Forgive me if this has been asked.. What is the top layer you’re using? Is any of that brown top layer mixed into your chips?

How long does it take for cyans to fruit? I have started a 100L bucket and it's just finishing winter now. Will I get fruit in autumn if I water well?

They fruit when conditions are right

I like to make patches in the spring or top off old ones, then water them periodically throughout the year until fall when the rains start.  Most of the time they will fruit.  If you top them off with chips mid or late summer, they might skip fruiting because they're busy colonizing new feed.

Just a few handfuls of recycled potting mix and forest debris. Nothing thick and not mixed into the chips. It works it's way down with watering but more debris falls from the bushes and trees onto them so there's always a really thin layer and stuff getting mixed in with watering. The main thing is not to block air. They can still penetrate a decent layer, but I don't push my luck. Had a few suffocate before as well as getting over watered so definitely get used to the pot weight. Both dry and wet. And keep top layers thin.

Harvested the last of the subaeruginosa last night. They were dropping spores so I threw about 8-10 caps on foil.

The bluing is pretty intense. They already feel dark.

And the chips you're using? Alder wood?
Thanks

2023-2025 has been about 80-90% Italian Plumb with the remainder a mix of Alder, Fir and Grapewood. Normally the mix is dominantly Alder and Fir but I knocked the Italian Plumb back and have about another 3 years of supply lol.

Thanks! Do you mean Italian Plum or plumb? Would something like this work? https://www.napoleon.com/en/it/barbecues/products/accessories/charcoal-smoker-accessories/plum-wood-chips-67016

And you start your pots with fermented chips that are then sterilized and inoculated with cultured grain? I haven’t been able to find a firm answer on the reason fermented chips are used.

Should work fine. Most hardwoods are great. Avoid Madrona and Cedar for sure.

Psilocybe allenii new pot from March. Made with a handful of chips from 23/24's pot.. which is pinning now and has been for a while. But no screen on that one so pests are slowing the flow.

I can't answer for TCO. But you don't sterilise fermented chips. They can be used as is. There would be no point to ferment first and then sterilise anyway. You can go straight to fermented chips fr9m grains. There are many ways to skin a cat. Some will take their grains to sterile chips first and then expand to more fermented chips. Others may go straight to fermented and if you feel bold ypu may go directly to untreated chips.

There's a number of reasons to use fermented chips.
1. It seems that woodlovers fruit better off of fermented chips than off sterile chips (anecdotal)
2. If you want to do many pots or a large patch then it becomes a menace to sterilise all those chips. Just fermenting under water is much more economical.

:whathesaid:

I always hated fermented, because of the smell, but just filling up a few buckets and ignoring them is so much easier than sterilizing PC loads of chips.

And some more cyans.

Oh yeah and an observation. I have a cyanescens bed in my parents' yard, it has been one of my best producers. It's a clone that fruited first in, I guess, 2022. With this year being exceptionally dry, my mother dutifully watered the thing the entire summer.

When I saw the state the 'forest' beds were in, about a month ago, I was relieved that at least there was one bed that had been taken care of. Now guess what. The forest beds are producing and the bed at my parents' place is nearly dead.

I was thinking the same thing regarding sterilized fermented chips. Seemed silly. Thank you for confirming.. I think what I may do is combine Stipe n Caps recommendation for grain > hwfp (Lipa’s tek) and use that to jump to fermented chips… or maybe just hydrated! Thanks for answering my questions guys. You rock!

:whathesaid:

I dropped that last post and didn't look back.
Those are fermented chips. The 4 gallon pots fit nicely into 5 gallon buckets so I don't even have to take the chips out of the pot to ferment. Just slide the pot in and top with hardware cloth and a weight to keep the chips from floating. After 2 weeks remove and let it drain for a few weeks.

I'd use grain spawn if I were to do some large patches and trying to cover area but it doesn't take much of anything to start a pot. It's better for me to avoid some pests and go agar to sterile chips indoors. It can be a bit slower than grain but I'm never in a hurry.

Psilocybe gandalfiana agar to chips

Psilocybe gandalfiana agar to chips

That's enough to easily spawn to four of the 4 gallon pots. Could probably stretch it to eight. I've also had a lot of luck just throwing a whole agar plate in the middle of the pot so even this step can be bypassed. The subaeruginosa I've been posting were done that way.
