I agree with Snobrdr that Cool Mists are...uh....cool, but sometimes they require experimentation time....more of an art than a science... to get them adjusted properly (until then, they tend to blow more air than humidity). In your current "emergency" situation, you may not really have had lots of time to play with it, so hopefully your alternative solution should do the trick, especially since you identified maintaining proper humidity as the issue.
