Are the mushrooms' genes per shroom or per (myc.)colony? Like if I have a small print and use the spores will I get flushes of small shrooms and vice versa? As I think about it, the flushes my bud has had have small and large shrooms, so I imagine the genes aren't relavent in terms of spores, but rather clones.

Teonan seems to be the resident expert on mushroom genetics

Basically in a multispore innoculation, you will have many different substrains colonizing the substrate. Many are not capable to fruit, some are. Some will produce large, some will produce small... Environmental conditions will help decide which will grow better or will suit better.

Isolations are taking a substrain which has fruiting capabilities, thus taking out the ones which wont fruit, and having a larger yeild.

Im a little tired/drunk at the moment...hope that made sense.

I think I got ya... so are the terms "clone" and "isolate" synonymous?

cheers!

even when you clone a mushroom, you get different substrains that arise on the agar.to isolate, you would transfer each sector to new dishes until the whole dish grows just one large even mycelial mat. that is your isolate.

hope that helps some.

not in reply to you question daywalker.

though automan, isn't a clone selecting a unique strain that will not produce substrains?

Cloning is just selecting for a certain type of growth -- the mycelium will sector. It's all the same genetics, though. Multispore culture has a variety of different possible phenotypes, though, so a small print could produce big mushrooms. The size of the mushrooms has a lot to do with substrate depth, too, but it also has to do with genetics + hormones....
