ya don't need to sterilize. If your using potting soil or some thing thats been sitting out in the rain with holes in the bag then do it but if you get like scotts or some thing in a resealable bag then i wouldn't sterilize..

I think you're not supposed to sterilize your casing layer. Pasturization would be ok to get rid of any bugs or already present bacteria or mold. If you sterilize you're creating a habitat for all sorts of nasty contams to thrive in.
