Vicks cool mist sucks... update... new setup advice?

Hi ppls, well an aquaintance went out and bought a cool mist and hooked it up to a grow chamber, and the thing is succeeding in drying out his cakes only. It puts out moisture, but none whatsoever gets through the hose it would appear. This is dissapointing him, as he had some promising knots on one casing, and now they are gone.... dry... so what do you think he should do? Perhaps stick the hose into a cup of water, to act like a bubbler? or maybe stick it underneath the perlite, hoping the air coming out of the hose will pick up the moisture and circulate it more thoroughly? any advice would help!

You're doing somthing wrong, you've got it hooked up wrong. Lot's of people use these with great success. Check your lines and joints to see if everything is air tight. Vicks cool mists work better than anything else.

My friend said that the shorter the outbound hose (between Vics and terrarium), the better, because the moisture tends to condense in the tube and drip back into the Vicks, and this effect worsens with tube length. He also said that using a bubbler in a container inside the terrarium in conjunction with the Vicks could be useful.

u prob need to look at the lid on the rubbermaid. Air can leak from here like hell. Go to the auto parts store and get some of the camper cover foam gasket stuff. Just tell then ur putting a camper cover on ur truck and u need a roll of the foam gasket. It usually comes in 50 ft rolls for like 5-8 bucks it works pretty good u might need to put it on the rubbermaid and on the lid. It has a sticky back so it's really easy to do. Cuts down on alot of the escaping air

Wellmy aquaintance doesnt have any joins in thei set up... not sure exactly what you mean by that. Ok... well If anyone has a cool mist s maybe they can help... My Aquaintance (mr x.) has drilled holes on the top part of the humidifier.... to the right and more towards the front of the main hole which is covered up. the hose fits in the drilled hole pretty tightly. about 1 and 1/2 feet of hose connects the vicks to the terarrium. the hose goes up from the hole, than curves downwards, then back up into the terarrium. maybe this is why no moisture is coming out the hose ? should perhaps he have drilled the holes on the actual side of the device, as opposed to the top? Thanks again

Your hole in the top of the Vicks (versus side) should be OK....My friend agrees with the comments about using a hose with a larger (over 1.5 inch) diameter, but agrees that a foot and a half length could be problematic (he got his down to 6 or 7 inches, after actually SEEING the condensation drip back into the Vicks through a longer CLEAR tube). Also watch out, as has been pointed out, for other air leaks (my friend found that both air and particle-ized water were slipping out of the crack between the top and bottom parts of the Vicks). In his humble opinion (IHHO???) putting the whole thing in a regular terrarium could even be dangerous, not sure....it is after all electrical and was meant to generate humidity, not be covered in it.

My goldfish has his oldschool coolmist inside of his dishwasher terrarium with no problems. He had the same problem with the hoses...it would get condensation inside the tube and drip back in.....

Definatly do not put it inside of a terrerium, that's just asking for problems.
A friend of a friends Iguana has a foot and a half long hose attached to the outlet vent of the cool mist then sealed with duct tape.. duct tape on the hole going into the terrerium as well.. it's about 3/4 inch thick and a foot and a half long.. he runs it for 15 minutes every 2 hours and it maintains a constant humidity of 95% or so.
Just make sure everything is air tight, if you need get a wider hose and shorter legnth.. i'm sure that may help. I don't know what else to tell you, it should work. If it still doesn't work take the cool mist back, it's faulty.

ok.... he is going to try a wider hose. He will use a make shift "hose" made from clear plastic, using duct tape to attempt to make it air tight. We shall see what happens. he will let me know, and Ill let you all know! also..... does an aquarium bubbler provide humidity or just gas exchange, or both ?

Bubbler will provide some degree of both (humidity & gas exchange)....of course, the actual amount of both depends on the capacity of the air pump forcing the bubbles.....

You DO NOT need a bubbler and air stone setup when using a cool mist, that's why you use a cool mist, to eliminate the bubbler and stone method. The cool mist works much better, it pumps humidified air in and exchanges fresh air for stagnet in the same process.
Keep playing around with it NixHex, you'll eventually get it to be precise. Cool Mists kick ass..

my aquaintance has decided to ditch the cool mist right now. he cant get the humidity correct, and has casings and cakes that have been in there a week allready. he says the casing has had strong and many knots for days... so something is just keeping the pins back.. most likely a constant rh level. So he has moved his setup to two smaller aquariums, with a perlite layer, a bubbler hose running into each one, and both are nearly air tight. this should do the trick... yes ?

The dawg that I saw on the street pissing on the fire hydrant told me that.... He was using an ultra sonic humidifer in a 10 gallon setup. He told me that he found that letting the humidifier run for 2 minutes (5 times/day) , then useing a portable elctric fan to fan out the dense cloud of fog gave great results of 95-99% rh. There is condensation on the sides, but it is faint. He told me this batch is doing better, than the first, even on perlite cakes Then he had to go, I told him I would post this...

A couple more things, You need to run a garden hose on that monster, you may be able to run 2. I forgot to add a pic that the dawg gave me. He also says that he does not alter the humidifier and just uses tape to secure the hose to the exhaust of the humidifier. But then again your taking advice from a canine .

bit of an update... the new setup that my aquaintance is running seems to be working well for him. For some reason he keeps dropping by to tell me about this stuf.. i dont really even know him! Anyway, the tubs are constantly at 74 degrees, and appear to be very humid due to visual condensation. He said he drilled a small hole in order to mist the chamber occasionally without taking the lid off. He t hinks this will keep the humidity at a better level, and the bubbler will cover the air exchange. Oh yeah he covers the hole with duct tape post misting. any thoughts ?

Well, I found the dog. He was pissing on my tire The dog informed me that (where he lives) they are on sale at walgreens drugstore. He told me he spent around 30.00. It has a nice capacity and doesn't need refilling for a respectable amount of time. . They also sell a "higher dollar" model, but if you examine the box they are both made by sunbeam One version just has the "Walgreens" name on it. Kinda like the generic brands of cereal. Give them a call, it couldn't hurt.
Wishing you the best of luck.............
