My daughter wasn’t feeling well 🤒 today so I stayed home from work to take care of her. Figured I might as well do a science 🧫 I’ve got some overgrown mycelium and pins on other plates that are in desperate need of a transfer.

Contam and hurricane hiccups squashed my hopes of having a fruit harvest by Hollow's  eve. Agar really just moving to rye spawn jars now. But growth is solid and smooth sailing for an early November trip.

I wonder how many shroom heads who've never grown them would believe it if you said "This is how shrooms are grown."

More than zero, I bet.

Pic tax, some x7x+ germination plates.

My buddy saw a partially colonized grain bag. I told him Im growing mushrooms. He said yeah right, you messed up it looks moldy.

So Id believe it's more than zero but less than half lol.

I wonder if the cymatical frequency induced 3D agar\gum media would actually help to trap any competing organisms, and give the myc happy little valleys to jump over to escape.  Could actually prove to be a useful tek.

Who knows? If the agar doesn't skim over and crack, and sets up with smooth waveform patterns..

Maybe the water contained inside might end up being "structured" in such a way it somehow resonates along with how the mycelieum grows. Maybe it can be infused with "magical healing frequencies", lol.

I've seen some amazing plate pics on here, where the culture already grows out on a 2d surface as if it is being influenced by some unseen sacred geometrical force of nature. Beautiful growth patterns, that already resemble natural cymatic like patterns, without even being manipulated with man made technologies..

I haven't seen anyone attempt it, so i'm really curious. No one can say it won't work. I already started constructing a powerful tactile sonic transducer/driver from a 12" subwoofer into a chladni plate, and will be trying it out soon. I'll get some real petri dishes to test with. Suppose I could try to cool it off better under filtered laminar flow, If I must open the vessels.

If I can't manipulate the media surface into form very well, and end up making a mess.. I'll still try monkeying around some more, and see if the various generated tones will alter the actual mycelium itself over time, and influence how it grows out on the plates.. Maybe even set a MSS on the platter, and it will force the millions of spores in the solution to break up and organize them all into different genotypes or something. Make the good ones float to the top near the needle. I have higher frequency transducers as well, much higher than a subwoofer can go, for those higher ultrasonic vibes we can't even hear.

The woofer has been deconstructed in a way that it won't really output any soundwaves, and acts more like a bass shaker without the cone or diaphragm. Basically just a rod directly hooked to the voice coil. Then will be ran through a small amplifier with a tone generator app. I wouldn't think it would create enough air turbulence to alter the laminar HEPA flow, or cause open air currents to suck into the petri containers if they are sealed. I could be so wrong though. :stoned:

Hi everyone,

Is this plate ok or am I looking at some hidden contam?

Same plate on both images. I'm referring to the sort of tiger stripes the myc formed.
The plate is otherwise looking completely clean, others from the batch too. Couldn't identify any bacterial or fungal contam. This is the only sign I see of something potentially going wrong here.
The plate is MEA 1.5%

Do you guys PC your scalpels before each usage?

My last round of plates ended up with bacteria, and based off of the growth pattern I think it came from a tapping motion I did to get the agar off the blade.

I heat my blade to red hot, but obviously not the handle. I just sanitize it.

Also, what tips does everyone have about getting a wedge positioned in the middle of the plate?

My wedges melt to the blade and are difficult to precisely place. I've tried stabbing the plate in the position I want, tapping the handle to loosen it, tweezers. All seem to have their own problems.

Any advice is appreciated.

You need to cool your blade in the empty plate first. Nothing should be melting to your blade.

I try to stab in the side of it but doesn't always work sometimes I can stab into the new agar and lean the blade over a little as I pull it back.

First attempt at agar. Had a little guy growing in the grain jar. So I transferred in the SAB to a small cup of agar.

I would but I saved some in a cryo vial and then dropped the rest into grain.

We will see what fruits it produces I suppose.

APE SN second transfer from 4 year old slant

Hello guys!

I've got some agar questions and I'm hoping someone could help me

First, 2 of my old plates started developing this 3D white fluff in some spots (blue circles), I know it's probably some contam but I just find it weird it took 3-4 weeks for the fluff to start developing. The ugliest one is my first culture from an MS GT syringe and the other is a T1.

Another question, is it normal for cultures to start changing after colonizing the whole plate? The last time I asked here my cultures were described as super wispy, weak and tomentose. 0 rhizo growth at all. But as in the orange circle, after filling everything this thicker strands started appearing. And some of my T2 plates are also showing this thicker dots or strands. Any idea of what's happening to them?

And finally, I already took transfer from all of this T3s, but still wanted to ask the experts , which of these 3 look better or more promising? 1, 2 or 3? I might take another transfer from whichever you guys like more just in case

Thank you all for your help!!

This label maker is awesome! Phomemo D30.  Tons of options, was handwriting on thermal labels (doesnt work well) or using an antiquated label maker (its not even 'smart'!) to do it. Thanks for the reccomendation!
