are you wondering which one to get.

I suggest the Plextor PX-708A...its the highest rated DVD burner in the 8X category.

Now you can also go to the new 12X ones, but they really only burn at one format at 12X...better to wait till better 12X's come out.

Also, sony has the new duel layer burners starting to come out, those are sweet. But again, they are new and you could wait till better ones come out.

This was assuming you were talking about a DVD burner for your computer and not a stand alone one for your TV....

I have the PX-708A but I don't like it. I got it mostly because of the Plextor brand name and I didn't do enough research first. It doesn't let you modify the booktype field which means the discs it burns are incompatible with older readers. DVD+/-RWs have the same reflectivity as regular DVD9 discs so there's no reason they shouldn't work except the reader sees a booktype it doesn't recognize. They also have no plans to update their BIOS with dual layer support even though a bunch of their competitors are going to do so. I never thought I'd say it but stay away from Plextor, I've been very disappointed.

I bought a memorex 8X from newegg.com. Overall, newegg has the best prices of anyone I've found. They also have customer ratings/reviews for individual items which can be very helpful when deciding what you want.

DUAL LAYER BABY!

that's some nextgen shit right there...

twice as much storage as a regular DVD.

though, not many folks are manufacturing the DL discs as of yet.

still, it's under $80, does 8x DVD-/+R and has equally high CD
burning speeds....good read speeds too.

I've been drooling over that drive for some time....

yeah, what evolving said too.

You usually need to SCSI emulate any kind of burner, but it shouldn't be too hard to configure.(Most distros do it right out of the box on install.)

You'll love burning on Linux. You can do 90 things at once and you still won't burn any coasters.

the plextor is only like 115 on buy.com...I've heard a lot of good things about it, but if you wanna do what Ythan wants to, then maybe its not the best choice.

Just get the ND2500A at newegg for $60 (beige) - $70 (black/silver) shipped, or the ND2510A Double Layer burner for $80 shipped at newegg. Both are 8X DVD+/-RW burners.

Mine have been working flawlessly for me. You can hack the firmware from the ND2500A for free, the architectures between the NEC ND-2500A and NEC ND-2510A are the same, just different firmware. Marketing ploy, in my opinion.

With computer hardware, the trick is to save money since the prices will be constantly dropping as new technology comes out (unyeildingly). This week alone I have spent over $600 on hardware (yes, I'm a HUGE hardware geek and consumer whore). If I had just bought anything without any bargain hunting and based my decisions solely on a few recommendations and reviews, I would have easily spent over $1000. I wouldn't spend $120 on a Plextor. My ND2500A has given me no coasters on Ritek G04's.

Remember, "if you paid retail, you paid too much."

Your neighborhood bargain shopper,
daba

Yes. There have been various success stories regarding the ND-2500A with different firmware to burn DL. Google it.

However, this does not apply to all DVD SL burners because some of their double layer counterparts have different architecture. This is not the case with the NEC ND-2500A/2510A.

Turdy:

Buy an internal DVD burner, and put it in an external enclosure. You'll save some money, and have a plethora of 5.25'' enclosures to choose from.
