Aluminium foil as base for PF cakes harmfull??

I know that aluminium, causes oxidation when it comes in contact with food, for example vegetables.
It destroys some vitamins from what i know.

Does anyone have any idea if it could harm the shrooms?
They could be considered as a "food" also...

I know people use it as a stand for cakes....what i dont know is if oxidation is bad for the shrooms, which often come in contact with the metal...

What else do you people use? I ve used wire mesh, but it turned out to be a disaster , since shrooms made their way in it, and where hard to harvest. (the ones growing from the base of cakes)

I've never done cakes, I jumped straight into casings. :smile:  I have seen people use blank CDs though.  I think the only problem you'll have with aluminum is that it reflects light very well and makes for some spindly shroom action.

If that bothers you, and you don't have blank CDs handy, you can always just use the lid off of the jar they were grown in.

yeah it reflects light and if ur growing cubes they may grow downwards... but other than that dont trip... (no pun)

I make a tray out of alum., fill it with verm. Cakes never touch the alum.
Have not had any prob's

do you make the verm damp so that they use it as water supply?
Isnt that messy when harvesting?

For my first try at this im planning on taking a sheet of foil, folding/condensing it down to slightly wider in diameter then the cakes. Then put a thin layer of moist verm on it and then sit the cake on top. I dont want the foil spread out like in the above pic because I want as much perlite exposed as I can for humidity.
Once again, I have not tried this yet, but its what I have in mind.
