I’m not watching 20 minutes of a click baited YouTube clip on how Australia responds to a pandemic.

Just by how easily you buy into misinformation (as evidenced by all your other posts in this thread), I would bet things in Australia are not actually what you’re imagining them to be, or what the people who make money off your fear clicks are trying to convince you of.

I don’t see anything wrong with having guests to your country quarantine first during a pandemic, or forcefully quarantining those who break the law, which from what has been said in this thread seems to be the extent of what’s happening (unless you can show otherwise, which should be simple if it’s happening)... and something other countries have been doing for a year and a half now

I will gladly admit that I don’t know the current state of public health policy in a continent on the other side of the world from me. The fact that you can’t provide any evidence of anything exciting happening makes me believe I’m not missing out on much.

Not in this case, because I didn't actually agree with the one that caused koods' venom. Of course the man isn't going to torture people with a Q-Tip; it's absurd. Do you not see the satire in that?

I've seen amusing posts from people on all sides in this thread. You must not think very much of me if you think I'd be foolish enough to only think things were funny if they're things I agree with. Guesswork has brought me lots of laughs here and he and I are on opposite sides of the fence on this issue.

I just see a dumb low effort insult :shrug2:. If you don't agree with the sentiment behind it, it just comes off as another confused guy babbling about someone he doesn't like on the internet.

This is meant to be an informative thread, it's pretty ridiculous to accuse someone of "hiding behind the numbers" in a thread that's purpose is literally about sharing information and data. Somehow it's "silly" to point that out though?

If I say something is subjectively bad, and he throws me a graph and tells me that's why my opinion sucks, it's hiding behind numbers. Because the only relevant fact in this conversation is that what people are concerned about isn't something you can just decide for everyone else. Yelling "Science! SCIENCE!!!!!!" doesn't make you a solid decision maker, neither is the appropriateness of a decision solely rooted in numbers and graphs. That's why we have politics and science as completely different sectors.

What are some extremes to hiding behind numbers?

So I guess "hiding behind numbers" is a thing, like Biden was hiding his overt and public racism with the use of statistics. Politics are rife with "hiding behind numbers" and it's so poetic considering he flops when he's asked hard questions. How many times was he asked about camps and answered with "this is how this is, this is what is being effected here." Call whatever you need low quality, I can't be bothered. But it's disingenuous to act like koods doesn't have legitimate holes in his argument and the way he approaches his responses. Avoiding a yes/no is just a way to talk in circles, and presenting facts as if they don't come with biased interpretations and assuming his interpretation is the only viable one.. it's no wonder people find it annoying. Even science isn't always completely emperical.

But you are right about the thread, Asante is pretty clear the goal is to tell people what the truth is and not let people discuss the government elements that are just as relevant than percieved interpretations of data by people also not qualified to recieve it. Funny how it keeps going in a certain direction, it's almost as if everyone who thinks they are in some majority reserved on the moral high ground.. well they're actually in the minority, and on a quite level field. :mindexpanding:

Numbers and data give something objective to argue with/against, if there are holes in someone's argument then if anything the data should help to expose them.

In the instance I think you're talking about with koods, someone posted about Australia having covid concentration camps. He was unable to provide any evidence except for a youtube video, and then an article about the same one youtube video. Why is anyone obligated to answer a 'gotcha' question about a scenario when the person asking the question fails to respond to their request for more/better information? Most people like to know details on things like that before giving opinions.

We really just don't see people having genuine conversations here.

If someone says "I know the vaccine significantly decreases my chance of infection and time I'll be actively spreading it if I catch it, but the government still shouldn't mandate these things", that's something that starts from a place of reality and leaves room for a genuine conversation.

That's not what we get in this thread, we get people repeatedly posting lies and misinformation that have been debunked for months/years by the time they even first come across it. Instead of a conversation worth having it becomes trying to prove that the earth is indeed round, and it's a waste of time all around.

The 'certain direction' you're talking about is really just misinformed people coming in here to yell their misinfo, then eventually melting or burning out and giving up or getting banned. On a drug site you can expect a lot of the members to be more conspiracy minded, just like if you go to any discussion venue compromised of people trained to understand these things, anyone saying any of the shit antivaxxers frequently say in this thread would just be laughed at.

Perhaps, perhaps. Lots of things in this world are 'meant to be' things that they're very much not.

After all, this is The Pub, and just like in any Pub, one has to expect a certain amount of banter and debate. Telling people to 'fuck off' isn't generally considered acceptable (unless to a friend) in any Pub or Debate I've ever known, and is likely to get one a physical warning for it (at least in the Pub's where I grew up).

There is a COVID subforum now if people would like to post somewhere more dedicated to the topic. Not quite sure what the rules are over there, as it doesn't look like a very fun or happy place to me, as compared to this. I think I went in there once and was immediately shocked by how much people were at each others throats over the topic, so I vowed never to go back again.
