I find birdseed to be way too difficult to get the right water content. I've tried several times/methods and it always comes out too wet/clumpy.

I recommend using rye berries instead.

2-3 cc's of spore water should do a quart fine.

You'll need 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart to spawn 1/2 cubic foot of substrate in a decent amount of time.

You could spawn 5 cubic feet with a teaspoon of colonized rye, but it would take a couple of months to colonize.

TM, you da man, but....................

If you have a mind to..............Try just soaking bulk bird seed 12 - 18 -24 hours, rinse well & drain (10 - 15 minutes). Load jars & PC. It will not be too dry. If you think it might still be to wet, nuke 5 / 6 jars at a time for a few minutes & steam out some of the moisture.

Try some w/nuke & without all from the same soak.

Works every time for the Raccoon. The Raccoon gets the mixed white, red - millet & milo (with a about 1 % sunflower seeds & a minute amount of crushed corn) BS in 40 pound bags at Petco for about $7 bucks.

The Raccoon tried straight white millet & it always seems to dry doing it this way. They seem to have a natural waxy coating & don't seem to take on water as quickly as the mixed bag stuff.

No... U dah man!

Maybe someday Six, but for now rye does me fine. I have three 5 pound bags of "Azure Farm" organic rye berries and that should last me quite a while!

Ya gotta go with what you know and trust, and for me that's rye, it's quick and easy, colonizes in 9-14 days and spawns compost like nobody's business!

I tried BS and failed, like I said and I'll probably try it again just for the hell of it, but each of us has his/her preferences and rye is my baby for now.

Thanks for the tips on the BS, I've read your tek before and I'lll use it when I try again.

Birdseed isint that hard at all. If you pretty much just let it soak over night like for 24 hours, then it should have enough water right there. I add 10 cc's of water to it anyway and it still comes out fine. Lately though it looks like the bottom of my jars are still kind of wet so I will cut it back to 5 cc's or maby none.

Yeah, Birdseed is ok once you get used to it, but you feel more confident with Rye then do rye!....No big deal:).....umm......If you have a huge bag of birdseed anyway and want to use it up, follow that soaking method thats all, youll do good....ask lots of questions no matter how pissed of people might get, alot off people love to help out!

Adding some brown rice flour to the bird seed after it has soaked up the water will give the seed a good boost as well. bluhoney

The new kid on the block is Brown Rice Syrup BRS (it's cheap & found at lots of Asian grocery stores). Adding a 1/4 or half cup to a big batch of bird seed soak realy seems to speed up colonization. BRS is mostly complex carb's & maltose derived from brown rice. I tried it & liked it. SixTango
