1/10

and im pretty sure it breaks down in light (which would explain the bottle), so keep it in a dark place, or keep putting it in the bottle with fresh water every day/spray

A capfull of bleach is a stupid assed thing to spray onto cakes/casing/mushrooms that are going to end up in your system. And besides that bleach is a stupid assed thing to spray about where you can inhale.

Especially since you dont even know the size of their sprayer. I have one that holds a half gallon and I have one I use more frequently that holds about a pint. Thats one hell of a difference when were talking a chemical as powerful as bleach being sprayed on live organisims.

Bleach breaks down within a hour or 2 on live organisms. It renders contamination considerably for healthier mycelical growth in casings and for the aid in preventing sour perlite in tetarriums The size of the sprayer doesn't matter when it comes to 1 cap full fo bleach, which is minimal. I use a 1/4 of a cup of bleach in between flushes in dunk water for casings, not cakes. Very effective. H202 only will slow your work down considerably, By the way, I'm not trying to be a post whore or act like Mr. Smart Guy. I've just been doing this hobby for a while. No harm intended. I'm just trying to help out.

Can you "seal" casings by spraying moisture on the casing layer such that it will prevent pins from pushing through?  I believe I read this on another site and I'd like to know if the moisture would cement the casing material particles together and hinder pinning.  Cheersums.  :stoned:

You just described Hydrogen Peroxide. Not bleach.

I'm kind of confused as to how you can think bleach is so safe. You seem like you got some knowledge up there but man... bleach? Here lets see what the medical dictionarys have to say:

Bleach:
--------------
"Definition
This poisoning is due to an exposure to powdered or liquid bleach.

Poisonous Ingredient

* Sodium hypochlorite

Where Found

* Household bleaches
* Other cleaning products

Symptoms

* Respiratory
o Breathing difficulty (from inhalation)
o Throat swelling (which may also cause breathing difficulty)
* Eyes, ears, nose, and throat
o Severe pain in the throat
o Severe pain or burning in the nose, eyes, ears, lips, or tongue
o Loss of vision
* Gastrointestinal
o Severe abdominal pain
o Vomiting
o Burns of the esophagus (food pipe)
o Vomiting blood
o Blood in the stool
* Heart and blood vessels
o Hypotension (low blood pressure) develops rapidly
o Collapse
* Skin
o Irritation
o Burn
o Necrosis (holes) in the skin or underlying tissues
* Blood
o Severe change in pH (too much or too little acid in the blood, which leads to damage in all of the body organs)

Home Treatment

DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If bleach is on the skin, wash with lots of water. If bleach is swallowed, give milk or water and seek emergency medical care immediately."
--------------------------------------------

"Household bleach, the most frequent cleaning substance ingestion, is also the most common toxic exposure in the United States overall(18)"

---------------------------------------------
"Sodium hypochlorite toxicity is based on the interaction with mucous membranes producing hypochlorous acid. Sodium hypochlorite 5.25% - solutions have a pH of 10.8-11.4. In a canine model with simulated household bleach (sodium hypochlorite 5.25%) ingestion there was immediate frothing of the bleach on contact with the esophageal lining followed by diffuse hemorrhagic oozing from the esophageal mucosa and hyperemic gastric mucosa(16). However, there were no strictures seen on esophagoscopy after three months and no gastric or esophageal lesions were seen on necropsy."
----------------------------------------------
"Standard laundry bleach is supplied as a 5.25% concentration of sodium
hypochlorite, dissolved in water. Dilute it down 10:1 with water, and
you have a 0.525% concentration. 100:1, 0.0525%....and so on.

The procedure I'd use is to start with a standard mold sample that you
can use to inoculate an agar plate. Make up some test solutions of
different bleach concentrations. Since bleach is pretty powerful stuff,
I'd start out with a 100:1 dilution. Mix up a sample of that, carefully
measured by volume. To make a 1000:1 dilution, use a sample of the 100:1
dilution with ten times as much water. For 10,000:1, take some of the
1000:1 sample and dilute ten times. "
--------------------------------------------------------------

Wow doesnt bleach sound plesant? Lets see how toxic h202 is.

H202:
----------------
"a powerful oxidizer that looks like water -- in its appearance, chemical formula and reaction products"
-----------------------------------------------
"Safe - Despite its power, H2O2 is a natural metabolite of many organisms, which decompose the H2O2 they produce into oxygen and water. H2O2 is also formed by the action of sunlight on water -- a natural purification system for our environment. Consequently, H2O2 has none of the problems of gaseous release or chemical residues that are associated with other chemical oxidants. "
--------------------------------------------------
"< 8% H2O2 Examples: Baking soda - peroxide toothpaste (0.5%)
Contact lens sterilizer (2%)
Over-the-counter drug store Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
Liquid detergent bleach (5%)
Hair bleach (7.5%)
Rating(s): Non-hazardous"

Yes you can. Ever notice when it realy dry out and has been for a while, then it rain. How well does the water absorb into the ground? Flooding is often resulted from this because the ground gets sealed from being wet and then drying hard and it wont absorb moisture anymore. You can also get the same affect if you spray your casing until theres puddles..usually when the puddle dries you have a section of sealed (if only partially). To prevent sealing, mist a little at a time, alot of times a day/week. Keep the casing moist but never over saturated. Always mist with very fine mist. The best is the kind like this green one:

I feel what your saying for sure. But any toxins from bleach break down rather quickly from live organisms or even in a load of wash. It's effectiveness is within the first hour. If you've ever done a bleach dunk for 4-6 hours, after you pull a casing out there is no sign that the bleach was ever in there. No bleach smell, only the pleasant smell of mushroom mycelium. As far a consuming fruit from a bleach dunked casing, you'll be fine. Toxins or anything harmful are gone within a matter of 1-2 hours tops. H202 will only slow down mycelical growth considerably. It should be removed from any archive on the web for use in casings, cakes, and liquid inoculum. Agar and antiseptic use only when it comes to H202 IMHO.

I can show you what the bleach dunk tek can do for a casing that had been exposed to H202 and trich, but it's on another sight. I'll give you the link if it doesn't offend this community. Just let me know.

I have seen the bleach tek. Its on mycotopia. I'm not just talking out of my ass here. Bleach doesnt break down. Your talking h202. If you find the bleach tek (look for Hippies posts, its his), you'll notice that he mentions to ONLY use bleach on CONTAMED cakes/casing and he gives a particular DILUTION to use, not just "a capful". I believe the dilution is 100:1 as well. H202 breaks down readily within a few hours however when applied to any enzymes.

H202 you can gurgle with. Bleach you cant.
H202 you can add to your drinking water to sterilize it. Bleach you cant.
Bleach is used in dilutions of 200:1 to scrub grease of counters and floors. How powerful is that?

I think bleach is a dumb assed idea thats gonna make some people sick if they decide to follow it. Please feel free to post anything that proves me wrong though. I'd like to see some advanced people say a cap full of bleach into the sprayer is fine. Or to see some sights that show how much it benefits us over h202.

I think that you read a bunch of shitty information before and kept this stupid idea of bleach without actually seeing for yourself that h202 DOES NOT NEGATIVLY affect growth other then sometimes slowing it down a little if you use to much. In a day or so once disolved though, the mycelium comes right back!

Just in case it was not mentioned...

Bleach can and will kill myc , and if myc is exposed to it alot it will also cause many mutations in matured mushies.
This misting with peroxide is an overkill IMHO , but if you are going to do it a 20:1 ratio is more than enough to help fight contams. 20:1 means 20 parts water to 1 part peroxide i.e. 200mls of water to 10 mls of peroxide.
Bleach is for laundry , cleaning lab areas,and sterilizing jars and grow chambers that were growing nasties !

Cause that lazy son of a spacevox :wink: can easily find his answer by searching this site... :grin:

On topic:
I dont use h2o2 in my sprayings. I think pawpaw gave good advice too.

PS: :wtf: "I can show you what the bleach dunk tek can do for a casing that had been exposed to H202 and trich" Is H2O2 some sort of contam or mold IYHO? :lol:
