Increasing a cool-mists reservoir, any ideas?
    #5359018 - 03/02/06 07:12 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

The most demanding part of my FC is refilling the cool-mist's reservoir. I need to refill every other day. This means I can't be gone for any longer then overnight while I have trays in the fruiting chamber. I have had my cool-mist dry out before, along with my casings.

So I'm wondering if anyone has a way of increasing the size or the reservoir. Or perhaps thought of a way to have it automatically refill. I've had a couple Idea's so far. I'm not quite sure how to implement them tho.

1- I guess I could use a different base for the cool-mist, a large bucket perhaps and modify it. Some kind of tube would have to be connected to the bottom of the impeller to increase it's length so that it could suck from a greater depth.
The problem I have with this is, I don't know if the cool-mist will operate properly with the suction end of the impeller extended.

2- If I used one of the large bottles from a water cooler and then used a small hose to siphon water into the cool-mist, with the other end of the hose inside the base of the cool-mist sitting about two inches off the bottom. Once the water level raised up to touch the hose would the water then stop flowing? And once the water level drops would it start flowing again? I need to test the physics of this. If the water kept flowing that would NOT be good.

3- If I used one of those automatic shut offs like you see on top of the ultrasonic foggers. I think I could wire it in such a way that it would cause a small fish tank water pump to turn ON once the water level dropped to a certain point. Then turn OFF once it raised above that point. This would be the most complex but most likely reliable system. The other ones just seem TOO easy.

The #2 option is what I use. I use one of those cheap Reli-on cool-mists from Wal-****. I had the same problem, since I'm away from my grow for days at a time. I just took a 5 gallon bucket, siliconed a hose into the bottom, ran it into the top of my reservoir. I wondered the same thing you did, "Will the water stop flowing when the level reaches the hose?" The answer was no. I came back 2 days later to water all over my basement floor. It's the siphon effect, as long as the water in the vessel you're siphoning from is higher than the reservoir your siphoning to, the water will continue to flow. I had water pouring out of my filter when the reservoir was full. I just put a kink in my hose and clamped it with a clothespin so the water just dripped in at a steady rate, put a mark on my reservoir with a marker and checked it a few hours later and made a couple of minor adjustments so the water level stays the same. It now works great, and lasts for 5 or 6 days without touching it. I just dump a few gallons in it when I check on my grow, add a little H2O2 to prevent contams, and harvest every other week. Hope this helps.

I too, got tired of filling & refilling coolmists.
Plus, fact that hose adaption often creates back pressure that toasts the motors (sooner than later).

So, I rigged a VERY small squirrel cage fan to the top of a 5 gallon plastic bucket lid.

Plus, drilled a 1 inch hole in the lid, with a stopper.
For easy funnel insertion & water refilling.

Also used PVC pipe out of the bucket lid, piped into fruiting chamber, with simple PVC slip on fittings.

Then, placed a ultrasonic fogger unit in the bucket.

Unit has separate timers.
One for the fan & another for the fogger.

Fogger kicks out MASSIVE fog.
So, you only want to run it 1 or 2 minutes, per 15 minutes of fan time.

agar, so you don't even use a coolmist anymore? Just an ultrasonic?

And does the bucket have water in it? I am a bit confused I guess.

Thanks!

Yes, the bucket has water in it.
He uses his as an ultrasonic and a cool mist.
With just the ultrasonic, he gets good fog, with the small fan it acts like a super cool mist

And IIRC, he is using an ultrasonic fog generator (Generally used in fountains.  It has a floating buoy that keeps it at the ideal level for making fog.)

Fogger unit

Massive fog it creates
(example in a12 quart dish pan)

Bucket is near full of water.
Fogger is in bottom of the bucket of water.

Fogger in water bucket doesn't really need the float.
It generates plenty of fog, without it.

Either way works.
(with or without the float)

Cool, I know someone that uses them in fountains, and the output GREATLY increases if the water level is just right
Maybe her's is cheap though.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm glad to see my thinking was basically on the right track.

Premedman- I never thought of just having it drip in sync with rate in which it drops.

Jaeger- The toilet bowl thing was basically was I was thinking of. Just on a smaller scale. After I posted I just had Idea. Maybe I should create a float out of something like a Ping pong ball. And have it set up inside the coolmist. Have a hose running to the top and a stopper to plug the hose. Once the water fills to a certain point the pressure of the water on the ping pong ball will allow the stopper to plug the end of the hose and stop the water... Use parts from an old three wheeler carburetor perhaps....

Agar-
I love that idea. I read a post you made about that a while back. I've also looked at the homer2 thing hyphae posted about. I'm in the process of setting something like that up at the moment. Getting the proper fan is what has been slowing me down. I don't know how many CFM it needs to be. I guess as long as it could exchange all the volume of air withing the FC in 15 minutes it would work?..

I'm going to use this with a new FC I'm making out of a small green house. This coolmist setup is just for the small FC I made Inside my closet that I wanna move away from soon so I don't wanna really spend much extra cash on it.

Awesome! So that thing is submerged in the water? It looks just like a disassembled ultrasonic!

Lemme ask you something else if I could agar. Where does the squirrel cage fan draw air from? Do you have holes in the bucket? And if so, does the humidity escape?

Tokey your gonna have to register at the nook if your not already to view the link in this post

It's got a pretty detailed description there. Worth the 45 seconds to register.

Tokey,
Can't you just have the output pointed through the lid and have the blower sit on top of the bucket?

It is attached to the outside of the LID. It draws outside air, then blows in (under positive pressure) into the bucket. Then, the positive pressure forces air flow, OUT the pipe, into the FC.

When the FOGGER is on, it blows FOG.

I placed a doubled piece of pre/filter material over the fans intake, to minimize particulates (dust, gnats & whatever) getting into the system.

It's a little bitty thang, no vibration & is very QUIET.
But, "quite" is a relative term.

Would you be able to tell me what somthing like that might cost? And where did you get it, online? or can you get something like that at the hardware store?

haha I learned more in this post than the one on the nook!

And Jaeger, good ole agar answered that for me. My question is though, what about a computer fan blowing down? (I have had HORRIBLE luck with those from radioshack. Three of em burned out on me from a 12/12 operation from cooling a HPS.) I know squirrel cages are better for back pressure but I got a shitload of the little guys.

This is an awesome idea too! Good stuff! Thanks to all who contributed.

You can get this to work, so long as the water replenishment container is airtight, except for the hose. The trick is, you need to make sure that air cannot enter the container holding the extra water, through any route except the feed tube. The tube needs to feed out of the bottom of the container.

What will happen then is, when the water level in the coolmist drops below the level of the replenishment tube, air enters the tube and allows the water to drain. When the water level in the coolmist rises to the level of the feed tube, no more air can enter the reservoir tank, and the flow of water will stop.

To prove the physics of this, take a 2 liter soda bottle and fill it with water. Turn it upside down above an empty mixing bowl and let some of the water spill in. When its 1/2way full, touch the bottle mouth to the surface of the water, and the flow will stop, even though there is a lot of water in the bottle still, much higher than the level of water in the bowl.

You'll need a tube about 1/4" or larger for this to really work well - smaller diameters will encounter problems flowing.
