Hierarchy

If there are higher realms
Deeper dimensions containing intelligence
(And there is every reason to think there are)
They are complex, and very probably hierarchical

The most powerful being is at the top
With decreasingly powerful beings
As one descends from the highest—
Possibly you have heard of many of these beings

These superpowerful beings
Are simply a result of the logic
That there are other beings in the cosmos
Besides humans

And, continuing the thread
All these different species
Must have different levels of sophistication
With the most powerful at the top of the heap

Like on Earth
This proliferation of beings
Must have an innumerable number
Of duties and tasks

On Earth
A lot of people work very hard
Just to keep civilization afloat
If they didn’t, constantly, everything would collapse

Infinity is very probably similar

Now, these higher beings are out there somewhere
They are not in constant, string-pulling control
Nature can handle things fine most of the time
But when she can’t…

Perhaps it is the responsibility
Of these beings
To make corrections—
To do the right thing

Say an entire galaxy is in danger
Of being destroyed by some mega-disaster
Nature herself has no remedy
Would one not want a team of higher beings to fix it if they could?

An example closer to home would be
The Cold War
That some accident or miscalculation did not occur
Leading to holocaust

Is a miracle
Literally
There must have been several interventions
From on high just to see us through

There’s no other way to explain it

So it would appear
Both that much more powerful species exist
And that they have to continually grease the gears
Of the cosmos as a matter of course

If they didn’t
Wrong and evil would triumph

So, all in all
It has to be assumed
That if a next life presents itself
All that is waiting is hard work—

—At least for most—

And very likely,
Not paradise

Mystic Science Part II

The mystic scientist carries four tools inside his bag
The method: science, the aim: religion, isn’t any gag
But Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, Muslim, Catholic or Jew
That one needn’t be any of those is really quite true

We have loving devotion toward an idol or a God
The motives for this approach could be subtle or flawed
But those whose hearts are pure will find that there is nothing lacking
Love dissolved within itself will send delusion packing

There is also the equipment for soul waking through work
Behind every vocation lie potentials not to shirk
And if we can be unattached to outcomes of our roles
We find true freedom and illumination stamp our souls

But wait! There’s more! We could tread the path of sacred knowledge
And we acknowledge this isn’t the sort found at any college
Wisdom, contemplation—these are the light’s avenues
And we come to know the truth given up by sacred clues

In the end, of course, there is the approach of concentration
The strongest, purest, straightest path to blissful elation
We come to reach the highest state conceivable, indeed
Perhaps for someone other we can duly plant a seed

Real Time

Can it indeed actually be said
That one can understand and accept
How a person can get his head
Around time and not be bereft?

For example, what is the need
For the phenomenon to be dead
Sure, evolution must strive to breed
But what waters of terror we tread

Why, one may ask, is life such a blur?
Strong intention and deed
Unforgiving it is, to death we must demur
One undying whole, and yet we bleed

It would seem then to be apparent
Even though life must endlessly stir
Nay, it would be quite inherent
We’re to be, we are, and we were

So we see there is little to say
It’s impossible to be transparent
And there is really just but one way
To avoid all this talk that is errant

Honesty only allows us to state
(There is only this much to say)
I’m here, it’s now, there’s change—no debate
Else: a guess, a metaphor, nonsense, okay?

Broadway.

We are performing the act of linear time.
It is a parody of thoughts isolated.
A beginning and end to this very rhyme.
We form the discombobulated.

The sensation of understanding.
Is, was and maybe.
Is but the experience of comprehension.
Regardless of the truth we think we see.

Transparency can be found through the looking glass.
One may even see the stage.
The scientists acting Ecclesiasts.
Old scriptures for the modern age.

A guess is closer to truth than fact.
A metaphor means you've been deeper.
A nonsense assumes an absolute intact.
Direction the is no there within ether.

The Personal

Many say our character’s of secondary status
The subconscious psyche the primary apparatus
But what if self and soul come in, and are not automatic
The genes, the neurons aren’t the items that truly begat us

Could we even say that this could be a cosmic principle?
That the personal could be the variable principal?
There are those who feel that we, ourselves, our natures
Are transcendent, what God considers most defensible

So perhaps, psychology and Eastern thinking are askew
When they consider personality no true way through
They see it as brain programming, and quite deterministic
What’s a being at the River Styx to do?

No Self No Soul

Eliminating strife
At the center of the practice
No God, but here the fact is:
There is eternal life

No self, no soul, no God
Some say that this is stark
But with the proper spark
Adherents find naught odd

Think of a karmic candle
One wick lives, one wick dies
Uncounted, constant lives
Might wear the good monk’s sandal

Clinging and attachment
These lead one to suffer
Using meditation as a buffer
The student finds detachment

Compassion the foundation
The bodhicitta key
Countless incarnations he
Views with no reservation

Walk the Middle Way
Bring living beings home
All sentience that roams
Shall be enlightened one day

Shaman’s Blues

Even with your head in the clouds
One acquires, from time immemorial
A dose of the blues, and how the down shrouds
One’s role as the ambassadorial
But you indeed are a master of Fate
And you have not here been given
Any excuse or chance to be riven
From your psychospiritual mandate
Chaos! Chaos among these lines
Battle responsible, batten your mind
And see that your people do not see you
But that is impossible, your mark is the true
So when all the phantoms are hereabout
And a brother or cousin gives up a shout
Do not be frightened, or freaked or macabre
Just send that spirit out
So, in the end, even Shamans get blue
Betray they may not, as a pro
The Devil signs on, but we banish, ‘tis true
We engage above, not below
Gather your herbs, prepare your chant
And you shall find peace here withal
The Spirit world like an elixir of honey
The Shaman’s job is to enthrall

Substantial Answer

The West has been searching, time and again
For a fundamental substance
A smallest piece
Nature to fleece
Obsessed without reluctance

Of course in times long ago past
The atom was this actor
But when we sought
And time forgot
This wasn’t the true factor

For we have quarks! Leptons galore!
Neutrinos, Z bosons, too
So this is confusing
Dear Mother abusing
Our sense in this particle zoo

And not only that, these entities change
Transform from another to one
Relativity here
The picture so queer
The spin of a particle spun

Some world cultures are not interested
In some fundamental piece
For them indeed
The biggest need
To find connections, at least

Transitory stages, events unfolding
Are for some traditions the key
Fundamental change
Phenomenal range
Enable us past illusion to see

An irreducible substance or independent piece
Have no fundamental meaning
Theories of Everything
Common sense burying
And we are free to watch Nature’s redeeming

The West quite obsessed with objects, you see
And we’re not without renown
We search for a part
That will make us all smart
What we’re looking for’s the smallest noun

Keeping the Faith

From time immemorial, there have been a few
Who hold the light for society
This segment of its accord knows what to do
And its is a task of sobriety
And when the whole shebang goes up and it’s through
At least we’ll have had such ones’ piety

This segment is not nor has ever been large
But always it’s been conscientious
They are the turned on but not those in charge
Outside of everything pretentious
Their duty could not be by others discharged
And these ones are nary sententious

Those who hold the light are not ones in power
Perhaps they have art or philosophy
Sometimes they advise at the most crucial hour
But they have no hand in atrocity
Touched in the breast not by wealth, but a flower
They are not at fault for monstrosity

Whenever upon us should fall a dark age
The select will preserve good works
Though the world at times be bereft of the sage
In shadow, the mind of grace lurks
And though man may one day be stripped from the stage
The compassionate tend to the groundwork

Interpreted Worlds

The qualities quantized in querulous quelling
Are such that worlds collide
But to totally terminate terminal telling
Would not the real abide

Determinate dalliance debating to damn
We must have an order of random
Superlative psychonauts secretly slam
The dualist polarized tandem

So really to readily rear from the real
Is not necessarily wise
The fetters of faith fully finally feel
That reality can be our prize

Worlds don’t split, would you want them to wield
An infinite completely crazy?
Doing the deed surely deletes downfield
The multiverse shouldn’t be hazy

Bury it in at being’s blue behest
Then witness divinity’s shoeprint
Ready the racehorse of reason’s request
The infinite merely a blueprint

Knowledge

Knowledge is the goal, the one thing we all seek
Storage in the soul, we are born with the power
Seeking pure control, behind the curtain peek
Pay the highest toll, the effervescent flower

Truly we are born, with all we’ll ever know
Yet we are forlorn, forgetting all with ease
Of every hair we’re shorn, but onward we must go
Often we are torn, but maya is a tease

So in our very being, we possess perfect wisdom
Leaving perfect seeing, there isn’t need for fear
Dreaming of the freeing, a most uncanny system
Irrational fleeing, toward the Light we must steer

In the end we’re pure, and have but to acknowledge
We banish, we are sure, and see past the goal
Possess our only cure, and that is Perfect Knowledge
Immortal spirit you’re, with omniscient Soul

Chinaski

The poem’s a good place to flounder
And ol’ Hammerin’ Hank lived to type
On vodka sevens he might founder
Here’s a poet who got little hype

Raised up during the Depression
Not many friends, no money
Soul and style bloom into session
The opposite sex like honey

But first graduate to adulthood
Cities, rooms too high to count
A difficult life being withstood
The word’s riddles steadily mount

Sending in poems, more rejection
He knew he was good, but no luck
Lesser writers than he gained detection
But for decades Bukowski was stuck

Worked some years at the post office
The drink, the word, women, around
This wasn’t a life that was flawless
But brilliant writing did abound

Once the man got to his fifties
Then came recognition
The typewriter, it hummed quite swiftly
He had paid his dues and then some

With women something of a Don Juan
Not handsome, but boy, interesting
300 hangovers yearly, drawn
Upon the slate, live like a king

Purchase some bourbon, it’s horses
And he had a radical system
Always up for the racecourses
Betting smartly, but often he missed ‘em

We are all inside of a wait room
Swill word and wine in the same breath
To deal with people a dark doom
The whole thing distracts us from death

Desperation

The evil was waiting, the good sage might say
The demon would check with a spike
Evolve from black night into burning bright day
The demon might wreck with a pike

The party all gathered to carry its duty
The mystery given no name
The darkness all set then to harry its booty
The prisoners riven small game

Fortuitously, one of them here was select
Clairaudience, gem in his keeping
Open a gateway, the fear to bisect
Brutalize him in his weeping

Conspiracy of brethren, creatures so wise
If agendas are on, cannot kill you
Hear out the winds for features to prize
Scream on the tides yet still blue

Effect a retreat, the cauldron yawns wide
The Lord has instructed the One
Though he must step back, hither dawns pride
These forces destructed the Sun

And so Desperation a place of the past
The neophytes mete a defeat
In some sense it was a race to the last
The acolytes beat a retreat

Desire

Why do we feel desire?

In the West, it is supposed
That consciousness is epiphenomenal
An accidental capstone
On a deterministic organism

All is supposedly reflexive
And robotic
So consciousness has no causal role
And is like a miniscule, meaningless flame
In an infinite, meaningless darkness

Well

If this is indeed the case
Why is it that we experience, we feel
Desire
And so strongly

If what gives rise to desire
And what responds to desire
Are automatic and unconscious
Why on Earth should we feel anything?

In Nature there are never extraneous variables
So in making us feel desire
Nature is not presenting extra, meaningless features

So perhaps we must examine
Our attitudes about consciousness
(To do which we do not have enough space here)

If we did not feel desire, we could not react to it
And so we see the necessity for a feeling, thinking
Conscious awareness—
Without which desire could not function, or even exist

Organic Circuitry

On high, circuits screaming, some kind of intense dream
Perhaps humans stay a type of model
Cybernetic scheming, thought-forms rip the seam
The present is not the time to dawdle

That levels the question, what’s evolution’s plan?
Does it metaprogram universes—worlds?
Does the ape have a suggestion, indeed, where goeth man?
Into a dimension tightly curled?

Humans sit and subtle burn, and it’s something to see
How does the successor go about this?
We the ordinary spurn, herald something to be
Is there anyone alive who really doubts this?

Humans have tradition, the great rishis of old
The power and audacity transfinite
Philosophy’s whole mission, and mathematics bold
Look over time like thirty cents, all right?

So we really must admit, it is indeed a mystery
Just where all the nonlocal faction’s going
Tradition takes a hit, the organic is just history
Whatever the hell’s the future of knowing?

Why Wait?

If humans are smart, then getting a start
Ought not to have taken so long
The earliest man, he hadn’t a plan
Except not to start doing wrong

The key point, you see, what were we to be?
It seems human nature did not
Contain any telling, it took eons jelling
And no special result was sought

Then civilization, the birth of all nations
Burst along on the new scene
Where did it come from, today we are struck dumb
By what it exactly all means

Man lived for ages, but history’s pages
Didn’t turn until quite great delay
So we’re asking: why wait? What exactly our fate?
Only Mother Earth could quite say

During the Neolithic, there sure were terrific
Advances in all that man did
The Noosphere waking, population size making
Civilization’s takeover bid

Yet there was no progression, that is the question
Stable for long, then exploding
It wasn’t continuous; quite easy, then strenuous
Quite hard to point to an encoding

This all makes no sense, and the scientists wince
Because we existed in situ
Three hundred K years, and a rational fear:
We’ve lived thus ten thousand—an issue!

Past, Present, Future

It is quite the vogue to say
That time ain’t really real
This is not without its sense but
What about how we feel?
If past and future are nothing
What about karma’s wheel?

Or if you are not on that wheel
At least one could suppose
Past and future are just as important
As the present time that knows
And perhaps superfluity
Divorced, and time just flows

So there’s no need stubbornly
To say the present’s all
Past and future exist too
Don’t let all this befall
Indeed if memory’s illusion
What do we recall?

Surely we can transcend time
It is after all a dimension
But since we’re in it most always
We don’t know of its suspension
And given this, we have to say
It quite has our attention

But, indeed, why should the brain
The memories we all know
Indicate an objective past
And future set to show?
Is the world as we know it real?
Old age is apropos!

Memories of the Present

The only moment we remember
Happens habitually here
Next to us in space, time’s ember
Natty Newtonians near

Subjective time has a heartrate
Fair full felicitous fields
Like a voltage coil at the spark-gate
Lilting lovely leptons low-yield

The quantum field generates time
Ticks totally tubular, telling
Would roll were it not for the rime
Carnivorous cadence compelling

Entanglement projects a movie
Spacetime’s surly surrogate sin
Sinful for supposing the spooky
Discontinue the disparate din

What happens in the deepest of realms?
Dissolute depleted dimension
What is it thought overwhelms
In a purely Platonic pretension?

Memory seeming nonlocal
So seriously set at the same?
The future not yet very vocal
A gorgon the Godhead gives game

Anyway, if events are recorded
A frightfully fabulous feat
The apple Adam is awarded
Nifty, nice, noble and neat

Robotic Intent

It is said that humans are machines
That we are deterministic bio-robots
With an accidental, useless consciousness
And a classical orientation

But if our function is in fact purely deterministic
Who is making this determination?
Indeed when you think about it
This makes little sense

For you see, in order to determine
A brain, soul and mind to be deterministic
You are considering a loop:
You are considering a complete system

This system is consistent, self-consistent
So to declare it anything
One needs to take a snapshot
Of the deterministic loop

In order to do this, you need to be
Outside the loop
Remember: we are taking the picture from outside
So what system is this picture a part of?

This picture cannot be part of the same system
Because if it is outside it, it cannot be within it
So in order to understand the whole system
We need to account for the picture

And so the deterministic humanoid
And the picture of that
Are one system—
You cannot have two

Now then
To get the whole picture
We need to take a picture of the system
Along with the picture we have taken of it

But wouldn’t we need a picture
Of the system, and the first picture
And the second picture
To know everything about the system?

Then we would need a third picture
And a fourth and fifth
All the way to infinity
So we see—this is an infinite regress

So how can the human system
Be deterministic
If we cannot ever
Determine it to be such a thing?

So perhaps consciousness
Is not classical
Is not deterministic
But is fundamental

That’s the only way out of the loop

We are not robots
We are intentional beings
With a causally efficacious awareness
That is not in danger of infinite regresses

A system cannot evaluate itself
If one is to examine a coherent system
One must do so from outside
And a finite, deterministic, Newtonian consciousness

Therefore cannot exist

And the miracle is that this consciousness
In existing naturally
Is in some fundamental respect infinite
