First melmak tp harvest, have questions * 1

Today I harvested my first melmak tp from two shoeboxes set up using Munch's shoebox method. The whole thing went something like spore swab->agar->agar->ropey myc->pin on agar->agar->two pint jars of oats->coir->two shoeboxes in a larger container. In this case the larger container was my sab, because it was handy and with melmak I wasn't concerned much about fae. The two arm holes in the sab were covered with squares of cloth taped at the top of the holes like mudflaps.

The whole thing didn't seem to take long because the myc I selected from my agar plates was pretty aggressive stuff and looked absolutely clean. Here are how the shoeboxes looked just before harvesting:

Not the greatest first flush ever, and not the largest melmak tp ever seen, but I'm happy with it. I'm now rehydrating the two shoeboxes to see if a second flush can be coaxed out of them. So far, so good. But I have a few questions, and hope some of you can help me with answers.

The fruits are pretty chunky but shorter than I thought they could get. Could this be because there wasn't enough water in the substrate to support more growth? The coir got pretty shrunk up towards the end.

Some of the caps have indentations on top. Is this normal or am I looking at some sort of contam? If so, are they still okay to eat?

While everything was growing, from spawn jars to coir to fruiting, the only smell coming from the myc was just that, nice, strong, wet, mushroomy smells. In the dehydrator now, though, the smell coming from the exhaust port is...blue cheese. WTF!!!? Nothing else I've ever dried smelled like anything but mushroom. This one has me worried. I don't want to throw these things out after all the work that went into them, but on the other hand I don't want to be too stubborn to throw them out, eat them, and wake up in the morgue. Has anyone had this happen before?

Thanks for your help! I won't be too happy if this batch is a complete loss, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Mushrooms are an enigma to the human mind, not even Idi Amin knew why they do what they do. As far as size it could’ve been a shortage of water, genetics, sub size etc. mushrooms are generally smaller on average when grown in shoe boxes in my experience.

There’s some kind of bacteria that starts with the a P. Like pseudo something or other that can cause spots and deformed caps. Those all look pretty good though I think. And once you dry mushrooms any bacteria dies off so 👍. Every time I dry mushrooms it smells like dirty feet cheese all up in muh crib so that’s pretty normal.

Thanks for that information, Roger. I’ve seen a couple of posts where someone said they cooked up cubes for a meal, but never said anything about a cheesy smell coming off of them. That would be interesting to know.

melmac has fishy genetics. and they do tend to use a bunch of water in fruiting. but the size isn't from water, just looks like genetics. I see a bunch of mutations in the one box, where the other looks more normal, but maybe not quite mature yet. make a good clone, and your yield and consistency should improve. I always let my mels grow a bunch longer than usualy since no spore drop, and I'm always surprised when they keep growing!

Munch, I like that term - “fishy genetics”. Since the plate that was used for spawn came from a pin on another plate I figured the two shoeboxes would be pretty similar. I was surprised, and thrilled, to be honest, to see one shoebox where the genetics looked like they were designed by a bunch of circus clowns. I mean, in one tiny shoebox there was one fruit that looked like a gnarly PE having an orgasm, while on the other end of the box was one growing upside down. Meanwhile the other shoebox looked relatively normal. I think I’m hooked on these melmaks.

Btw, big thanks for your shoebox tech, Munch!  Working great and very definitely eaf!
