Next time though instead of using roundup just put down tarps and move them every 10 days and let the tarps kill everything underneath.

PS- How expensive are the mylar bags?


So you seal them in mylar, and then put in a  bucket with oxygen absorbers?

or you put the oxygen absorbers inside the mylar bag?





Also, if you want to convert lawn to edible, CLover is a good way to go to start amending the soil . And clover will also attract lots of wildlife that you can hunt for meat especially rabbits and deer love clover. And it's a living fertilizer pulling nitrogen from the air into the soil

Ever try to kill an acre of grass with tarps? Enough glyphosate to kill an acre is 30 bucks and less than half a gallon. The tarps to do it would cost thousands and take up a small garage to store. I've done tarps, it takes more than 10 days.

I put the bag in the bucket, fill it up with grain/beans/etc, packing it down several times, then when I have several done, I seal them up except for the last few inches of one side. Then I drop the oxygen absorbers into each one and press out as much air as I can and finish sealing them.

Yeah, I mean especially since you plan to eat food out of the area- I wouldn't overdo the roundup.


But I think eating food where roundup was used years ago versus starving to death the answer is clear.



And how much/many toxins do the plants actually uptake into the food you might eat?



But good for you converting lawn into food production. Lawns are stupid AF and wasteful and harmful.


PS- I just realized this is the covid thread . You should make a thread about converting grass lawns into productive areas though- or just like an all around productivity farming thread! That would be cool



SO speaking of covid. I'm going to the banks later to see if the dang coin shortage is over. I'd like to get at least $100 in nickles today.


I might go into a store and try to stay away from people but if the parking lot is full I'm not going in.


One thing to consider doing for food during a crisi would be mushroom logs. They are SUPER productive and make lots of food over the years


THe startup cost is low, but the labor is pretty high. -And it's not a consistent source of food. But they can be dried and stored too. Or cooked and frozen

I think the concerns with roundup are overblown. I'm not growing anything roundup ready, so it's not like I'll be spraying it on the crops. It's a one-time knockdown to convert the area to crop production. After that it's all manual weed suppression strategy because if there's no food at the store, and no gasoline at the gas station, there won't be any roundup at the farm store, either.

One of my many variations of this winter's experiment does include a couple of unsprayed areas. The hope is to choke out perennial grasses with the winter rye, and then establish a dense patch of millet, and just keep cycling between cool season annual grass and warm season annual grass until the perennial grass is choked out.

I too am not too concerned with glyphosate.

Its a fuckload better than the paraquat they sprayed mexican weed with.

If there really is any danger, it's to the person spraying it. I always walk backward and spray in front of me, but still this last time a gust of wind hit just the wrong way and I felt a little bit of mist on my face. I washed my face as soon as I got back in the house and always change clothes and take a shower after.

It is wild how the times change.

My super duper hippy uncle is talking about hiring someone to go scorched earth with roundup on his property. He's got some kind of out of control ivy and bamboo he wants to get rid of.

I don't consider myself at all any way shape or form a hippy and I wouldn't spray that shit on anything I own.

Its great, just toss a bunch of flour, water and some yeast in the breadmachine

Even my kids like it

The only issue is getting those nice thin and straight slices like from the store. Havent figured that one out yet

Oh snap dude. Getting rid of Ivy and Bamboo is a nightmare.



The literally only way to do it I hear is to clear cut it and cover it with something and smother it.


Massive undertaking.


Bamboo is EXTREMELY invasive and will grow up highways and buildings and literally take over everything and destroy properties.

A really sharp chef's knife should fix that. A straight edge is fine for bread as long as its sharp enough.

I had that trouble with french bread fresh from the oven. My sharp Kai Shun totally fixed that, I could slice em 2mm thich if I took the effort.

I make my own mushroom bread( shiitakes)


In fact I'm about to make my 4th loaf in 2 weeks tonight. It's great.:mindblown:


But I also just make all types of bread all the time. 


If someone breaks in and steals all my saved food, I doubt they'll know what mushrooms logs are to steal those. Then I just have to force fruit them . I could always dig up some worms and have a nice fully rounded stir fry. :gollum:



Once you get the mushroom logs established they produce for years. Like 5 years sometimes!


In the future I might start a little small business with mushroom logs for production
