plenum related flow hood question. how big??
    #5906093 - 07/27/06 05:08 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

ok i decided to build myself a nice little flow hood using 420m's nook style tek.
http://www.thenook.org/archives/tek/420mhood.htm

my question is about the plenum chamber( the space between the blower and filter) . just how big dose it have to be. if i leave myself 22" in height for the bottom working chamber, and after i place the filter in i only have 6 1/2" of a plenum chamber. is that enough space??

my box is 50 1/2" H, 22" W, and 30" D. the pre filter takes up the top 3 inches. the next ten inches is blower chamber. this leaves me with about 35" to play with. if i place the bottom of the filter at 22 1/2" from the floor that only leaves me with 6 1/2" of plenum.

That will be enough plenum. I should also say I'm no fan of that design although a few growers have had good luck with it. I don't like the downward flowing air because it seems that contaminants which get knocked off your hands/gloves will get blown into your open jar or petri dish. I prefer the filter to be behind the work area so contaminants are blown back towards your body and not towards your sterile media.

hmmm.. good point.
its not to late to turn It on its side, and use what use to be the bottom, and make it the front. yes, but then i would have to find a new home for it. the spot i have now i like very much. thank you Roger i will keep this in mind. even when completed i dont see that much work in converting it.

one more question. i know i need "100 feet per minute(fpm)" of air flow once all is done. im working a collection of used blowers, and i have no idea what kind of CFMs im working with to get any kind of guess of my air flow. in that link the builder uses a lighter held against the air flow to show current. is that a good guide to go by. that it mostly blows out a lighter??

No. You want it to bend the flame of a bic lighter between 45 and 90 degrees, but not come close to blowing it out. If it blows too much, just use something to block off part of the intake, or you could even stack two or three prefilters together to achieve the same thing.

That thing looks pretty massive! The design looks pretty sound to me, I'd say you can't go wrong with that one.

If I were doing it though I would put the prefilter after the blower and I certainly wouldn't spray my hepa with alcohol.

You can also probably find a better surface to use unless you like smelling varnish for 6 coats worth. They sell sticky countertop protector stuff that you can just lay down. I would use that.

Trippin, If you get bored someday, could you hold some incense in several places within that box and get some pics? I'm really curious about the airflow and if the 90 degree bend creates any eddys or other turbulence. I remember when agar first posted that picture, and remember thinking he could also throttle down the speed controller a bit more.

Microbiologists use flow hoods of that design all the time. I've never actually seen one like they often show here in a lab before.
