21 hour soak bird seed smells funny

I purchased some wbs, strained out all the sunflower seeds and all the floating material. It has been soaking for 21 hours now and has a strange smell like a sweet sour smell, kinda funky.

Why is that? I've read others have let there wbs soak too long, (eg 36 hours!) I've been under the impression 24 hours was fairly normal. Can someone advise me to either a) rinse off and pressure cook now or b) start again soaking for a shorter period of time:)

My friend said hers smelled like yogourt when she soaked it.

Her experience was that 24 hours wasn't long enough, next time she's going to try 30.

She also got cobweb for the first time from WBS.

now i'm even more confused! I read the other post of wbs sour smell nd the guy soaked for 36 hours and that was too long...

It seems to make since that the germs would be easier to kill once they germinate, but hay i've only mastered cakes, and I wanna try bulk so which is it guys? Wait longer or throw them in my pc now?

I would recommend you rinse all that soaked birdseed, then drain it until most of the water has run off. After that your ready to load it into jars\bags, and pc it.


I've always soaked the birdseed for ~12 hours, rinsed, drained and pc'd with a good rate of success. Doesn't it make sense that if it's soaked it will absorb some of the water?

That is what I've heard as well, but I'm going with the soak and pc, come on guys which one, wait longer or pc now or throw out?

It all depends on your brand of WBS. What works for one kind may not be the same for another. Even variation in batches will probably be noted.

Try 24 hours. If they don't like they're colonizing fast enough or too slow, it may be due to inappropriate moisture content.

Trial and error is the way to go with WBS. For and easier grain to start with, try popcorn.

What about teks that use no simmering? For ex: 6T?

Maybe my friend should simmer next time.

Really popcorn is easier? I found it took longer to colonize then brf, did you fine this to be so? (I've been told wbs colonizes fairly fast, like rye, any truth to this?)

I've done WBS a couple times. I rinse, soak 24hrs w/ a little h2o2, rinse, drain, PC. Never had any contam problems. This last time i thought they had too much water, so i didnt use them, just left them in the box after i pressure cooked. 2 weeks later i was going to throw them out (finally) but they had no growth, and looked like they had the perfect water content, so i inoc'd with Pink Buff, and they are growing fine. Who woulda thought.

If you skip the simmering you'll be just fine. it's up to you though, Whenever I soak I never simmer and have always ended up with a shakable substrate with proper water content. I'm pretty sure soaking kills 2 birds with one stone; hatches endospores and causes the grain to absorb the correct amount of moisture. I could be wrong but it's always worked for me.

No, simmering adds water content to grain. pc'ing is where it gets sterilized

Well there almost done simmering, so wether by simmering wbs was overkill or not, I'll never know. If it works fine and I get no contams then I'll stick with that method.

Done simmering and there in the pc now, thanks guys for all the help:)

yeh I Simmered .>after 26 hous soak..and its been 3 dayz ..and i got spotty mycelium.so tonight im gonna do it ith out the simmer..i use wagners wbs. its also possible to simmer then drain to pc...with out soakin.

ive noticed the same shit but i soaked it over night left my extra bird seed that i didnt need into a trash bag. When i came back about a month later that shit was all white and colinized without even using spores
