i once had a leaf to root and stay alive for like a month in an humidity dome, it never gave a new sprout, small cuts will generally root much slower, between 7-25 cm is probably best

It's crazy how fast they multiply. I'm letting several grow into bushes. I'm about to plant them in the ground before they get bigger. It's going to be a horroble glochid mess but I gotta cause to many things to graft in the coming years

These are my Pereskiopsis spathulata cuttings. I'm growing them to save a 'mini-greenhouse of shame' containing a few years old Trichocereus and Lophophora cacti. Due to circumstances I never got around repotting them. I'm hoping to save some by grafting them. Will it work out for older cacti? They're rather small and stretched so their weight or dimensions is not a problem. I have never grafted in my life before.

I cut off the tops and put them into soil.
This way, if i have 8 peres, i can graft on all 8 and soon do it again when the cut tops have rooted and grown to nice grafting size.
But if one wanted a whole lot, that way you do seem very good.
Does it take long for then to send out a new shoot and root?


I just lay it on top. No burying needed. It will throw out a root and send a new shoot to the top. The new offshoot doesnt have to be thick either.

You could do impale grafts with older seedlings. But the stock has to be sturdier. Id say it would work better with trichocereus

Thanks for the tip. Were you talking in general about a sturdier stock, or were you referring to my Pereskiopsis needing to strengthen up? I need to do some reading up about grafting.

Pereskiopsis seems to strengthen up with more light and less humidity. Like the one in the back is perfect for grafting. The one with the 2. But as soon as the graft takes, acclimation of the graft should ensue.

I think when i come back next days off from work my peres should be fully rooted with a couple of shoots for grafting.

I was thinking I should cut the Pereskiopsis below where the new shoots appear, and use the resulting stump to graft? Separate the severed shoots and let them root for another round of grafting?

What is the appeal of Pereskiopsis with regard to ethnobotanical gardening? Apparently one can graft a cactus with another which seems to be one of the reasons. But what is gained from that? I mean - do you graft a bridgesii f.x. with a Pereskiopsis?

You can get 6-12"+ of growth by grafting to a well established Pereskiopsis mother plant rather than the 1-3" of growth in the same amount of time by growing on original roots. It's purely a growth accelerator that sheds years off the time required to go from seed to mature cactus.

It also preserves mutations, variegated plants, and helps grow harder to grow specimens. Overall, it's a plant that everyone should have on hand, likewise some dragon fruit.

It's also a great house plant and sometimes people buy them locally at farmers markets. :smile: It's very easy money due to the shear ease of growth; it's a weed.
