Popcorn jar Day 14 - How's it looking?
    #29570675 -

Hey guys, looking for some feedback on this 660ml popcorn jar.

Quick details:
• Strain: BHT (Agar wedge)
• Prep: No soak, 25 min simmer. PC for 3 hours @ 8 PSI (vented).
• Timeline: Day 14. Did a B&S on Day 8.
• Temp: 22°C (72°F)
• Micropore tape on lid.

Does this myc look healthy to you? I'm planning to spawn it to a 5L shoebox. How much longer should I let it ride before sending it to bulk?

Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to Shroomery!

As for the jar - I don't have much expiriance with corn but the myc looks fine to me. There is a little bit condensation, but I dont see any wet spots that can indicate contamination or anything else.
You should wait until it'll be 100% colonized and then I like to wait at least few days more just to be sure it is colonized inside and out. Spawning to shoebox is good idea.
What pressure cooker do you have?

Everything looks good to my eye. You should be able to get fruits soon. I'll be happy to see your results. Keep us posted :goodluck:

Sorry for the late reply! I'll post an updated picture of the jar soon.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely wait for 100% colonization plus an extra day or two just to be safe.

As for my PC, it's a 17L stovetop model with a standard pressure valve. It fits seven 660ml jars. I raised the jars on foil balls and a metal pizza pan, used 3L of water (1L was left after a 30-min vent + 3 hours at pressure). I backed off the lids a quarter turn and covered them with foil. Honestly, my whole process is built on the teks and TC comments I read here, so a huge thanks to this community!

I actually have a question about my next step. I'm planning to spawn to bulk using Damion5050's Coir Tek (just coir + vermiculite, no gypsum). However, I just realized the 650g coir brick I bought has some NPK added to it (around 0.2% Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium). The seller listed it as pure coir, but it looks like a potting mix.

Will this small amount of NPK cause contamination issues, or is it still safe to use?

I'll keep you guys updated with the results. Thanks again!

Any reason you PC at 8psi?

A little NPK never hurts.

As for the NPK - for cubes it not necessary but it won’t hurt but check out this thread CV+
Coir + liquid fertilizer is a really interesting concept for nitrogen dependent/exotic species

Thanks for the reply! My stovetop PC doesn't have a pressure gauge, but it has PS/PH ratings stamped on it. The PS (working pressure) is 0.55 bar (~8 PSI) and the PH (max safety pressure) is 1.1 bar (~16 PSI). Because there's no gauge to adjust it, I just have to run it at its normal operating limit of 8 PSI. Good to know a little NPK won't hurt!

I checked out that thread you linked and it’s fascinating. Thanks for sharing! If I ever decide to grow TTBVI in the future, thanks to you, I now know a method to pull it off without needing to source manure. Really appreciate the help!

Update: I finally spawned my jar to a shoebox!

Here is what the jar looked like right before spawning:

Since my 660ml jar was about 3/4 full, I estimated I had around 500ml of spawn. I used Damion5050’s CV tek and prepped my bulk substrate with 65g of coir and 200ml of vermiculite (aiming for a 1:2 spawn-to-bulk ratio). I also saved a little bit of the sub to use as a top layer (pseudo-casing).

I remembered reading somewhere on here that using a double-layered liner does a better job of preventing side pins, so I went with a double liner.

I do have one question about my tub, though. I'm doing a "shoebox", but my tub is just a standard 5L rectangular storage container, not an actual shoe box.

Here’s what it looks like:

Actual shoe boxes usually have lids that allow for a bit of passive gas exchange. My tub's lid isn't 100% airtight, but it definitely snaps shut tighter than a regular shoe box. Do you guys think this will choke the mycelium during colonization? Should I flip the lid, or just leave it snapped shut for now?

Ah! another fellow popcorn grower

Your jars looked good, as for the shoebox, i use the same kind you posted the photo of.

They work well, and don't worry about the air exchange, they are not airtight.

Especially up to the late pinning stage there is no need for massive airflow, at least in my case....

Once the pins start to grow i let the lid a bit open, and during pinning i open the case like once a day for 30 seconds and fan it a bit. it works.

Popcorn is great spawn if you can get it sterile. I’ve found feed corn is more of a pain than the savings gain, but I can’t hit 15PSI in my PC either. Upgrading from digital would likely help.

Looking great!

Truth to be told, cube micellium grows thicker on grain than popcorn, but nothing beats the shake on popcorns.

I give it 2 or 3 taps and all the kernels are loose.
With grain i feel like i'm beating someone :ducklol:

I have to hit the grain jars against my legs or against some piece of rubber for ages before the grain kernels break loose xD

Good to know the tub will work fine. I'll keep the lid snapped shut for the colonization phase. I agree about the popcorn—the break and shake is effortless compared to other grains.

Running the PC for 3 hours at 8 PSI seems to have handled the sterilization well. No signs of contam so far.

I actually went with popcorn for my first run because it's considered beginner-friendly. However, I’ve read that other grains like brown rice might provide better yields. What grain would you guys recommend trying next instead of popcorn?

I usually run oats for cubes - and $12 for a 50lbs bag is tough to beat.

I’m dialing in my corn because I have pan cyans I want to grow and folks have said pans love corn.

Testing Milo out right now and it seems to be going really well. I have yet to find it cheap near me and I’m surrounded by feed stores. 🤷🏼‍♂️

if you're looking for easy as possible you need to check out BODs journal. its literally dumbed down to be usable by anyone with not a lot of investment, and the guy knows what he's talking about.

I'd recommend rye or wbs, millet is my next but its kind of dense and can really become solid blocks and shaking is hard lol

Thanks for the grain recommendations, guys.

Update:
We are on Day 6 for the 5L shoebox. The mycelium growth is clearly visible now. Let me know what you guys think.

I also wanted to show you my two other 660ml jars that are a bit behind the first one. My plan is to spawn both of these together into a 10L tub, keeping the same 1:2 spawn-to-bulk ratio. How are these looking to you?

Second jar:

Open to any and all advice!

Lookin good IMO! Tub seems like it's on track. First jar seems a day or two away from being fully colonized, but I usually like to give it an extra 4 to 7 days to really lock in, since open grain spots are a contam vector when going to coir.

Thanks for the input. You're right—I also like to give my jars an extra 2-3 days after they hit 100% just to be safe and let them consolidate.

Regarding the shoebox: I haven't opened the lid at all yet. When do you guys recommend I open it and introduce FAE?

Also, just based on the pictures, does the surface moisture and condensation look okay to you?

I would just stuff some foil shims between the lid and top of the shoebox and let it sit that way, do it in about 3 days or when the surface of the tub is slightly more colonized. it looks like the myc is reaching up, soon it will fall down and give you colonization of the top layer, and from there you get knots and pins. again, look up BODs unmodified tub Tek. you don't really need to do anything from this point on unless you see standing water on the subs.

Thanks for the detailed info. Since this is my first run, I'm kind of just learning what to expect at each stage as I go, so this is very helpful.

A quick question about the lid: Instead of using foil shims, would simply flipping the lid upside down work just as well? If I do go with the foil shims, roughly how much of a gap should I be aiming to create?

I'll keep a close eye on it day by day and continue to update this thread with pictures as things progress.

Update: 5L Shoebox - Day 11
(Strain: BHT | Ratio: 1:2 Spawn-to-Bulk)

So far, I haven't misted the tub at all. The lid has been kept shut since day one, except for opening it for about a minute just now to snap these photos.

Looking at it, the substrate surface seems a little dry to me. Do you guys think I should give it a light misting at this stage?

Also, should I start leaving the lid slightly cracked/diagonal to introduce FAE at this point? Or would simply flipping it upside down be a better option?

Open to any suggestions.

Get to know the conditions that mushrooms need to thrive, and you’ll see the tub will tell you what to do.

The goal is to create a favorable microclimate. The more we fiddle, the more we disrupt it. Sometimes we need to change things, but doing something just for the sake of following a tek is never the right call, unless the tub demands it. Not implying that is what you’re doing.

You want to balance out gas exchange with the hydration of the sub. The sub, at field capacity, at the right temp, create it’s own humid climate. This is because mycelial growth is exothermic. Heat + sun water content == humidity.

So, look at GE as a lever to moderate the microclimate. If the climate is good, leave it alone.
