Pereskiopsis n00b

So I just received my first few pereskiopsis cuttings in the mail the other day and when I opened up the package I was surprised to see how downright "furry" they looked. I had read the Wikipedia page and was aware that glochids could be present, but these just looked pretty extreme. I wound up with a couple of fingers full of really brittle, barbed spines before I really sat down and started thinking about this plant.

I was curious, is there a lot of variation between species of the genus or even within species? The only species I've ever heard specifically mentioned by name is P. spathulata (and indeed mine were billed as P. spathulata). Do other people trim theirs or what? Why are their pereskiopsis so smooth looking while mine are so furry?

Sounds like your cacti was already dying do to your crappy care of it..... probably some kind of rot.

Those are P. spathulata. There are a few variations within each type and there is also other pereskiopsis.
Pereskiopsis aquosa
Pereskiopsis blakeana
Pereskiopsis diguetii
Pereskiopsis gatesii
Pereskiopsis kellermanii
Pereskiopsis porteri
Pereskiopsis rotundifolia
Pereskiopsis scandens

They all work for grafting. Your pereskiopsis will grow leaves after a week or so and depending on your watering and lighting they will be thick and short, or thin and long.

The one in the second picture you posted maybe Pereskiopsis porteri or
Pereskiopsis rotundifolia. I personally have only 2 different types I know the p.spathulata but the other I'm not sure. Has HUGE spines and leaves are thick and spine in the end. I think Pereskiopsis porteri but :shrug: Their new growth is the same.

P.diguetii? :shrug: It maybe P.Spathulata just a thicker variation but not sure.



If anyone has different variations please post them I am also interested in this. There are a few pictures online but not the best.

Just start wearing gloves when you handle them. Picking glochids out of your fingers gets old real fast.

I've got a wooly variety that I've been told is P. velutina, not sure what else might differentiate it from P. spathulata or even if that ID is accurate. Amount of wool and leaf shape both vary quite a bit by the growing conditions. The wool can get in the way while grafting sometimes but it's not usually a big deal.

You may be right, the only way to get a 100% ID would be flower color? P.Velutina is yellow and P.Spathulata is Red? Now I just need to get my pereskiopsis to flower.

That's new info to me about the difference in flower color, thanks for posting that. I wonder what factors aside from size might make flowering more likely.

I've recently started a little experiment to try to get mine to flower. I'm very far away but set up 3 different variations to 3 cuttings. 1 will be treated as a normal cactus watered only every 2 weeks or so and will go dormant. The other two are OVERLY FERTILIZED with high P weekly and watered everyday, however 1 is in a very small pot 2x2 so to root ball and cause stress similar to a regular plant in a small container to induce flowering

1 observation I have already noticed after 3 weeks is if you do not water frequently the leaves will widen and get longer. I'm assuming that its in an attempt to draw moisture/humidity from the air. They are all growing at the same rate and receive as close to equal sunlight.

I'm not sure but I would imagine that the wider and larger leaves caused from infrequently watering would be beneficial to grafts since they can perform more photosynthesis faster from the increased surface area and possibly absorber more water from air aiding in faster scion growth. But I'm getting ahead of myself and will need to perform another experiment to test this.

I become fascinated with this cactus because of the such rapid growth. There isn't much information or pictures depicting the different variations of pereskiopsis. After reading the description of pereskiopsis spathulata from the link below I feel no one owns a p.spathulata. So little information is published about it. We may all be using a different pereskiopsis and not spathulata at all.

Very interesting experiment man.What did you mean by you feel no one owns a real Pereskiopsis spathulata?When I click on that link,my PC freezes up.I also can't believe how fast they grow too man,as I have too keep cutting mine back,because they get as tall as me!I don;t graft with mine,and mine are just gr won for what they are.

Yea that page is resource heavy mine freezes up too. I'll capture the pages on pereskiopsis and post here.

From the description they have of the P.Spathulata it doesn't match mine maybe cause mine are still cuttings :shrug:

I have the same type of cutting, likely fromt he same vendor and its doing VERY well! i was in Hawaii for ten days, when i  came back it had two pups, 1, 4 inches long and the other 2 inches long!

These things seem to be growing despite me. I'm pretty sure I got them in the pots all wrong. I forgot to water them. Came and looked at them today: all three of them are sprouting a bunch of new leaves. :eek:

On a sadder note, I dropped my pot of E. Micromeris seedlings:sad:. I hope they reroot alright.

Pereskiopsis are such easy plants to work with other than the glochids. The initial cuttings I got disappointed me when I opened the package as well. I potted them up and within a month I had great looking little plants despite their initial appearance. Now I just keep cutting down the growth when it gets about 2.5-3ft tall and making new cuttings for graft stock. They thrive in my subtropical climate and are the easiest grafting stock I have used yet. Good luck with yours!!!
