I don't think anyone minds tax money being used to pay for the service. It's when executives are spending it on themselves instead of improving the rail service it gets offensive.

I was referring to the subject of the article for which this thread was created. To answer your question though, NO, I do not think education should be free.

Perhaps the problem is that these CEOs have no incentive to improve their rail service. Apparently, whether the product is excellent or they're sucking it up, they'll be seeying enough cash to give themselves these ridiculous raises. I know this will come as a shock, but if this was a privately owned company, and they weren't turning a profit, there wouldn't be any money for executives to allocate to themselves. The name of the game is INCENTIVE.

It used to be a private company. Same problem - executives awarding themselves enormous pay rises while running the rail network into the ground. The government had to effectively renationalise it to save the UK rail system from complete and utter disaster.

Thats not a very sensible tactic for optimisng human potential. Surely it is in a societies interest to pay a small dividend to ensure that all its members receive an education.

I absolutely believe it is in societies interest for all its members to receive an education. I personally would donate money to charities that would help the very poorest among my countrymen finance education for their children. I personally would encourage those I know to do the same. Having said all that, I would NEVER have someone that didn't want to be FORCED to contribute money for education. Maybe they're greedy fucks, maybe they they could contribute better to the world in some other way with the extra money, I cannot know and neither can government.

I'm fairly uninformed on the subject so I'm going to try and get some background information from a few different sources a little later. Few questions though:

1)Were there no other private railroad services? If not, why was this monopoly allowed to remain unbroken in the first place(I have suspicions about this but, as I said, I have just about zero knowledge on the subject so I'll await an answer)? If there were, why did the government intervene...the company should have been allowed to fall apart if it was doing so poorly, the CEOs would have either had to fix shit up or face the end of their company.

2) You say REnationalize...was it originally nationalized and then sold off, or was this an error?

I'll read up some more in a while and hopefully get you a more informed response.

We pay over $10k a year on property taxes that basically go all to school systems, but we never used public schools and it was cheaper to goto private schools, but they still made us pay those taxes. We had to support 3-4 kids on the taxes we payed, and we are by no means rich.

Watch the flaming. Consider this post and this post only as advice rather than an official warning. Next time I have to intervene there will be repercussions.

It was either that or let the privatised companies destroy the UK rail system mush. The fact that they ran the network into such a catastrophic state gives you an idea of the effectiveness of privatisation.

How would you like to see a pay to play educational system set up? How would it be regulated? Would the syllabus be standardised across the board?

Realistically, I would have the federal government out of education as soon as possible. I would then gradually see state regulations be erased and then eventually education be handed over from local governmental authority, to private hands. Vouchers would definitely be a good intermediary step. This deregulated educational system would not be regulated by politicians of the public sector but by the parents of the students attending each individual school, as it should be. While there would of course be parts of the syllabus that a vast majority of private schools would incorporate, the curriculum would be determined by the individual schools based upon the wishes of those who pay for their service.
