Genetic Backgrounds * 3
    #27479573 -

Hey everyone! I run a group called Cubensis Genetic Library on facebook and am hoping to dig up some hard to find or unknown to me genetic backgrounds for strains. I will make a post comment under this one that I will edit as I go. Please feel free to comment additional strains that I should add. I will post both isolations/mutations and crosses. As long as it is a publicly released strain and should be properly stabilized. The exception to the stabilization part is cultures with no spores such as Enigma.

Is this just a list or varieties, or something like a genealogical tree derived from comparative genomics? I'm several orders of magnitude more interested in one than the other.

Comparative genomics could be interesting, but it would be very expensive for anyone doing this as a hobby. Whole genome sequencing is around $1,000 - $1,500 per sample, and that's assuming you can do all the bioinformatics analysis yourself. Add at least another $5k on top of that if you can't.

My gut feeling is that there's a little too much hype around mushroom "genetics" and "strains" right now. Maybe because the grey market mushroom dispensaries that have been popping up online have been marketing things the same way cannabis dispensaries do. People like to have options.

With some notable exceptions like enigma, PE, and leucistic/albino varieties, I'd be surprised if many people could tell most varieties apart in a blind test.

Woah, that's so expensive! I threw the comparative genomics guess because one time I looked up how much it costs to get a sequence at my local university. I wanted to play around with the data and compare it to online samples. They charge like 2 dollars for a DNA sequence. Do you think it's so cheap because they give the samples to research assistants (students) to process, or are they just entirely different procedures?
Honestly, if someone gathered a bunch of mushroom sequences, I'd take a crack at figuring out the bioinformatics algorithms. I've never done it before, but I'm sure I could do it. It should basically just be a variation of the longest common subsequence problem, which is used in version control systems.

And yeah, I was just telling another guy how annoying I find all this talk about "strains".

Aside from the PE stuff the "strain" shit is annoying. The mushroom has enough magic already in it, there is no need to dazzle it up any more. Just gilding the lily at this point.

Different procedures.

The quote you got is probably for Sanger sequencing, which is cheap but only gives you a single DNA sequence that is something like 500 base pairs long. It's used for DNA barcoding, which would be able to tell you the species, but I'm not sure if different "strains" would be sufficiently different enough at that specific genomic location for you to reliably tell them apart.

Whole genome sequencing is done with Next Generation Sequencing technology rather than Sanger. You get hundreds of millions of individual sequences back, which together cover the entire genome rather than one specific region.

There's published whole genome sequencing data out there for Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens if you really wanted to try to learn how to play around with it.

Gotcha. My background is CS, not biology, so I had no idea.
Yeah, I found those reference Psilocybe sequences, but in the end I didn't really do anything with it.

I’ve never seen anything about Avery’s being related to GT.

A few posts from way back said it was an albino Cambodian.

It’ll take a ton of research to find evidence to verify a lot of these.

This is rad! I know a cube is a cube as far as consumption goes but for the varieties are really aesthetically pleasing for the grower

My only input is I believe white teacher is GT x PE

Also had never heard of homestead pe before vs the SWPE very interesting

Also DC Mak also has some genetics you might add to this list

ESS is PE x KSSS (I'm not sure which lineage of either varieties were used for the cross, but that's what it is)

Just wanted to add that to the list so I could provide something useful instead of saying  :threadmonitor:

I have a spot for PR in my heart, love them.
Would love to see the blob PR.

Years ago I had a pr isolate that would produce PE like dicks with blue veiled chokers that sent you into a different dimensions.

I'm searching for them again.

I agree with the notion that a little too much is going into strain hype. Not saying there is nothing to the different varieties but perhaps some are being oversold. I don’t want to cast shade but I think some of these are less of distinct variants and just a group of one variant that produced a range of phenotypes due to ms. However that’s just my opinion. If people know better please share the reasons why. I’m open to hearing them.

I like how RW is referenced as a parent to a cross on this list but isn’t considered a cross on its own. It was for the record AA+ and Colombian Rust Spore.
