How reliable is sterilizing with a microwave oven? How long would one wish to run it to sterilize such things as substrate and casing. Any help is appreciated.

I've been gambling with microwave steralization: I just put things in there for 5 minutes, open the door for 1 minute and then repeat until I've nuked the fucker for 20 minutes or so. I don't like letting it go on continuously, because I'm affraid it could reach unpleasent temps.
But I don't see how contams could escape the destructive power of EMR radiation that strong! die die die

I'm trying a better technique, before going to the microwave let the jars freeze inside your refrigerators freezer for a day, them set your microwave to half power, put jars inside and defreeze for about 2 or 3 minutes, now increase power to 3/4 of full capacity for about 2 minutes, set it back to 1/2 or defrost if you see there's too much heat inside, repeat untill ice is melted or heat it a bit more.
BTW, here you have some pics of colonized honeywater for you too see. Water was sterilized using this method.
Cheers,

I just recently sterilized two Ziploc containers in the microwave, PF style. I then innoculated them, and now they show great signs of strong mycelium growth. I sterilized them in the microwave for 8 mins on high, sitting in a layer of water about 5 mm deep. I also boiled water in a teapot and poured it into a mug when it was steaming and set that into the microwave so that the containers wouldn't lose any moisture. The tops popped off during sterilization, but I pushed them back on, and taped up the holes before I took it from the microwave to avoid contams. Let it cool down(overnight), and then innoculate. Make sure you put holes in the top before putting in the microwave. Enjoy!

"I" did it this way:
1- Get a 250ml jar with plastic lid, punch a hole on lid and tape it.
2- Fill the jar with destiled water
3- Put 1/2 tea spoon with honey into the jar and mix it.
4- Microwave with it for 5 minutes, max power.
5- Take jar, put it inside freezer and let it freeze (it takes some time depending on freezer).
6- Take jar out of freezer and put it inside some container with water for 5 minutes to defreeze the glass.
7- Microwave it again (5 min) and then let it rest untill it's cold.
8- Grab spore syringe and inoculate with 1cc using the hole on lid.
9- Let jar rest on a heating pad at 75F or 80F.
Steps 5,6 and 7 are optional, i use this freezer technique when microwaving just to reduce contam. probabilities.
After 3 days you'll see mycelium growing inside the jar.
Good luck.
Cheers,
MAIA
