Well that rabbit hole sucked

Well,  12 or so years ago,  this is where I got my info. Then when I started back up much had changed,  but I came straight here. Then I seen names like gordotek and white something or other and many more... there's even a shroomeryFB dedicated to DIY hoods. The only ones I found were crazy.. one actually made a mesh out of 1000 cuts of drinking straws(ummm they know they make honeycomb baffle screens... right?). Then I notice that most DIY YouTube are plant tissue culture and just think that myc will work.
However, I'm getting old and the SAB really gets in my way.
I'm Lifetime woodworker, a cert building designer,  and understand air flow and fluid dynamics... hell I wired up my 25hp 3ph 4 headed molder and it's equipped PVSC i programmed with a 25hp 3ph blower to move more chips and air than most can imagine. I run particulate dust machines that require filtration and utilizing swoops and step downs to keep CFM right. Plus keeping micro dust at a minimum. I also spray some really nasty stuff and understand air filtration especially when it comes to my masks

However, I get so much conflicting information or vague. How is anyone able to navigate "acceptable particulate rate" with the mess I've read.  Unless you drop a g or more,  the rest don't meet.
It's very confusing.
So..
I'm pulling through a pre filter and shoving it in a box then though a very expensive filter,  but the inside of the box has to cycle evenly and through the filter so the air flow is uniform and minimize turbulence.
That much I got. Where I get turned is baffles and fan position to equalize exiting air flow. Any decent diy teks that actually are laminar.. not just using the term loosely? All I need is a small thing to do agar..I have a large sab that's great for xfr.. but doing anything delicate at 50 is a bit too far away and awkward.  I searched here and that was page after page of arguing. Which I don't understand.. it's either right engineering or it's wrong.  Oh and I know now. Forget reddit and YouTube. That's insane what I'm seeing. I know up to.. preventing um at our levels. Much different than meeting DHEC dust requirements. I just know every diy the flame was never right.  It blew out. Nobody ever does a smoke test to see a pattern.  Fyi..I read and searched and went down the most confusing rabbit hole ever when it comes to replicating a lab grade hood. There's so much bad data. I need something I can make custom to fit my space and only do agar. Can't see the distance like I used to. I gotta lean in. But,  this is a hobby and meds.i only need a very small work area.

I'm not an aerodynamics engineer, but my understanding is that having a plenum that is ~2x the volume of the filter will allow the air pressure to equalize and therefore eliminate the need for a baffle - assuming you're not blowing the air directly at the back of the filter of course.  This is how most people that use downward facing blowers do it.

This doesn't specifically address baffles/plenum design, but theres alot of good info in it.  Anything you see from Sandman420 regarding LFH can be trusted.

IMHO, unless you're doing bags, there is absolutely no reason to use a flow hood. A SAB is all you need for agar and jars.

At 50 and shakey.. having the freedom even if it's smaller area will make a difference. I did SAB. I'm just not steady like I used to be. Trust me.  I wish my eye site and hands were as good as they were in my 30s. But a flow hood will make my ergonomics much better.

If you can swing the money, it's a game changer as far as comfort goes.  I'm soooo glad I switched to a FFU.  Now my back doesn't hurt from crouching over, I can see everything thats going on and I'm not covered in sweat after a 45 minute session with no AC or fans running.

this might be too low tech but heres what i use. its a clear plastic file folder bin thing, that comes in 2 pieces. 1 piece is the tub/bin thats solid on 5 sides with one side open. basically a cube. the other piece has one solid side and is basically a cubby for the other piece to slide into. i flip it upside down pull the bin out a little bit on the edge of the table and reach my hands up into my still air box!
it works perfect for my agar. its a pain in the ass to pour in though lol it likes to fog up and theres not a whole lot of room for pouring but it manages.
