Is my compost alright?
    #2761359 - 06/03/04 10:23 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, it's been about 2 months since 10 lbs of High Mountain Compost in 2 seperate trays has colonized.  Today they were cased with coco/verm and put in an absolute perfectly sized pod.  They, however, looked not that vibrant white that one expects mycelium to emit.  Definately no contams, but not bright white.  This led to the idea that maybe the trays are too dry to fruit?  I didn't want to stick my finger in to check.  Although there was some condensation on the lids that covered the trays, they were not perfectly sealed for an indefinate amount of time(maybe 1-2 weeks) but were inside of a closed dark rubbermaid.  Any help?

Casing isn't neccessary. If the whole thing is overlayed, it might be easier to just fruit as is. If you still want to case, I'd take matts advice and scratch.

I would sterilize a metal wire and use that to deep scratch. That way you can still scratch it but you wont have to remove the casing layer. If it is overlayed, that will be the only way to get the mycelium to colonize the casing layer. Good luck and if ya have any pics im sure it will help. Peace!!!!!!

Could I use, say, a sterile fork to push the casing layer to one side than scratch off the dead mycelium on the exposed side? Than push the casing layer over to the scratched side and repeat on the other side? Then just mat down the casing layer on top of the compost?
