Philosophy and Depression
    #2809824 - 06/19/04 09:35 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Heya guys and gals! Well first off, I love your forum and pretty much everyone here- I'm still not sure about that Mixamatronius fellow though, but this is my honeymoon period and I'm not gonna ruin it, dammit!

Anyhoo, seriously...very seriously *lowers voice* do you think there is a relationship between philosophy and depression? I mean I've read most of the current posts and even gone back and dusted off some of the old ones, and it does seem that in the split between "believers" and "skeptics" that the believers seem a whole heck of a lot happier.

Am I wrong? And is this in itself enough reason to believe?
I'm not talking about belief in having wings and jumping off buildings, I'm talking about things like love, dreams, obe's, etc.

If you only believe in what you see and feel aren't you left with the fact that you are stuck in a monkey suit scratching and clawing with your fellow primates until you meet your inevitable end?

How depressing is that?

.. so your talking about people who believe in love and dreams and obe's? as opposed to those who dont?

i dunno anyone who doesnt believe in love, or dreams for that matter..

what would be a clearer line to draw might be around after life/collective consciousness. and the believers and nonbelivers there.

i dunno if i would draw the same conclusion that believers were happier than non's.
and now that ive changed the comparisions i dunno if it matters..

Everyone here is both skeptic and believer and I will wager my usual $20K to anyone who can prove differently.

No, I am owed $20K, as was clearly evidenced by before and after posts on a non-event that was predicted, but never got a penny.

Mixamatronius fellow

Is this like Jeopardy where I have to come up with a question? OK, how about:

"What do you get when you cross Positronious with Mixomatosis?"

Well it does seem that Swami is the only skeptic here with a sense of humor. Or at least, *consistent* sense of humor.

Using Mix/Pos..(sorry for the mix up  ) only as an example, generally skeptics do seem to be rather negative in tone and personality. I wonder if that helps or hurts their cause or is it simply part and parcel of the philosophy they espouse? Should those who swing more to the skeptical side of the spectum expect to become nasty and negative or is this trait independant of ones world view?

..(sorry for the mix up )

Did you try "sorry for the pos up" first and then slap yourself when you realized that it did not work?

I saw your post there, zorb. Nice try on the quick delete, but I am the fastest keyboard in the west.

FYI, all my one-liners can't be winners. Sometimes ya gotta test the limits.

It's okay, Swami. Simon Cowell may not like your jokes, but I do.

But do you (or anyone) have any thoughts about the ideas I am bringing out?

their.. cause??

Do you not have a point of view? And are you not attempting to spread that point of view here?

So I'm a skeptic? Please define terms..

Based upon your posts. If you are not, please show me some of your posts pointing to the contrary.

philosophy is merely a more intelligent way to be unhappy

Before we can intelligently discuss cause, you must first show some evidence of your supposition.

The only study I have seen that may support your idea is that church-goers are slighty happier and live a little longer than non-church-goers. My educated guess is that this is based more on social acceptance and group support rather than on beliefs, as non-church going Christians do not exhibit the same positive effects.

I repeat: define "skeptic"

Do you not have a point of view? And are you not attempting to spread that point of view here?
That "sounds" like it "makes" "sense" but.. "nevermind"
