New forevercake theory.
    #2888306 - 07/14/04 03:23 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I was really wanting to do this experiment and if it worked claim all the glory myself, but It looks like I will be unable to grow any mushrooms for a good while so here's my idea in case anyone wants to give it a shot.

Undiluted honey will not contaminate. Diluted honey will. Therefore if you drill a hole (or holes) into a cake (or casing) and fill them with honey the mycelium may be able to absorb the honey and dilute it down to digestible concentrations deep within the cake/casing where no other organisms will have a chance to contaminate it.

Additional moisture would of course also need to be furnished by any of the rehydration methods (inner reservoir, dunking, straws, etc...) I was thinking of using a second hole which would be filled with peroxidated water, much like the inner reservoir method, except without filling the hole with vermiculite.

If it works, it may be a way to regurlarly get 5, 6, 7, 8, ... 20? flushes from every cake/casing.

Well, I hate to be doubtful this will work but...

Honey is mostly sugars and carbohydrates. I don't think it contains any complex carbohydrates (or fiber). I also question the protein content as being adequate. Like malt agar, mushrooms will form but are generally lacking as compared to pins formed on supplemented agar mixes.

While I have no doubt this could improve yields, I don't think it would make a perpetual substrate...

I thought the fungus fed overwhelmingly on simple carbohydrates.

Yes, but more is required for the proper development of mushrooms than sugars and carbohydrates. A healthy diet means well developed mushrooms, just like the human body. If certain elements are in short supply, health will decline...

I chose honey partly because of it's nutritional value. Honey's biggest deficiency seems to be it's protein content.
