This jar is has a pin, not fully colonized yet. What's the standard operating procedure here? Let it ride or birth it early? Thanks for any help.

Hrmmmmm....well, I've not directly encountered that situation myself. I would be inclined to let it ride so that the cake fully colonizes before birthing, otherwise you may lose some cake during the dunk-n-roll step.  Cakewonder - any words of wisdom?

That Jack Frost is aching to get out and grow! Way to go!

Mushrooms are so weird, why is it pinning from the seemingly uncolonized bit...

Speaking of mushrooms aching to get out and grow... My huautla colonized quick, this jar is pinning and the other one is knotting quite a bit.

I checked the rules, not sure how much the first picture being pre or post birth matters. I'm going to birth and soak a couple cakes in the morning, but wanted to get a good picture of that one pinning in the jar. (This may not be my pre-dunk-and-roll entry picture in the end, just showing you all.)

Might be a response to contamination?

Pop the lids open and then shut them hard to replenish some oxygen, it might be lack of oxygen that causes the stall.

I had this happen to me and I chose to birth and dunk it. After birthing I removed the uncolonised parts that were loose then dunked and rolled. It was successful and produced a good amount, going for its second flush right now.

So would this photo be okay for a pre dunk and roll?

Then if it does well I take an after photo of the first flush and edit my first post with the two cake photos for entry?

What categories do we have right now?

Thanks

A lot of mushrooms prefer to pin at the sides of the substrate, because it gives the spores a better chance to find a new home.

Faery rings are one of the most striking examples of this, a circle of side pins.

Why it stopped colonizing I don't know.  Could be contamination or a dry section of substrate.  Or an over eager strain trying to get spores out before its siblings (assuming MS inoculation).

yep, that’s awesome! your understanding of the rules and what to do is 100% correct. Best of luck!

As of right now, we only have the overall class, and (I think) ochra.  I’ll post a followup request to try to clarify and get info from participants.

ALL PARTICIPANTS:  I need some info from each of you as to the varieties you are growing/intending to enter, so that I can determine if we will have any subclasses of competition. Right now, we have the “overall” and (I think) a ochra subclass.

Please declare/repost the varieties you are growing, and I’ll  organize the list and see if we’ll have any subclasses of competition.

The available subclasses of competition are: classic cubes, ochra, PE-variants, pans, subtropicalis, and woodlovers.

In order for a subclass to form, there *must* be at least two entrants in the same subclass.

Just cubes for me: Huautla, Rusty Whyte, Syzygy.

I attempted to do ochra too (using up the last of an old Natal Super Strength MSS), but the cake didn't take, and I composted it after a month with no signs of life.

BM, X7X+, Trinity, GT, Ochra are cakes I inoculated for CWII, two of each.

So far the only colonized cake from this set MSS set is one of the BM one.  (The other cake in pic is a little side experiment)

I dunked it for a while then "rolled" it in field capacity coir but there wasn't really much rolling able to be done so I kinda packed the coir on into a baseball shape sorta.

Idk, I may have to buy some vermiculite or read up on some techniques. Perhaps my coir isnt fine enough, it kinda just falls off

Re: CAKE WARS II - Ends June 30, 2026 [Re: Archespore]
    #29583856 -

@Archespore - yeah, the dunk is written as a overnight soak, to give the cake as much water as it will take up. I don’t know how critical the dunk time period really is, but we may find out!

The roll in verm or coir is to adhere a layer of moisture-retaining material on the surface to help maintain surface conditions. Not much adheres, so the guidance in the tek is to roll, wait a few hours and then mist lightly.

So, once rolled and set into a water tub, the name of the game is to mist them twice daily lightly…once in the morning and once at night is usually enough.  If your cakes start to shrink (i.e., start showing a concave appearance on the top or sides) they may need more water. In that case i set mine into upturned lids and put water into the lids and just let the cakes slowly absorb whatever water they’ll take.

Best of luck!
