Damn, that's a lot of jars... I would at least wait until a few are complete, and then birth those, and if you want, prematurely birth the rest, and case them. But my personal recommendation would be to wait until they're all done, and then birth some and case some. It sucks that you have to leave in 4 weeks, but do what you can, with that many jars, you will get a shitload.

Oh, also to speed up the colonization a tad, take off the tape, which I'm assuming is still on, and turn them upside down like in the pic. Just a tip...

you can birth them and then cut the uncolonized parts off with a clean knife as my frined has discovered, this doesnt really cause less shrooms to grow.

well i took the tape off a while ago and they've been upside down for a couple days now. prior to wednesday, i kept them in complete darkness with an constant temp. of 70 degrees. however, i'm not exactly sure how long these will take to fruit and given my 4 week time horizon, i'm thinking of simply giving them until this weekend and then go ahead and singe any uncolonized areas. i am noticing a fair amount of condensation in most of these jars. could that be the cause of retarded growth?

Pint jars usually slow down in the later stages. They look great though. Sorry to hear you only have 4 weeks. Maybe a little warmth will speed up colonization. Since you don't have much time I would use the colonized parts to make some great casings. Hope everything works out. ------------------ ..... LEGALIZE ..... See my pictures here.

well here's the thing, there aren't just 21 jars, there are 47. the 21 in the pic above have had the best growth rates, so i seperated them from the others. i suppose what i could do is birth the 21 this weekend and then save the others for casing once i get to school. then again, would it be better to case everything? when i started i didn't have casing in mind so i don't want this getting into a overly complex precedure. would casing be easier to manage than regular growth on cakes?[This message has been edited by struk (edited August 03, 2000).]

How long did that take you to prepare 47 pint jars? Congradulations on the ones in the pic. They look great. I think you will be pleased with the yield if you have time to fruit them. Man, when I do 24 1\2 pint jars, it takes me all night. Good luck.Grimace

took a full day to prepare and sterilize all 47 jars. mixing the substrate is relatively easy once you get the hang of it. the only lengthy aspect was during sterilization, when the jars had to boil for an hour and then be given an additional two hours to cool down. four burners, one pot per burner, and 6 jars per pot. let the jars cool overnight and inoculated them the next morning. took a fair mount of work overall, so i hope it was worth it. check out the 'take a look (pics)' post to see more of the setup.[This message has been edited by struk (edited August 03, 2000).]

Guacamole, you got a LOT of cubies to come, papa! I'd say case as many as you can right away, and take a few jars with you! Phew - then you gotta dry those babies when they're done growing. Have fun!

Try incresing your temp to about 85 deg this will be the ideal colonizing temp.. (or around there. And don't birth before its fully colonized.. andthing that is not colonized will probably get comtaminated. this is not what you want. Don't rush them. Wait until you have to go to school and case there if you want. Its probably a hell of a lot easier to travel with just the jars than tubs if you are going to case. One of the biggest lessons i have learned while groing is that you must be patient.... and fucking up such nice cakes would be a terrible thing.------------------ To see the light is not enough.. brainnoise

that's what i'm in the process of doing right now. this has been the coldest july in the u.s. northeast in about a hundred years and i haven't been able to keep these jars in anything above 75 degrees. i even tested our attic for temp/humid. and its reading relatively the same as the rest of the house. however, what i've decided to do is give these jars until next thursday (that'll make 4 weeks) to colonize. by then, they should be 95% if not 100% colonized. then they'll be birthed and allowed to fruit. the other 26 jars will keep colonizing and maybe i'll take them to college. i'm not going to case because its just going to be that much more time and effort and i don't have either right now. if you want to see more pictures of these guys, check out 'take a look (pics)' (http://www.shroomery.org/ubbnoncgi/Forum2/HTML/012458.html).

That would depend somewhat on the strain. If your environment is right, I would say you will have around 7 to 14 days until you see pin heads after birth. Lowering the temperature after birth will help the speed. What strain are those and where did you get them?Grimace

pf strain from pf. i can already see pin heads starting to form in some of the jars. most likely happen to the rest of them once they're near finished. should i be giving these jars any light or should i wait until they're completely colonized to do so?
