Amazing thread. Thank you. I'm very upset at the amount of mushrooms I've wasted making tea. I believed the 99% extraction bs. Back to making smoothies I guess. Yuck.

Tea always hit me pretty hard.

Even if it's not getting all of the actives out I imagine it's a lot more bioavailable from water then from dried mushrooms, which we don't really have the enzymes to break down properly.

That said, this thread has encouraged me to experiment more with cooking mushrooms into my food.  The come up is much slower like that, which as I'm getting older I actually prefer.  And because they're cooked the chitin is broken down in the cooking process, making them easier to digest and likely more bioavailable.

Of course, cooking works better with fresh mushrooms which isn't very convenient.

I like making tea, but I'm having trouble following the results.

Would someone be so kind as to ELI5 for me?

So far the results seem to show that steeping the tea is the most effective method of extracting the actives into water.
Also it shows that doing multiple steeps with the same dregs in new water each time continues to draw actives out of the dregs, but less each time.
After three steeps or boils, some actives were still remaining in the dregs. So it appears that you will never get all of the actives out by steeping or boiling. Or at least it will take a lot of boiling.
You can combine the teas made in each round to get the most out of your tea, however this end up being a large volume of water.
You can simmer, heat evaporate or dehydrate the resulting tea in a dehydrator after separating it from the dregs to get a potent tea or dry crusty material.

I am about to complete some new potency tests with an experiment to determine if using greater volumes of water are in each heat cycle is effective for potent tea.
More on that shortly.

It would have to be the case right? More solvent= more material to dissolve the actives in.

Funny you should ask. That was my conundrum and this is what I came up with.

Now I need to go scrape a bunch of petri, holy grail and condiment cups to get a final weight so I can publish the result of this round of testing.

Yup, in hindsight in makes sense. But making sense is not the same a corroborating data. Which leads to the post to follow.

TBH I'm surprised by how much change was observed. Saturation of the solution can be a problem but with how much water is used relative to actives I wold not have expected that to be a significant factor. I'm still wondering if there's some other, more mysterious, mechanism in play.

I imagine it is extracting a lot more than just psilocybin.

So the water is hitting saturation with stuff like beta glucans etc.

I'm curious if very potent mushrooms like cyans, which have less dry mass to worry about, and thus less non-active material being extracted, would return much different results.

NEVER using petri dishes to dehydrate tea again. Condiment cups ftw. Just spent 2.5 hours chipping dried tea out of plates and didn't even get it all.

Okay, My results are flawed so I won't spend a lot of time on this post and will revisit the test and track some things better.

Thinking that I cracked the tea code I came up with the idea of a super hot soak that doesn't reduce the quantity of water. A pressure cooker. And I have a lot of myceliated grain laying around so figured this would be a good test. It really wasn't ideal because I didn't get a good starting reference potency and and TreeFrog just mentioned, the grains have a lot of extra sticky goo that gets extracted into the tea along with the actives.

It worked well enough, and I reserved samples of each decoction to test for potency as well as some of the grain after the final cycle. All of the dehydrated tea came out potent, but that doesn't tell us much because I should have kept each run of tea separate so I could get a final dry weight of each decoction of tea.

So I have some data, but without the corresponding weights to multiply the potency by, it doesn't help with comparing anything. What I didn't take into account is that with later batches there would be a higher ratio of water to extract, so once all of the water was evaporated off each decoction probably resulted in a smaller batch of dehydrated tea. So back to the drawing board.

Fortunately, I have several tubs pinning now, including some pans.

Pointless pictures:

Starting at the end, here are the resulting potency results and the final weight and product. Can probably make some potent gummies with that.

I will add more when I rerun this test using what I learned this time.

Thank you very much for explaining.

I typically boil my mushrooms for tea. I'll try steeping it next time.

Cheers!

Oh the PC is an interesting idea. Would be fun if it is effective. But if steeping is better than boiling, wouldn’t PC be worse than boiling? Looking forward to more tests.

On my list of experiments to try is making tea in my PC and replace the rocker with silicone tubing that leads to copper tubing to catch and condense the steam. (A still) Just curious

If heat is the cause for less transfer of actives, the PC is a bad choice. If my suspicion is true and the reduction in water from boiling is the reason that boiling is less effective than steeping, then the added heat without allowing any water to escape through evaporation should be more effective for transferring the actives to water. That will be easy to compare in the next round.

I believe that the steam and water evaporated from the tea is pretty pure so it shouldn't contain any actives. This is partially based on the clear condensation on the lid of the PC when opened and the fact that the dried tea that remains after dehydration is very active.

The way a still works is by condensing the more volatile fluids that evaporate at a lower temperature by controlling the heat applied to the liquid base. I do not know the boiling temperature of the actives but I believe that they are much higher than water. So the water should evaporate out leaving the actives behind. That is how we get distilled water from dirty or salt water. My source on that is that I ran the distillation units making all of the drinking water and pure water for the steam engines from sea water on an air craft carrier.

Not to dissuade your from any tests, but my prediction is that the condensate will be fairly pure water.

So to be clear, if im making tea this week, the evidence is that I should get the water boiling first, And then add the shrooms, let it simmer for a bit and then remove from heat entirely and let sit in water a combined 10-15 minutes?

1. Get water to boil
2. Add shrooms once water is boiling, let sit for ... 30 seconds while still boiling?
3. Then remove from heat, let sit for total of 10-15 mins.
4. Drain liquid into cup, then take dregs, add more water again and repeat process

Like so...?

And this will produce more potent cups than putting the shrooms in the water right away and letting it heat up along with the water until it boils?

I let the mush heat up in the water and then took it off after it was boiling for the steeps. That worked fine.

My belief is that the only problem with letting it boil is the loss of water. More water leads to better transfer. So in theory, if you start with more water and boil it down to the same amount as the finished steeped tea you should get at least as good as just steeping. But that hasn't been tested yet.

So based solely on the data so far, yes. Steep, strain, and use the dregs to steep some more.

I will keep testing and come up with the definitive best method. But each test I have done has answered some things while leading to more questions.

One tip I haven't mentioned yet is that I got a french press and it is by far the easiest way to extract the maximum tea from the dregs.
