Maybe dehydrate them and grind them and capsule-ize the dregs?

So if i'm reading this correctly, the best method of consumption is:

1 Boil water
2 Remove from heat, shortly after add shrooms to hot water
3 leave to steep for 15 minutes. Squeeze the liquids out of the dregs
4 Strain dregs and consume tea

If concerned about lost actives, one could also eat the dregs or just boil more water and steep shrooms again (but the amount of actives left is negligible?)

Thanks!

I've been meaning to post a tek about this, but I've just got my grow set up again and don't have access to any mush for another month or so-

But you can absolutely turn tea into sugar/syrup and retain the actives-  The benefit of doing so is that you can then take that syrup and add it to chocolate and make legit tempered chocolate bars without any pieces of mushroom in there. They're epic. The trick is heating the sugar/tea to the exact right temperature to avoid having the sugar go too hard into hard-crack phase- You want somewhere in the vicinity of soft-ball inorder to still have the syrup mix into the chocolate-mix without adding too much moisture to the tempering to sieze. If anyone wants more info, DM me and I'll pull out my notebook somewhere- it's been about a year since I made them last so I'm fuzzy on the exact details.

But it does work.

And,  it's also a great way to store tea at room temp for a while with minimal loss of potency* (I only have a few tests under my belt here with out the greatest controls as I was doing it as proof of concept at the time so take that claim with a grain of salt)- Can basically make psilocybin syrup and put it in a dropper bottle- great way to dose and it tastes delicious.

This kind of data is amazing. It's great to see quantitative science like this being done.

I'd like to add my voice to the group interested in citric acid in the extraction because this started from gummy discussion and it's an ingredient that's going in at one time or another in that use case. I can easily imagine that it could contribute to the process to do more good than harm, and the anecdotal evidence has lot of positive things to say about citric acid.

Here's a thread with a lot of good information about lemon teks.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27725108

My suspicion is that lemon tek will not improve the extraction, as psilocin is less soluble in water than psilocybin.

https://www.swgdrug.org/Monographs/PSILOCIN.pdf

Anecdotal evidence of increased potency from lemon teks is based on dephosphorylation.  In other words, because psilocin is the active metabolite, the acid treated tea will have a much more rapid onset of effects, increasing blood plasma concentration during the peak.

In researching this post, I discovered that deionized water (or distilled if that is not available) is a superior solvent to tap water.

That's some great info on acidity I hadn't found in my explorations yet. Thanks for sharing.

I'm still curious if there's something that would show up on the style of tests here that would provide hints toward how the small amounts of acid used in the teks here are behaving. The psyclocin conversion is almost certainly a large part of the observed difference but it the only significant contributing factor?

The heads up about distilled water is also going to be useful when I get my ingredients together. My water is hard and I always wonder if that's a problem for sensitive applications so I'm happy to have that question settled.

...

I really don’t understand why the steep ended up more potent. Both the simmer and steep were treated exactly the same with three decoctions. The increase in mush mass and water volume should have reduced any variance. In fact, one step that I didn’t mention was that I measured out the powder for each in alternating two gram piles. I figured that would eliminate any chance of one sample being more potent than the other.

It seems weird that no potency is lost in the simmer to reduce the tea, but some seems to be lost in the simmer for extraction. It doesn’t appear to be reabsorbed by the dregs or that would have shown on the dregs results. The simmer dregs were more active, but not enough to account for the difference in tea potency.

So I cannot answer the why, only what the results are.

...

So I have come up with a possible explanation for the higher potency in the steep tea versus the simmer tea. It goes back to the question about the volume of water. My thinking is that the simmer is losing water to evaporation much more quickly than the steep. The reduced water in the simmer tea reaches the saturation point sooner than the steep because of this reduced volume and becomes less efficient as a solvent. So less of the soluble actives are extracted in the simmer due to less water.

Looking at the chart again:

In the first columns under 1 and 3 for the first and third extractions the steep is a little lower in potency than the simmer. But what I did not take into account is that the volume in each case is about double for the steep in both of these results. So when halving the simmer results or doubling the steep results it clearly indicates that more actives were extracted in the steep. If my theory about the reduced volume of water during extraction causing the tea to reach saturation sooner is correct, then the results do make sense for both this test and the ones in the previous experiment. The tiny volumes of water in the cryovials will have reached saturation very quickly in the previous tests which explains those dubiously inconclusive results.

So I do not believe that the simmer harms or reduces the actives in the tea extraction, however, the reduction in volume of the solvent does reduce the efficiency of the extraction. This actually does align with many of the results that I have had with tea extractions. Lower ratios of water to mushroom or mycelium always results in weaker gummies. So either keep adding water during the extraction or do multiple steeps. Multiple steeps will be more efficient for extraction but will require additional reduction for the greater volume of resulting tea.

I have not thought of how I will confirm the theory, but the results remain unchanged whether this is the correct reason or not. So if you see holes, poke away. I will continue to work with teas in search of improvements in potency and welcome any contributions.

Very interesting hypothesis. Does this mean that possibly, the extraction process needs enough solvent to extract (like dissolving sugar in water before it becomes supersaturated), and then once the extraction is complete, it’s fine to simmer to reduce water volume? (Like simmering syrup to concentrate the sugar in it)? What does “keep adding water” mean in practice exactly? I wonder what ratio of water to mushrooms is “safe” for best efficiency?

Some thoughts on saturation.

The simmer could be pulling other stuff out, which would saturate the water faster.

One way to test would be to use very potent mushrooms like cyans, as they would have less other substances potentially interfering with extracting.

If cyans simmered produces the same potency as steeped (once evaporation is accounted for), it might give us a clue as to why previous runs showed variance.

I believe that once you have whatever you are going to extract into the tea, it is safe to reduce it by simmer or evaporation. I suppose that we could test for that by weighing a tea before and after reduction and measure the difference after accounting for the change in volume. Per my hypothesis, the quantity of actives should remain the same before and after the reduction of a clear tea.

By "keep adding water" I was saying that if you did want to do simmer, that you should not let the water level drop. So add water during the simmers to maintain the volume. I don't see any advantage over just steeping, though.

I would think that we could plot the results of many tests at different volumes of water to determine the most efficient ratio of water to mush. But I don't think I will be able to justify that expense, unless we can go commercial with all of this.

I like your reasoning on saturation Rev. While reading it the idea of heat, related to the speed of a reaction, came to mind. Usually heat is used to increase the rate of a reaction. What if you soaked your mush powder in room temp dH2O for a couple days? If the extraction worked, it'd make it easier to test the concept of saturation related to volume without any extra math steps.

I'm still curious about adding citric or other acids to the extraction phase of the process. Maybe one could use calcium hydroxide to neutralize the acid before testing the solution?

Cold brew tea would be an interesting experiment, if only to see exactly when moisture degradation starts and how long it takes.

So many testing kits, so little return on profit, at least until we start that Shroomery co-op

Thanks guys. I am going to stop quoting for expediency. I appreciate the enthusiasm. I am a total nerd and am grateful to have a place where others are interested in the things that I do.

The room temperature and cold brew ideas are great. That way we eliminate some more variables. However, adding time to the process also increases another variable, so it is just a matter of tests and time. Both are precious, so it will continue to be a game of prioritizing.

After some researching, I don't think that using the acid will affect the tests like I first thought. So I will get to those tests as soon as I can work them in. I would like to get some closure on this phase first. Once I have something that I am happy with to call a control I will use that to test acid extractions.
