Re: Who' s on your philosophy "dream team"??(name 3 and why) [Re: Swami]

Come on. You know that is not it. Men just tend to not listen to women. They need to stroke their big egos and shout down all the women so they don't seem sissy. Women are JUST as curious and intellectual as men...and much more subtle. There are few female philosophers because the men told them to shut up and cook supper...maybe wash some clothes. What is unbelievable is the number of women that listen to our male dominated bullshit and buy into it.

Ummm this one's easy (for me anyway)

1. David Hume
Everything he wrote was pure gold, from a time of mass ignorance and government-imposed christianity he spoke out. His works are reasoned and logical. My favourite of his works - his essays on suicide and natural religion, were published when he died to avoid being prosecuted (or should I say persecuted) over them. Now they just seem like commonsensical writings from a philosophical master

2. Bertrand Russell
Again one of the great masters of pure logical philosophy. Has influenced nearly every phiosopher

3. Ludwig Wittgenstein
This dude actually has the answers! He 'explains' philosophy:

Metaphysics: i.e. what is in the world? look and see.

Espistemology: i.e. what can we know? what we can talk about

Ontology: i.e. what is there? a set of facts about the world

Ethics: i.e is there right or wrong?, what is the best life we can live? We don't know this because we CAN'T know. We can't look to the world for answers to this one.

Aesthetics: i.e What is beauty? again, don't/can't know. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Propositions about ethics/aesthetics just come down to prudence, i.e. how you should direct yourself in society.

His greatest lesson:

There isn't going to be an explanation.
There is only going to be a description.

Also, the process of coming to "know" things is only the process of learning how to use your language properly. The world is only a collection of IDEAS. Things only have meaning insofar as what your ideas are about them.

Shortlisted: Socrates (and by association Plato). Hehe what a smart guy.

1. Buddha.. The best example for happy living.
2. Lao Tzu.. The most thought provoking.
3. Jesus.. Another fantastic example for authentic happiness.

Alan Watts.. Great Teacher.
Terence McKenna.. Prevents the mind from getting too stiff.
Kelsang Gyatso.. Simple and clear.

:wtf:

if giving yourself fully to the world and being nailed to a tree as a reward is true happiness, thats pretty depressing

If you're familiar with the story of Jesus, you'll understand that Jesus did not lose his happiness, his peace, compassion, love, and faith, until the final moment before his death. Even though he was subjected to tremendous pain at the hands of those he loved, his care and concern for them did not falter. Since care and concern for others are avenues to authentic happiness, Jesus and his life are an excellent example for happiness.

Jesus lived in a barbaric region during a particularly brutal period in history. It is natural that a man so overtly holy as he would be subjected to such tortures. It is not the pain that he endured which should be emphasized, but the kindness and softeness with which he received it. More important to him than his own immense suffering was that he not take any action to bring even the slightest pain to others. It's this attitude which is a powerful example for spiritual living.

"Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do."

hmmmm... Ok well I guess I see your point. But Nietzsche is sitting on my shoulder right now, whispering to me that Christ died for nothing, and his tale is more a testament to human misery than happiness.

That hasn't been my experience. I WISH I could meet more women who could match my intellectual curiosity, but the search has been very slow-going.

That is understandable. His death dose indeed seem in vain. His example has been almost completely overlooked, and it is painfully clear that since his death 2000 years ago the world has plunged onward into all kinds of horror and strife.

All we can do is what we are capable of doing, however. Even if following the example of Christ does not completely reform the globe, it will indeed ensure that those who encounter us find a little bit of solitude in us, a bit of relief. Even though it might seem small, it is a contribution to the betterment of the world. Because of it's rarity, such a path has far-reaching implications. Between this and cynicism, I would choose the more positive avenue. If we live our lives cynical and unhappy, all we are accomplishing with our lives is a tiny increase in the world's darkness.

It's kind of like recycling. If everybody thought to themselves "I don't need to recycle, I'm just one person," the world would soon be totally filled with garbage. By the same token, if everybody thought to themselves "I don't need to be a better person, I can't make a difference as an individual," the TV airwaves would soon be totally filled with daytime talkshows involving lie detector tests and bootcamps, and scandals about cigars or white spots on a dress.

Paparazzi! Paparazzi! It's all the same tangled web.
