Small fruits... how to proceed?
    #28271412 -

This is my first attempt at this and I'm honestly just excited to have some sort of success regardless of how small.. lol.. Amazonian MSS straight to grain. im guessing my fruits stayed small because my sub is a little dry. it's pulled away from the tub about 1/4 in all around. My question is, what's the best way to proceed? Should I harvest the larger fruits and dunk my cake? Should I try and remove everything then dunk and hope for a better 2nd flush? Most are still super tiny but a handful have started breaking veils and I'm just not sure what to do here.. thanks in advance

Theyโ€™re likely small because you used MSS and thatโ€™s a crap shoot on genetics.

I didn't really know what I was doing when I started, but I've spent the last 2 months learning and making vast improvements in my tek and I'm about a week away from starting my 2nd attempt with some real effort this time..lol.. I get MSS is a crap shoot, but hey we all gotta start somewhere I guess..lol

Thea are so CUTE!

To my untrained eye the tub doesn't look bad. How are you getting fresh air inside? CO2 levels do affect growth. If you search on YT, a chanel named "pop shrooms" has an interesting video on tubs that have been flushed with CO2 vs ones that haven't...
When I made my first tub, I drilled holes for air exchange (covered with micropore tape).
Shrinkage is normal. It has also taken me by surprise by how much my cake has shrunk. After flush 4 there was a little less then half the original volume left.

What does โ€œflushed with C02โ€ mean? 99% of the time small fruits is genetics.

Well, a tub was constructed in such a way that there is a hose running through the substrate and releasing CO2 into it.
Here it is:

So, basically depriving them of oxygen. Yeah, choking them off from oxygen is not good.

This guy comes off as well intentioned, but hes using outdated or pointless methods.

As for the co2, not giving them fresh air is indeed detrimental to their growth.

Oki:thumbup: I will keep this in mind, thank you:smile:
Would you rate the following this outdated or inacurate?

I think that mass of substrate is more related to fruit size than simply depth.  That's why straw shrooms are so big, cuz it's easy to create a large mycelial mass.  Small trays of straw on the other hand typically yield smaller fruits.

Also, I'd like to add a few things to mushmasters

Not necessarily.  For example, in a finely tuned system, playing around with the co2 levels can lead to much larger fruits than simply giving lots of fresh air.  High co2 makes the stems stretch, but get it too high, and you end up with skinny stems and small caps.  Detailed manipulation of co2 levels allows one to stretch the stems with high co2 levels, but not let co2 get too high so as to not stunt cap size or stem thickness.

Along these same lines, certain strains (pure cultures, not spore strains) are much more resistant to the small cap, skinny stem reaction to high co2 levels.  These strains came be made huge in a low/no fresh air environment.

But in general Mushmaster's right, for most people and most strains, plenty of fresh air will yield bigger fruits than not enough fresh air.

Also, biggest fruits I've ever seen in my life were border busters.  They pinned from the side of a tray, well below the casing surface.  Border breakers are commonly the largest shrooms ever seen, by many cultivators.  Nobody has really proven why, but it's pretty consistent.  If somebody's been growing for a while, their largest shrooms were most likely border breaks.

It's a 20 year old quote, but I believe in the theory. I have no experience playing around with co2 levels outside of adjusting the holes or fresh air exchange methods of my tubs. I believe is known that mushrooms try to get away from pooled co2 or get up to more fresh air though. That is why starving mushrooms of fresh air cause them to become skinny, or causes aerial mycelium.

I'm sure if you wanted you could manipulate co2 levels perfectly to your advantage somehow. However, as the quote says, for most people just providing fresh air is more than adequate.

Co2 isn't what caused these small fruits though.

I'm using non modified tubs, just flipping the handles and resting the lids on top. I've learned that I don't care for this tek and plan to drill 2in holes and make some standard modified tubs for my next go round. The lids are easily knocked around, can't stack bins, and atleast for my situation maybe let too much air exchange happen. I now have a much better idea of what I'm doing from when I started, I went out and got a pressure cooker, several cases of mason jars, 50lbs of grains, syringes, needles, built a sab, gloves, alcohol, hell I even got a mini fridge off marketplace specifically for storing jars of liquid cultures that I've been working on for the last month..lmao.. im gonna get this shit right this time!!

Read this before you drill 2 inch holes.
