You're right... but Americans by-and-large support every bit of the New Deal, and they get upset when government even discusses undoing things like social security, medicaid, unemployment benefits, etc...

On policy alone... a Bernie Sanders type candidate, but with a bit more charisma.. would win in a fucking landslide as long as he didn't say things like "Democratic Socialism"...

Trump only won because there wasn't really any alternative provided... he didn't win because his ideals are more popular. Certainly a candidate who ran on "New Deal" type policy positions woulda crushed him.

I think a big part of the problem is that, while both sides are incredibly stupid, the right has harnessed the stupidity of the constituency and turned it into an asset, whereas, for the left, the stupidity is still very much a liability.
