Rye Berries / Grow Bags * 1
    #28205020 -

Hi,

I might be missing the TEK listing, but I am posting about my rye berry and grow bag experience.

So far, I've tried PCing my own rye berries from raw, bought pre cooked rye berry grow bag, and have tried rye berry with dung grow bag. None of these methods have yielded positive results.

With PCing my own rye berries for spawn, I've gotten some green contam. So, I tried the bag, but it also didn't seem to grow much mycelium before it got contam.

Now, I've got this dung / rye grow bag, which I mixed up a little bit early. So, I've got little to no mycelium growth after several months. No signs of contam yet though! At one point, this bag got frozen in outdoor storage while I was in the middle of a move recently. Since, I've brought it bag inside.

On all of these, I sterilized the syringe needle by using a lighter to get almost all of the needle (starting from the tip) red hot. I let the needle cool down for just a few moments. I shoot a little liquid through the needle to completely cool. Then, alcohol prep the inoculation area before finally putting 10mL in several areas of the bag / jar.

I have only really had success with PF Tek jars, but they do not yield the size or weight I'm looking for, and require a few more steps I'm trying to cut out.

Any suggestions on this rye / bag tek? Easiest monotub tek?

I have a 23qt PC, but now have a gas stove, which I think can damage the PC. I had another one of these a few years ago where I put it on the grill side burner, and it warped on the bottom. So, they replaced it, but I think they said don't use it on direct gas. What do you think?

Also, since the move, I had a spore syringe in storage that froze. It is now thawed, but I was wondering if the spores could survive freezing temps.

Thanks!

Spores to Grain: Why it's discouraged & Recommended Alternatives

If your bags are contaminating before being spawned either your grain processing, culture, or sterile technique is the cause.  IMO If a bag can't fully colonize in a month, it needs to go in the trash.

Frozen spores are likely dead, so you'll probably want to get some new ones.

Hey I just found this post by searching for a girl bags because I’m in the middle of my first grow and I’m having some problems.

I bought them all in one bag and then inoculated them and they started to colonize and somebody told me to mix them up. After I did that they never resumed growing any more mycelium and it’s been weeks. There is no contamination. How long should I keep a bag before i consider it a loss.

I spent $100 on these bags so as long as there is no contamination could I just inoculate them again with more spores? I don’t see why not?

What are you using to inoculate? A spore syringe? Or LC you made yourself?

If they stalled after a mix, there's probably contamination, likely from the syringe. Spore syringes are never clean, and it's highly discouraged to put them to grain. Don't reinoculate.

Put your next $100 toward a pressure cooker, and learn agar so you can clean up your cultures first. Buying presterilized grain is a huge waste.

Should start your own thread with pictures. If it has been longer than a week, they are fucked. They are most likely contaminated, even if you don't see the signs. Don't try knocking them up again, you'll just be tossing more money down the drain.

spore syringe. I’ve read a lot about contamination, but there is nothing inside of the bag. It looks exactly like I did the day i bought  it.

I understand why it wouldn’t be worth it for some people, but for me, I only grow occasionally, and I don’t want to go through the time and effort to sterilize grains and do all
the extra work.

IF I can complete a successful grow by using green bags and inoculating them, it would be worth it to me. So far the results are the next, because some bags have grown great, and the other ones have not done anything. I use the same technique for all of them.

Before I had a chance to read your post, I did, in fact re-inoculate bags that were not growing using a different syringe, and now they are going fine while others still are not.

unfortunately, I have learned nothing because the results are so sporadic. I have bags that are doing awesome after doing things that I was not supposed to and I have other bags that are not growing after doing everything correctly.

This is the first time for me and I read a lot about contamination and judging by all the pictures that I have seen it appears like you would see the contamination. I have bags that have been inoculated for seven or eight weeks that did nothing but also, there is nothing inside them, no mold, no sludge, no grime

I don’t think anyone here can help you troubleshoot all in one grow bags. They are inherently prone to contamination because syringes are inherently contaminated.

The cheapest, most reliable and most straightforward way to grow shrooms is PF Tek. If that isn’t giving you the results you desire and you’re not willing to sterilize grain/learn agar then I guess you’re at an impasse.

I mean you can always keep buying grow bags and keep being disappointed

Three out of six of them are growing awesome. The other three are not. The spores I injected into them had actually froze but the manufacturer told me they were fine I have now learned that’s not true.

as of right now, one of my bags looks like it’s close to being colonized, but how do I know exactly here’s a picture of the bag.

I am trying to trust the online vendor for properly prepared bags.

The spores I bought were from a reliable vendor. The PF-tek grows I've done (mostly) didn't contaminate. At one point, I went from the mid-west to southern US, and my grows were contaminating a lot.

The first bag I bought, again, I mixed up before the rye was fully colonized. Then, it was outside in the freezing temps for a couple of weeks before I brought it inside (was in the middle of a move). It looks like I bought that one in the beginning of December 2022. So, 4 months now. There is some mycelial looking growth in small amounts around the bag; I was just going to let it keep going until it crapped out or worked.

I bought another one from the same vendor, and I inoculated it with the syringe of B+ that was frozen previously (now weeks thawed); I didn't check them under my microscope, which is also packed away in storage.

It's been ~10 days of being packed in a box (covered) and at room temp, which is about 70deg here. There is some white/mycelial growth, but I noticed one or two grains were blueish. I'm hoping this is just bruising, but I'm not sure yet.

These grow bags have a filter at the top, but I haven't been utilizing it. So, I'm not sure if I should get bigger boxes, and vent the bags; I was trying to keep them somewhat compacted / undisturbed and air-free (I thought this could initiate fruiting).

When flaming the syringe tip, would it be okay to wipe the soot off with alcohol on a cloth? Should I be wearing gloves and face mask? I definitely wipe inoculation port with alcohol, but the soot thing worries me. None of the guides I've seen mention that.

I have a 23-quart PC, but at this new location there is a gas stove. The last time I put a 23-quart PC on the grill outside, its bottom became convex, and nearly exploded. Presto replaced it for free, noting that I should not use it on an open flame. I'm not sure if the indoor stove would be any better, but I don't want to risk destroying this PC. I'm looking at getting a counter-top glass induction burner, but some of the other ones I've had haven't gotten hot enough to boil water quickly.

I am familiar with the PF-tek, but was trying to get into bulk substrates / monotubs for higher yields. Every grow I've done so far hasn't really yielded enough for me to get the insane visuals I've had in the past. I typically do 7g - 14g dry lately. Maybe I'm not getting REAL p.cubensis...

I tried agar from an agar block and Petri dishes in the past, but it didn't seem to work out right when melting down the agar. Powder might be better.

Still, I'm not sure about the sterilization/sanitation/pasteurization process for preparing bulk substrates.

My experience with grow bag rye berries and homemade jar rye berries has been awful. I've never been able to start a grow from that as they've all typically failed or gotten mold.

Thought about trying popcorn, but may go back to PF-tek soon. I need to get more supplies, and build another good clean-air box (one of my "friends" still has my other nicely designed one)...

Right now, because of my instability and living situation, I am looking for the easiest way to cultivate a good amount of mushrooms with the lowest overhead.

I've seen some pictures of people growing in punching bag sized grow bags; multiple layers with mushrooms growing out of the side. I'm not sure how much is involved in that though.

Here is bag one (mostly black), and bag two (not mixed yet).

Then get used to shitty results, or no results at all. You can do PF Tek and that is not much extra effort at all and is less prone to contamination problems. Other than that, don't do spores to grain. It's bad practice and you're just wasting your time and money.

Well, I bought the bags because I saw a bunch of videos on YouTube and the results that they were getting were more than enough for me.  if I got a handful of mushrooms, I would be more than happy.

I got extremely lucky because I have no contamination and three of the bags are colonizing. The three that are not colonizing because I used frozen spores and didn’t know that they wouldnt work.

So as of right now, if you look above and see my pictures, can you tell me how I know when the bag is fully colonized?

Yeah, because youtubers are definitely gonna show you all the shitty grows when they're trying to sell you bunk growbags...
Dude, you either do Agar or pftek, or you will literally never stop having contamination problems. Stop throwing away your money and time to these charlatans.
You'll get a handful and more of mush if you just do pftek properly.
Stop trying to find the easy way out, it's more work in the long run.
That bag is heavily contaminated with mold, it's not gonna give you anything.
Do it right.

I keep having this strange circumstance where I ask the same  very simple question and I get detailed responses that have nothing to do with what I asked. Ive tried about four times now and it’s pretty clear that we have some people that are getting upset that i didn’t grow the way they wanted me too.

Ive only invested a few hours on this site and it has been the strangest shit I’ve ever seen. I feel like I’m being recruited into a cult. You’re only allowed to ask questions if they fall directly in line with the opinion of the everyone else.

At first I provided a bunch of detail in my post and I will get a bunch of stupid responses so  I progressively cut all of that out to just say, “HOW DO I KNOW WHEN A BAG IS COLONIZED“,?  I figured if I made it that easy and straightforward then I would get a normal response. NOPE.

I got another fucking essay response about pftek, saving money, charlatans on youtube, contaminatation, blah blah blah.

I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT PFTEK OK? I Don’t care about agar. I dont care if i waste 3000$. I don’t care if everyone on the planet robs me. You guys have literally answered every question imaginable , other than what I asked.

i’m seriously wondering if most of the people here even know what they’re talking about because all I have heard about since day one is contamination. Six weeks ago I had someone tell me that my bags were garbage and definitely contaminated. They told me that they would never grow. They looked exactly the same as the day I bought them and common sense told me they were fine  so I kept them and guess what? They all grew.

So far every answer….whoops i mean statement that I’ve got here has been wrong. Just a bunch of angry downers bitching and telling me i will fail because growbags suck. Meanwhile it’s been the easiest thing i’ve ever grown in my life. This last guy is telling me my bag is filled with mold.😂. I guess I’ll just wait another week and then fruit these things. Then everyone can tell me that they probably aren’t that good and they’re never going to be edible.

The moral of the story is that I bought grow bags and every single step of the way I’ve been told that they suck and they don’t work.  I swear to God people in this room will be telling me that mushrooms will never grow…..while i’m picking them.

I’ll put some pics of all my mold 😂. Cant wait for the 100 responses about how grow bags don’t work and  no one is gonna help me NOW lol. Don’t fool yourself, you never were gonna help or you already would have.

It’s just strange that a group of adult men becomes so emotional and distraught if you don’t listen to them. I’m sure there’s plenty of great growers here but there’s just as many people to don’t know what they’re talking about and just follow orders  and do whatever they told.

Every person here told me that my bag was contaminated and to throw it away. I’ve never grown a mushroom in my life and I knew it didn’t make sense just by looking at pictures of previously contaminated bags mine was nothing like it.. Now here we are and I’ve got mushrooms everywhere.  do you think any of the arrogant people who talk down to me would admit they were wrong? Of course not.
