i trying something similar at the moment i made it 2 weeks ago and its got no contams yet. i still have to put in spore water though! my planned mycelium water fucked up. i microwaved for 20 mins and then wrapped it up in several thick blankets to make sure it was still very hot after 5 hours it was still too hot to handle. after 36 hours it was still too warm to innoculate. i reccomend using blankets

It wasn?t properly sterilised and it got some bacterial contamination (very sour, filthy smell) after a few days, so I dumped it.

blackout.. what the heck did you micro for 20 mins that took so long to cool? that's a long time man.
i understand that micro'ing for just a few mins is enough to kill anything.
but sure... we can leave it in long enough for the substrate to boil.
one thing is though... evaporation. the micro becomes wet with it.
which means.. moisture loss from the substrate.
gotta be compensated for.
also, depending on the size of your container, the microwaves will only affect
a select portion of the container. the outer corners of a square for example, might not get irradiated properly.
that's a problem for sure.
i'll try in a couple weeks.
don't see why a half pint jar can't be deconed in a micro.
best,
A

adept- i had a 10 litre rubbermaid with a pound of pre boiled rice and an equal amount (volume wise) of vercimulite. i sprayed the top of the substrate with a lot of water so it wouldnt dry out too much. it barely fit in the micro and i gave it a quarter turn every 5 mins so it would hit it more evenly. like u say it might not get irradiated properly so i wrapped it in a few blankets and a duvet to make sure it was heated through. i also put it in a large bag sprayed with dilute bleach on the inside so any air being sucked in would be sterile. i have done 1/2 pint jars in the micro too with success
