do you accept evolution as fact? if so, it is logical to accept that humans should be renamed to pan sapiens (pan being the genus for chimpanzee's and bonobos) obviously, any other two creatures that share 98% of their DNA should and are, placed in the same genus. why was this done? because the system (and names for humans) was created in 1735. the taxonomic tree has been shaken up many times since then but the naming of humans has never been changed. i think it's high time it was changed. the idea that man has some god given right to do as he pleases on this planet is the reason we have created a seperate genus (and even family!) for ourselves. We are part of the system. changing our name to better reflect that will, i believe, assist in the mindset change required to stop our blind rush to environmental disaster.

98%? We don't even have the same number a chromosomes as chimpanzees.

Doesn't homo come from Hominidae? (= any of various anthropoid apes of the family Pongidae, which includes the chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. - answers.com)

We are very different from primates because of our brain, I think that's more important than the % of matching DNA.

humans have 23 chromosomes chimps 24. there is evidence that humans have 2 fused chromosomes. human/chimp DNA is 98.5%-95% similar. even at 95% it is still abundantly clear that we belong in the same genus. we are slightly closer to the bonobo, pan paniscus.I was in error regarding the family name, you are correct that the great apes are included. however, the issue around genus classification remains.

having different brains doesn't change anything. genetic similarity is the criteria for modern taxonomic classification.

Order - Primates - High level of intelligence
Family - Hominidae - Walk upright
Genus - Homo - Human
Species - H. sapiens - Modern human

exactly! we are animals and work similarly to other animals. the same rules apply to us with regards to carrying capacity, resource availabilty and habitat destruction. we should not allow ourselves to fall into a false sense of security by assuming our brains exempt us from the rules of ecology.
