    #1381454 - 03/16/03 03:41 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

i was looking thru the Faq's for the answer, and i decided i would ask around and see what everyone else things. Innoculated Est 12-16-02, Todays Date 03-16-03
The question is: would you harvest yet?

Here's some pic's to demonstrate:

Right Side.

Exactly 3 months, Should these be harvested, or should they sit for another 2-3 weeks?

I, like Fee, know nothing about philosopher bags either. However, are the brown splotches substrate, or growth? If they are substrate, let it sit longer. If they are growths then you seem to have alot and I would be inclined to harvest (if they were mine. . . . *Envy*). But then again I know nothing of that form of fungal growth and am probably wrong.

Should just edit my first, but this doesn't really fall into that category. On the back view pic, in the upper right hand corner I see what appears to be 2 fruiting mushrooms. If these are mushrooms I have read that mushrooms only form after the sclerotia and mycelia are totally formed. If this is the case you may want to harvest. Once again, I know next to nothing and I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction.

i'm glad you didnt edit your post, i usualy dont double check post to see if they've been updated (althouh i hadn't read yours yet, had i, i would have missed it.)

Thier is a closeup of what was in the top right. it is semi-squishy. It is loose in the bag.

All the brown spots are growth that popout. maybe 1-3mm tall. They almost look like mushrooms that got pressed up agains the bag and had to stop growing.

Below is a pic of what the bag looked like at 2 months (1 month ago) from the bottom.

It looks fairly done to me. Actively growing sclerotia is white to yellow and mature sclerotia is brown. If you have a great deal of white sclerotia you should wait. The image of the 2 month old bag shows several white actively growing sclerotia. I looked at all of the 3 month old bag images and I don't see much in the way of actively growing lumps. You can harvest anytime. For future reference, flattening the bag to a one inch thick pancake after partial colonization improves yield.

after partial colinization eh? i thought it was befor innoculation... that's why i didnt do it.

I think this pic tells the story the best.

That's 20.4

another question... what can i do with the lump of substrate?
i broke it apart hoping i would find goodies inside, but that wasn't the case. it was suprisingly uncolonized on the center. only a thin layer of mycelium around the surface. I have more pictures, maybe later.

really, uncolonized center you say!? That sucks! Did you ever shake, mold the bag to distribute the mycelium? Is the uncolonized center overly moist? The whole block should have been colonized! And you should have gotten a lot more yield than you did!

I was going to recommend casing the mycelial block after picking through it, but if it was uncolonized, i fear it will most likely just contaminate.

You could flatten it right after innoculation, but if you wait until you can see growth the flattening helps spread the mycelium.

The flattening helps with the noncolonizing center problem. I don't have any suggestions for the use of the substrate lump other than plant it outside and don't get your hopes up.
