Anyone have any exotic or TAT genes? Looking for interesting projects. I have Natalensis T2 and T3 plates and Makilla Gorilla and SNAPER germ and T1 plates to trade.

So just a heads up that these really do seem to be heat sensitive in extreme places. Of the 8 test samples, only 2 ever recovered. The same two recovered when I placed the whole wedge on fresh plates, so that seems pretty definitive for the extreme test of basically three days hitting 110f.

To add some more data, I also received 6 wedges from another wonderful member. They were supposed to be picked up from the mail box within an hour of delivery, but I found out later that they didn't come in until the next morning. So they did sit in the hot mailbox for one very hot afternoon. Not one of these has recovered on fresh plates either.:frown:

Still think this is a great method for sending easy. But keep extreme weather conditions in mind and maybe wait it out. Contam doesn't seem to be an issue, but heat can be if you live in hell's fever dream.

I knew it.

Like you said though, still the preferred way to ship genetics IMO. Far superior to prints. It just has its limits as with anything else.

The post office wanted to hang out with Yolanda for an extra week. But we are together at last.

The sample took a beating, but I can work with this.

been doing this for a while too after reading a 20 year old post from RR describing it. I recently put some 9 month old wedges back to agar. 4/5 recovered but with significant delay, 7-14 days. not exactly vigorous but there we go.

I tend to put them in foil pouches inside the ziplock bag nowadays to avoid the problems with getting the damn things out. a rotary cutter is very useful for cutting foil off the roll.

Just want to add my current experience receiving wedges in the mail using this method. I received a wedge and transferred onto agar 48 hours ago. Psilocybe Allenii is starting to take off. It's been severely cold where these plates have been stored as well so this is in spite of extremely low temperatures.

I have juat flipped the baggies inside out and touched it to a plate. Not ideal, I should have thought of swab, duh. But it seems to have worked!

That's actually not a bad idea, as it can be a bitch sometimes.

I encourage any one who's sending "Water Agar" wedges in baggies, to make their plates on the higer% side of agar and thicker.

And pack enough material to account for the inevitable fling/flop/flick/fall off before it gets to the receiving plate (YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!).

This is more important in little vials. Not sending just 1 lonely wedge.

The anxiety itself is enough to cause it go anywhere except ON agar.

I can confirm that the Beef-style method of shipping works! I got 2 lovely microscopy samples in wee baggies from a giveaway this week, with some index cards around it, and everything looked great upon arrival. The samples have been transferred, with plenty of flicking/falling/flerping going on in the SAB.

These broke my sample-sent-in-the-mail cherry   I hope I didn't frig it up too badly.

As long as you didn't put those flerps to agar you should be good.

But never (unless absolutely desperate) pick the ones that fell, back up to use.

Welllllll... I may have put a tiny bit on agar that fell onto the wire racks I have in the bottom of my SAB. Lesson post-learned I guess. And the dropped bit is over to one side of that plate, it will be a good test of my cleaning skills when it's time to transfer again.

I had a Rusty Whyte wedge shipped this way to me, but then I had to move across the country.

Put it to agar 3-4 months later (it was basically just a crispy chip at this point)

Took about 7 days but it took off no problem!

Def love this method πŸ‘

Sporeless GT, freshly relocated from a smash wedge, transferred ~24h prior. Water agar. Great way to go, Beef. Thanks for introducing me to this - and for that kickin' culture!
