Harvesting Question

Okay, I have a question about when to harvest. I was looking at some pictures on a forum : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=pictures&Number=695763&Forum=pictures&Words=as%20the%20veil%20breaks&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=2weeks&Main=695763&Search=true#Post695763 and I was wondering for Mazatapecs, if that is how big they are suspossed to be when you harvest them? Oh, and when I harvest, do I use some small tipped scissors or something similar? or should I just pull them off?

Harvest as the veil breaks, or if you want prints, wait til the caps opens and becomes 'flatter'.
Don't use scissors, just hold the base of the stem, twist and pull at the same time........ remember pulling you first teeth out?

I thought "stumps" could induce contamination. I've always made sure there was nothing left behind.

does anyone use latex gloves or antibacterial soap before harvesting?? Or is the mycellium far enough along that you don't have to worry about contaminating by picking?

I always use latex gloves. Then it's not an issue . I've never had a problem with leaving stumps. Better to leave the stump than taring your casing up trying to get it out. Also leaving the dead pins won't hurt anything either. the less you handle your casing the better off it will be. Don't go crazy trying to clean it all off you'll end up only hurting it not helping it.
