to 9 qt small tubs unsure if it works for bigger tubs though I just leave lid latched till colonized then when colonized I mist surface then put one of the latches under the lid to prop up one side or both. (Idk if works for larger tubs) Though that works for all cubes for ochras for caerulescens for pan cyans n probably more that I ain't tryed just yet n I mist 3 ft away from a tub 1x a day when I do it like that maby 2x  (maby a shit ton more for caerulescens lol I was misting it for few days ere 10 minutes LOL to develop the caps for some prints)  (and small cubensis pins are delicate be gentle when misting pins. Farther away is safer.

(Other methods are more dialed in mine I haven't actually worked on perfecting it.

In second pic u can see latch pushed under lid to raise

Yep, I get your method. I also do that too, I think it's called "cracking" or whatever. I'll thin out the polyfill too, to give it more air. Fingers crossed.
