Also, the B12 in animal products isn’t just there because the farmers supplement their animals with it, it is naturally occurring in animals.

Do you live in a cave? Do you walk around with a spear hunting wild animals? No? In my personal opinion, it isn't natural and, so longer not necessary  if you live in a first world country with access to internet and clean plant based foods.
What nutrients in meat, dairy and eggs can't you get from plants? Cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fat are horrible for the body.

I think if one eats a strict vegetarian diet, he will experience Vitamin B12 deficiency.

B12 supplements are cheap. Plant based milks are fortified with B12. And furthermore, why is B12 in animal products? Farmers give animals a B12 supplement and that's why B12 is in animal products.

Just looked up what makes Vitamin B12 cause you got me curious.  Turns out it's produced by bacteria.

Vegan propagandists are the worst.

Try working a non-privileged life of heavy industrial manual labor, where you exert power and burn thousands of calories, 12 hours a day.  You know, a lifestyle where your body is working and demanding real nutrition.

You are a total clown if you tell me kale and vegan tofu chili provides enough calories and testosterone-fueling building blocks to power anybody over real food like rare steak and eggs.

That’s interesting, but you’re not making the case that meat is unhealthy, you’re making the case that people don’t need to eat meat anymore if they put enough effort into excluding it from their diet in a healthy way.

Saying that eating meat is not natural is just dumb though. Of course it’s natural… but just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s good.

Meat is healthy to eat as long as you eat a balanced diet.

Meat is far from healthy; it's horrible for the body. Also, have you heard of the effects of eating animal products on the environment?

Eggs and Cholesterol: Patently False and Misleading Claims

How the Egg Board Designs Misleading Studies

Fat Is the Cause of Type 2 Diabetes
Quote:
Studies dating back nearly a century noted a striking finding: If you take young, healthy people and split them up into two groups—half on a fat-rich diet and half on a carbohydrate-rich diet—we find that within just two days, glucose intolerance skyrockets in the fat group. The group that had been shoveling fat in ended up with twice the blood sugar. As the amount of fat in the diet goes up, so does one’s blood sugar. Why would eating fat lead to higher blood sugar levels? It would take scientists nearly seven decades to unravel this mystery, but it would end up holding the key to our current understanding of the cause of type 2 diabetes.

The reason athletes carb-load before a race is to build up the fuel supply within their muscles. We break down the starch into glucose in our digestive tract; it circulates as blood glucose (blood sugar) and is taken up by our muscles to be stored and burnt for energy.

Blood sugar, though, is like a vampire. It needs an invitation to come into our cells. That invitation is insulin. Insulin is the key that unlocks the door that lets glucose in the blood enter muscle cells. When insulin attaches to the insulin receptor on the cell, it activates an enzyme, which activates another enzyme, which activates two more enzymes, which finally activates glucose transport (as diagrammed in my video What Causes Insulin Resistance?).

What if there was no insulin? Blood sugar would be stuck in the bloodstream banging on the door to our muscles, unable to get inside. With nowhere to go, sugar levels in the blood would rise and rise. That’s what happens in type 1 diabetes: the cells in the pancreas that make insulin get destroyed, and without insulin, sugar in the blood can’t get out of the blood into the muscles, and so blood sugar rises. But there’s a second way we could end up with high blood sugar.

What if there’s enough insulin, but the insulin doesn’t work? The key is there, but something’s gummed up the lock. This is insulin resistance. Our muscle cells become resistant to the effect of insulin. What’s gumming up the locks on our muscle cells? What’s preventing insulin from letting glucose in? Tiny droplets of fat inside our muscle cells, so-called intramyocellular lipid.

Fat in the bloodstream can build up inside the muscle cells, creating toxic fatty breakdown products and free radicals that block the insulin signaling process. No matter how much insulin we have in our blood, it’s not able to sufficiently open the glucose gates, and blood sugar levels build up in the blood. And this can happen within three hours. One hit of fat can start causing insulin resistance, inhibiting blood sugar uptake after just 160 minutes.

This mechanism by which fat induces insulin resistance wasn’t known until fancy MRI techniques were developed to see what was happening inside people’s muscles as fat was infused into their bloodstream. That’s how we found that elevation of fat levels in the blood causes insulin resistance by inhibition of glucose transport into the muscles.

We can also do the opposite experiment. Lower the level of fat in people’s blood and the insulin resistance comes right down. If we clear the fat out of the blood, we also clear the sugar out. That explains the finding that on the high fat, ketogenic diet, insulin doesn’t work very well. Our bodies become insulin resistant. But as the amount of fat in our diet gets lower and lower, insulin works better and better—a clear demonstration that the sugar tolerance of even healthy individuals can be impaired by administering a low-carb, high-fat diet. We can decrease insulin resistance, however, by decreasing fat intake.

The effect is really dramatic–check out at least the end of my video What Causes Insulin Resistance? to see what happens as dietary fat intake drops.

The most concerning downside of low-carb diets, though, is heart health: Low Carb Diets and Coronary Blood Flow

This is the first of a 3-part series on the cause of type 2 diabetes, so as to better understand dietary interventions to prevent and treat the epidemic. In The Spillover Effect Links Obesity to Diabetes, I talk about how that fat can come either from our diet or excess fat stores, and then in Lipotoxicity: How Saturated Fat Raises Blood Sugar, I show how not all fats are equally to blame.

Dietary Cholesterol and Cancer

Studies have shown that eating a diet rich in meat, dairy, and eggs produces significantly more greenhouse gases than eating a plant-based diet. The practice of frying bacon and deep frying pollutes the air with carcinogenic substances. Good ventilation is therefore recommended when frying food.

Are you hard of hearing or what? Why does animals provide real nutrition? How in God name does eating animals provide more testosterone? The body produces enough endogenous cholesterol for hormones. You can get adequate micronutrients on a plant based diet

I eat meat, it's lovely!

But I believe all people should have to go out and kill the species of animal that they are going to have to eat, gut it and eat it.Just once to appreciate the animal.
I think people are too separated form a chicken breasts in a cellophane package in the supermarket to understand where food comes from.

If people had to do this, there would be a LOT more vegetarians.

I used to be a chef, I understand where food comes from. What the animal eats reflects how it looks just before I cook it.

If I was in America I would probably go moose hunting once a year.
I would feel bad, cute old moosey just minding his own business, BOOM! Dinners ready.
But I would use the whole of the animal, I would try and save the skin and antlers too if I killed it.
But yeah they are cute looking and it would make me feel guilty.
Now a cow or a chicken, even a pig, not a problem.

But thinking a little more I would probably have a hard time killing an animal I have reared I would grow attached to them.
So if I was a sheep farmer I would probably find it hard to kill my own animals. But I could go to the next farm over and help the farmer when he needs roast lamb, just not my animals.

I think there's merit to this idea. Not just kill it - rear it, too. Understand what it eats, how it behaves.

When I was a wee kid, we used to keep a couple of goats. Every year, there would be little lambs. One or two of the females we'd keep for the next generation. Excess females were sold off. The males were butchered before they started to taste foul. This happened at the barn to the back of the house. We didn't haul these animals around for hundreds of miles - they'd die within yards of where they were born.

This didn't make me a vegetarian, but in hindsight, it has helped me to understand the fundamental principles of 'meat'. It's not a commodity. It's part of an animal, and part of an ecosystem. There's nothing inherently wrong with eating meat, but there's something fundamentally wrong with how we produce and consume it at this stage. I think if people were more intimately involved in the supply chain, they'd automatically change their behavior, which would benefit virtually all stakeholders (human and otherwise).

There appears to be an increasing number of small-scale attempts to turn this around. Small farms, often with an educational or community signature or run as the side-show of a restaurant, rearing a couple of pigs for local consumption. Cattle farmers choosing to drop out of the regular supply chain, scaling down and teaming up with local butchers and selling their produce locally, cutting out a part of the chain and thereby increasing their profitability. Presently, this is a tiny fraction of total supply and it's mostly accessible for the well-to-do. But it's promising that it happens. Awareness needs to start somewhere, and the fact that it's starting to grow is hopeful.

I think what we need to get past what is happening in this thread as well - extremist arguments. I don't care whether you believe veganism or eating meat is the only way - it's both false. It's a false dichotomy and the truth is that a nuanced set of choices can be sustainable and meet the needs of everyone except a small handful of fundamentalists. Eating meat is okay, but moderation is key for various reasons. There's no reason for proselytizing on either side of the divide - which in fact turns out to be enormously counterproductive anyway.

From an evolutionarily perspective, there's no firm conclusion either. Humans are omnivores - that's how we evolved, and that's also one of the many factors that explains our evolutionary success. If we eat predominantly meat, we don't necessarily die younger - although contemporary, Western meat consumption patterns do come with significant health risks. If we eat predominantly plant-based foods, we do equally well, as has been demonstrated for ages in many societies. Arguments like "you can't do physical labor on a plant-based diet" - it's just one of the many examples of dogma that's false. My own nephew has a physically demanding job that requires a large calorie intake. He's been a strict vegetarian since his early teens (he's in is late 20s now). He's doing fine, and is in fact in much better shape than most of his omnivore friends with similar jobs. Nor is he a grumpy man, tries to 'convert' people to a plant-based diet etc. He's just a regular Joe - just one who has decided long ago that he didn't need steak and sausages. Just like his sister, who's a doctor and has a perfectly healthy, happy toddler she's breast-feeding - all on a vegetarian (and in fact mostly vegan) diet. Both of them would have done precisely as well had they chosen to eat meat. It just doesn't matter from a health-perspective - although their choices do matter a lot to them. More power to them, I say - and to anyone who makes a conscious, deliberate choice.

If you have a choice, as many people in prosperous societies do, please choose wisely. Be open to arguments on either side of the debate. Figure out what *really* matters to you, and get your facts straight if you're not entirely sure what the impact of certain decisions is. Whatever choice you end up making, as long as it's on such deliberate grounds, will be a defendable one.

This statement is blatantly false. Most people eat meat and live long fulfilling lives and have done for the entirety of human existence. How do you explain that if meat is so horrible for your body? You’re just lying…

I do know the effects on the atmosphere though and this is a problem I agree, but growing legumes and other crops also takes up a large amount of land which forests often need to be cleared for, whereas it is possible to herd cattle and such within wooded areas. There are pros and cons to both and people aren’t just going to stop eating meat so we need to figure out the best way of doing things.

I linked clinical, genuine evidence on the health negatives of meat/animal products in last post?

I can't remember the exact numbers but something like 80% of all food, like soy and grains that go to feeding livestock, could feed the whole human population. It takes more resources and land to farm and feed livestock than it does to directly feed humans soy/grains. Calorie for calorie, less resources are needed for humans to live on plant based food than to rear livestock.

Many people (such as Dr. Shawn Baker) have helped to educate folks and debunk a lot of the misinformation we've been told about saturated fat and cholesterol. Fat does not "clog your arteries" - that simple minded view has been debunked.

The idea that dietary fat causes obesity is false. I lost 25 pounds in 10 weeks when I switched from plant based to eating a high fat diet. See "Butter Makes Your Pant's Fall Off" for more info. Many people have lost hundreds of pounds by implementing a high fat diet.

I generally do not eat poultry because it is much too lean to fuel my metabolism.  If I eat chicken, I fortify it with fat, such as butter or pork fat.  I target getting about 70% of my calories from fat. I feel better than ever and my blood tests are great.  My brain loves being fueled by fat. The human brain is about 60% fat.

For humans, red meat is the most nutrient dense food on the planet.  Our bodies are made of meat, and we digest meat very efficiently. The idea you need plant fiber to crap is silly. If you're constipated, increase your dietary fat.  The amount of feces I generate on a 80% animal based food plan is, I'd estimate, a 70% reduction from when I ate mostly plant based.  And I fart maybe one tiny fart every 2 days. I used to fart 5-10 times a day - big rippers.

Simple minded view? Lol

It's not simple. Your life style, genetics and overall diet plays a role which is why I said if you are already physically fat. If you are ripped and live like tarzan, you are going to burn that fat and actually depend on it for energy.

It is well established that saturated fatty acids increase low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. LDL is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Surgeons see it all the time when they cut people open. It's not a myth lol.

We need more solid sources than a celebrity doctor whom is trying to stand out amonst others.

This thread shows how easily manipulated humans can be. You have polar opposite views and "everyone is right" with a sketchy source.

This is how we ended up with Biden.

100% false

There's a lot of scientific evidence the more important factor predicting heart disease risk is the triglyceride/HDL ratio.  The crappy Western diet often results in high triglyceride levels.  People who limit or eliminate plant based foods usually have low triglyceride levels, and remain quite healthy with "high" LDL levels.  Of course "high" implies bad, which is plain wrong.  If 10 "medical experts" told me I should take a statin, I'd tell them all to go to hell.  Don't let these people fool you.  Your life depends on it.

Many people remain quite healthy with so called "high" LDL levels.

The term "high LDL" is in itself propaganda, as it implies bad.
